Re: SPAM - SYS-Con relies on dead technology
for many it was good riddance, for many others (and, in some way, for us all) it was a sad loss... but the truth is that while printed periodicals lend some credibility to a given technology, their usefulness in this day and age is definitely questionable... and whether or not we need a magazine that's run by a publisher with no journalistic integrity, no sense of the community they serve, and no loyalty to anything but the almighty dollar is, in my opinion, a no brainer. Re: SPAM - SYS-Con relies on dead technology
I must say that I did subscribe to this mag when it first came out. I actually liked it. Hal Helms, Ben Forta, Simon, as well as other prominent CF developers were regular contributors, and I picked up a few things from it. When it came to PDF format, that was fine. I could print out only the pages that were not full page ads and have a slimmed down version that I kept in a library. Well when the mainstream CF'ers were no longer contributing and when the mag was full of far more ads than any useful content, I canceled my subscription as well as removed myself from their email list. They went downhill fast. So like Simon says, although I do miss the first couple of years, I don't feel sad about its demise. Re: SYS-Con relies on dead technology
Did you miss anything? Yes! Sys-Con is one of the biggest hypocritical spammers out there. Even if you forgive them for what they did with CFDJ, they are still a horrible, horrible company. Once you get on one of their mailing lists, there is NO way off of it. I started noticing that even though I unsubscribed to every one of their emails, I was still getting traffic. After some googling of this phenomenon, I found that there are hundreds of people out there in the same boat. They totally ignore your unsubscribe requests. What they have is one giant master mailing list, and everyone who has even given them an email address is in it. When they go to send out spam (promotions in their vocabulary), they often provide unsubscribe links, but those links only unsubscribe you from the *current* promotion. Your email address is never removed from the master list. They use that list to create hundreds of promotion lists and don't care whether you are on it or not. I wrote to at least 15 people at sys-con.com asking for help, but not a SINGLE person responded. Two of the 15 were dead addresses, but the rest all made it successfully to a person. Or, well, I should say that it appears to be a person. Another blogger wrote that the email addresses for staff are bogus. Anything with only a first name (i.e., john@, suzy@, etc) is bogus, while the staffers all hide behind full email addresses like john.doe@ and [EMAIL PROTECTED] So you're not likely to get a human anyhow. Phone calls to the company aren't returned. Threats and hate mail to the sales force aren't returned. Blogging about their deceptive and hypocritical techniques seems not to faze them. All in all, I think they could care less what the rest of the world thinks about them as long as they have 100,000 email addresses in their possession (how they get their circulation numbers). I have personally stopped every subscription I have to every sys-con media, and I will never do business with them again. I have also blocked their IP at the firewall level, and sent numerous complaints to CAUCE and other anti-spam organizations to try and get them on a blacklist. They are, IMHO, one of the worst spammers out there. And if you think I'm exaggerating at all, trust me, I'm not scratching the surface. They are SCUM. thanks, bruce ~| Create robust enterprise, web RIAs.
