Daylight Savings Time Change (Slightly OT, but relevant)

2007-03-09 Thread Robert Harrison

FYI:

In case you have not heard the dates on which we change to Daylight Savings
Time have changed. It used to be we went on Daylight Savings Time the first
Sunday in April and off the last Sunday in October. That has changed as
Daylight Savings Time has been extended to help conserve electricity. This
year we go on Daylight Savings Time this Sunday, March 11th at 2AM and go
off Daylight Savings Time the first Sunday in November.

This change was legislated by Congress and was unplanned, so it has not been
programmed into may computer systems and may affect computer, as follows:

1. If you are using Windows Vista and have automatic updates turned on
you should get an automatic download that will fix this problem. In this
case, do nothing.

2. If you are using Windows Vista and do not have automatic updates
turned on, you must either manually update your operating system with
Microsoft Vista updates or you must manually reset your time as instructed
below. To update your computer manually go to:
<http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/>  <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/>
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

3. If you are using Windows XP in your office and are connected to a
network, your system administrator may have loaded a Windows patch, in which
case you do nothing. Check with your system administrator to see how this
affects your corporate network and what your should do.

4. If you are using Windows XP at home (THIS APPLIES TO MOST PEOPLE)
you will need to manually adjust your computer time. See the instructions
below.

5. If you are using a MAC and are on OSX there is a patch you can
download at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24267 to fix this problem.
If you are on an older MAC you'll need to manually reset your time.

So remember, this Saturday night or Sunday morning (March 11, 2007), set
your clocks ahead one hour.

If you are on Windows XP and need to manually reset your computer (MOST OF
US), follow the instructions below.

1. Open your Control Panel (Start/Control Panel).

2. Double Click on Date and Time. This open the Date/Time dialog box.

3. Select the Time Zone tab and make sure the box that says
"Automatically Adjust Clock for Daylight Savings Time" is NOT CHECKED. If it
is checked, UNCHECK it by clicking on the box (if you leave it checked it
will adjust your time again later, on the wrong day and mess up you time
setting).

4. Now select the Date & Time tab. In the time box, set your clock
ahead one hour.

5.  Press the Apply button.

That is all. Hope this was helpful.

RE: Adobe Nails ColdFusion Cofin

> Its sad to see any developer give up on CF but it sounds that by you
saying...

I just want to get Adobe to drop the price. It's a hard sell to some clients
and we've lost some opportunities because of it. I'll always continue to use
CF as my mainstay, but also learning .net is not a bad thing... And whenever
we have lost a site it's always been to .net technology.

For what it's worth I've always been, and still am a CF advocate. But the
reality is it's a business market and it's doesn't hurt to have alternative
options to give your clients.

Worked out OK for me. Don't know if it will work out for Adobe when we start

RE: CFMX 7 / Vista

2007-08-08 Thread Robert Harrison
That's timely and great information... thanks.

I just bought a Vista machine and have been updating it. So, two related
questions:

1. Does CF8 install cleanly on Vista or will these same instructions
work for CF8?

2. Also, Vista does not support SQL Server2000 so I had to upgrade
to 2005 (big pain).
   Does anyone have any experience connecting SQL Server2005 DBs to
CF on Vista?
   That's where I was expecting issues...

Eclipse/CFEclispe

2007-08-08 Thread Robert Harrison
So as advised by many on this list I'm going to try CFEclipse, but I found
the whole thing a bit confusing. It looks like there are two steps. First
install an Eclipse IDE / SDK, then install CFEclipse as a plug-in. I thinks
that it. So, first which version of Eclipse should I install? There are
several on page http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

After that I install the CFEclipse plug-in. Is this correct?

RE: Eclipse/CFEclispe

2007-08-08 Thread Robert Harrison
Thank You. I'll give it a try... downloading now!

I'm figuring since I have a new kick-butt machine and I still have my old
machine and environment, I'm going bleeding edge on the new one.

IIS7, CF8, SQL Server 2005, CFECLISPE, etc. Why not for once be on the lead?
Normally I wouldn't try that so boldly but my development platform is still
intact on the old machine and production won't be in jeopardy. Keep your
fingers crossed. So far I've gotten through the glitches as they've shown
themselves.

RE: Eclipse/CFEclispe... Update

2007-08-09 Thread Robert Harrison
Update...

Well, I installed CF8 on Vista. It took a long time for web services to
connect, but then the install completed successfully. Then when I brought up
the CF Administrator I got an internal IIS server error. Something about a
missing file. It ran fine before I installed CF8, so now there's that.

On Eclipse, Tom Chiverton recommended:
http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/drops/R2.0/R-2.0-200706260303
/. I downloaded the WIN 32 version zip file, but it won't unzip properly. I
keep getting a message the file names are too long for the OS. Tried it on
both XP and Vista and got the same error. The file names are huge. Moved it
to the root but still got the error. So there's another issue to content
with.

Now, fix, fix, fix... hopefully.

That was my first issue. I went to WINZIP and unzipped them. That seemed to
work. But maybe I'll try it again.

It's getting really frustrating. I may try another download and try to
install again later. I want Eclipse and CFEclipse.

Take a look at your "selected" option in the CFSELECT. See CFDOC clip below:

One or more option values to preselect in the selection

use a comma-delimited list. This attribute applies only if

RE: best way to store search terms entered on a website?

2007-08-23 Thread Robert Harrison
Create two data tables, one for terms (have an term_ID and search_term
field) and one for search date/time (have a term_ID and date/time field).

In the terms table check to see if the term is there. If it is get the
term_ID and update the time table with the term_ID and date. If it is new,
add the term, return the ID, then update add the date/time and term_id to
the date table.

Now you have two tables: one with unique terms; another with date/time of
each search... linked using the term_id as a key. I think this is the most
flexible way you can do it. Do it this way and you should be able to write
queries and reports to analyze that data pretty much every way possible.

Is this explanation understandable?

Link Generator Tool

2007-08-24 Thread Robert Harrison
I'm building a link generator tool that creates links to data driven
glossaries. The theory is the user can cut and paste the link into either
static text on the site, or into text areas on forms to update the data
base. I can handle the quotes, but the #'s are giving me a fit.

I can output a link like:

http://mysite.com/glossary.cfm?glossary=3&term=156',
'glossary', '410', '300', '110', '35')">

This works fine when it's going into HTML text, but when it's going into a
cf form, the # throws off Cold Fusion. If I use a breaking ##, that work for
cf handling, but isn't right for HTML text.

So I thought I'd try,

http://mysite.com/glossary.cfm?glossary=3&term=156', 'glossary',
'410', '300', '110', '35)">

That works for cut and paste in both CF and HTML text, but it moves the
current page to [Object].

Is there something I can add to the last statement to make the href execute
the openPopUp but leave the current page alone; or is there another option?

Thanks

RE: Link Generator Tool

2007-08-24 Thread Robert Harrison
> if you simply use two hashes instead of one within your CFOUTPUT

It's a little more complicated. It can be pasted into a form, which updates
a data base that is queried for later output, or it can be pasted straight
into HTML static copy. It needs to work for both.

I think I've solved it by putting in four . That seems to do it and
doesn't seem to mess up the HTML, but I still have to text in XHTML.

RE: Link Generator Tool

Here's another option. If I just use

This Term

That functions almost right. It doesn't move the base page, still does the
action, creates a link, eliminates the # issue, etc.

What it doesn't do is give me the cursor arrow on mouseover. I'm going to
look for a way to force a cursor change on mouseover. That may just do it.

How would I replace the carriage returns in a textarea entry with ?

This will do carriage returns and quotes to you can pass the data around in
forms. Keep in mind, however, if you stick into a DB and pull it back
to a form for edits later, you need to convert the back to carriage
returns. The string below will do that:

#REREPLACE("#myoutputstring#","","#chr(13)#","all")#

Hope that helps.

One thought...
each college is generally in a given state. Have the select a state first,
then present a list of all colleges in that state. Use a page of links
instead of a drop down list, that way a long list won't seem so dauntingly
long.

Custom Script with CFFORM

2007-08-30 Thread Robert Harrison
I'm using a custom script with CFFORM. When I include an onsubmit action in
CFFORM, it add this statement to the CFCODE.

}else {

// run userdefined onSubmit javascript.

LimitAttach(this.form, this.form.file.value)

return true;

}

That's cool, so it run my script after is runs the CFVALIDATION. My script
is:

extArray = new Array('gif','swf');

function LimitAttach(form, file) {

allowSubmit = false;

if (!file) return;

while (file.indexOf("\\") != -1)

file = file.slice(file.indexOf("\\") + 1);

ext = file.slice(file.indexOf(".")).toLowerCase();

for (var i = 0; i < extArray.length; i++) {

if (extArray[i] == ext) { allowSubmit = true; break; }

}

if (allowSubmit) form.submit();

else

alert("Please only upload files that end in types: "

+ (extArray.join("  ")) + "\nPlease select the "

+ "correct file type.");

}

This checks for valid file types for an upload file. It works, but now after
it gives me the alert on wrong file types, it submits after clicking OK on
the alert. How do I get this to abort the submit after an alert?

Thanks

RE: Help with Simple SQL Insert

2007-08-30 Thread Robert Harrison
The problem almost certainly lies in the field definitions in the data base
tables. I suspect the "double" values, but I think you should take a look at
the int values as well. They look huge. I can't speak to mySQL exactly as I
use other DBs, but most DBs compact integer data into binary, so field sizes
are not number of characters. For example, in SQL Server (smallint 4) can
store any number from from -2^15 through 2^15 - 1 (2 to the power of...
binary).

Here's a link that may help with MYSQL data types:

CF Flash Properties Retrieval

I found the answer on a blog by Doug Hughes. This a great cfc he's written

needed. If you're on the list Doug, nice... very nice. The post was at:

You'll need two pages or steps to get this value - one for the form
itself, then when you submit that form you can have the value.

document.forms[0].wide.value = document.images[0].height;
document.forms[0].submit();

But that is for passing CF values into Javascript, isn't it? Robert is
trying to get a client-side JS value (which is defined once an image has
loaded) into the server-side CF code. Can't be done in that way.

Robert, what is it you're trying to do in general, aside from the

Clear Object Variables

I'm using the code below to get image height and width. It works the first
time I use it to get the image size for a particular file, but after I've
used it on an image the sizes are cached somewhere. If I change the image
size the old sizes from the first read still show. How do I clear these?

img =
tk.getDefaultToolkit().getImage("#rootpath#\assets\banners\#gif_files.name#"
);

width = img.getWidth();

height = img.getHeight();

img.flush();

How can I clear just these variables or set some sort of timeout?

Yes. That did not clear the cached data. I tried to init the entire
structure but I don't really know the actual name of the img object CF is
creating. I'm naming it "img", but CF is probably appending some longer name
that has img as part of it.

Wherever these are being cached they not in any of the CF variables I can
find... although strangely enough they are clearing at the purge interval
set in the CF administrator.

RE: How create results with an Outer Join using 2 different databases

2007-09-05 Thread Robert Harrison
You probably cannot do an outer join with two different data sources (I'm
not sure,,, but seems iffy)

You may be able to do a subquery with two data sources. A subquery could
work an outer join.

If that doesn't work you may be able to query on DB, the loop through the
records and run the second query on loop to pick up the extra data.

RE: remove a number from a series of numbers

2007-09-12 Thread Robert Harrison
> Is it possible to remove a digit from a multi-digit number IE:
> 2007 would become 207?

You could read the length to get the length to get the number of digits,
Then make a decision as to which digit to remove,
Then based on that and the number of total digits decide how
many digits to read from the beginning of the string,
then use the RIGHT and LEFT string read function to get the
starting and ending digits, then concatenate the beginning and
end reads into a single string.

If you need help with that I can put together a small program, but you
should be able to do with just a few
Cfsets and RIGHT and LEFT.

XHTML Style CF?

2007-09-12 Thread Robert Harrison
I've noticed some other programmers are now using a close tag indicator in
stand-alone cftags, like .

As far as I know it's only an XHTML requirement to close all tags (e.g., ) and not a CF issue. Since CF never outputs CFtags to the browser is
this actually necessary?

RE: How to write files to a local hard disk?

2007-09-14 Thread Robert Harrison

That is almost certainly not possible because browsers are designed to stop
this kind of thing. That's for malware and viruses. Your best option would
be to write the file to a temp directory on your server, then make the
resulting file available as a downloadable file.

Darn syntax

2007-09-20 Thread Robert Harrison
I've got the table driven system with all these profile reads. The profiles
don't change often so I want to cache unless I'm testing. If I'm live I want
my cache time at several days.

So I set:

OR

Now on my profile query statement, instead of saying

cachedwithin="#CreateTimeSpan(2, 0, 0, 0)#"

I want to say

cachedwithin="#CreateTimeSpan(#cache_time#)#"

But it don't like that. I've tried various combos using and not using
EVALUATE, etc. but it just doesn't want to obey me.

Anyone see the correct syntax. I'm sure this is nothing more than a syntax
problem but I'm not seeing it right now.

I've done this with bloggers and it worked great. I used to let anyone blog
on my site and create their own area, styles, etc.

Just create some sub folder to group the user folders in.
www.somesite.com/users/theirUserName. The you can populate the folder with
some generic index.cfm page to make it work. I used a write an index page
that had a few hard parameters unique to the user (i.e., userID and StyleID,
etc.), then CFincluded a generic template that did the queries and styling,
output, etc. using the unique user parameters as they main key.

This seemed to work out very well. I took this down later, but it had
nothing to do with the program. That worked great. The bad idea was letting
anyone say and post anything on my site. Too many idiots out there. But
that's another story.

RE: Security Questions

2007-09-24 Thread Robert Harrison
>From WikiPedia

Some designs are more sophisticated and consist of three different kinds of
nodes: clients, application servers which process data for the clients, and
database servers which store data for the application servers. This
configuration is called a three-tier architecture, and is the most commonly
used type of client-server architecture. Designs that contain more than two
tiers are referred to as multi-tiered or n-tiered.

This implies nothing more that separating the CFserver from the DB server.

I think we can all agree to that, but if you're doing building CMS systems

Don't think of it like forms. Think of it as "User Interface Data Entry

HELP: Speeding up a Collection

2006-11-07 Thread Robert Harrison
Below is an excert from a page that uploads an Excel spreadsheet parses it
into a collection and outputs the data from the spreadsheet (actually it
updates a data base, but output is OK for testing).

Anyway, it works OK for twenty or thirty records, but it takes forever to
process when it gets more records and times out when it gets to a couple of
hundred. AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG? ANY IDEAS?

Thanks,

OLD: Speeding up a Collection / NOW: Running in Background

2006-11-08 Thread Robert Harrison

Yesterday I asked about a problem where I'm uploading an Excel spreadsheet
and building a collection from it using a COM object to update a data base
from the spreadsheet. The collection is taking too long to build so the page
sits there forever then times out... but the program actually does work.

Here's a change of thought:

1. Is there something I can do to make the collect/update portion run
in the background rather than in the actual page? (Note: It's difficult to
pass to a new page because there are form variables from a previous select
page which are unknown).
2.  What can I do to prevent a timeout? I used http://www.fusionauthority.com/quarterly

That part I knew. Question is, what can I do to make something happen on the
user side?

Either: display "PROCESSING, PLEASE WAIT" on the HTML page display until the
job finishes;
or display "Job Submitted", letting the user exit from the page and have the
job finish in the background.

Thanks

cfhttp QUESTION

Now I'm canning the EXCEL COM object and using CFHTTP to parse a comma
delimited format. This works fine when the data is perfect. But when this
data is missing a column from a row and doen't have the right number of
columns it says wrong number of rows and craps out.

Here's a perfect data set... this works:

Email Address,First Name,Last Name,Company,Title,Address Line 1,Address Line
2,City,State,Zip,Phone,Fax,Website
[EMAIL PROTECTED],Avi,Hayon,,

RE: cfhttp QUESTION (ISSUE SOLVED)

2006-11-09 Thread Robert Harrison
Thanks for the input everyone. I solved the problem by adjusting the Excel
template. I added an automunber column as the last column in the template
and hid it. That ensured every record had the same number of elements now
matter what the user entered.

This now allows users to users to download an Excel template, populate that
template with data, then upload the complete spreadsheet to mass populate a
data base.

The program parses the spreadsheet, validates the data, updates a data base
and all relational records, etc. This allows users to add/update records in
mass.

It is working now. It was a pain to work with but it's a nice feature for
the users.

Thanks for the help.

RE: cfform - bad hosting company

2006-12-05 Thread Robert Harrison
If you're using CFFORM you are probably looking for the validation routines
that come with the form. They are java script and need the parameter
ScriptSRC pointing to the directory where the cfform scripts are kept.

Example:

Contact the hosting company and ask where they are keeping cfform.js and
masks.js and point there in scriptsrc or find them in your CFLIB and put
them in a location on your own site.

That should do it...

RE: Checkbox validation

2007-10-12 Thread Robert Harrison
It's because check boxes need separate names. It's the HTML form, not CF. If
you want multi-select use a multi-select combo box (which will give you a
delimited string) ...

OR

if you need checkboxes give them different names. If the check boxes are
output from a query and you don't know the number, then add a count number
to the name to make then unique. Then, when you process, loop on them and
use EVALUATE to extract the values.

If you don't understand this contact me off list and I'll send you a routine
that will do it... but it's two sides - the build side and the process side.

Yes it will persist until you check it again.

First expire the cookie. Then process a command that checks the cookie and
if it doesn't exists, kill your session variables and kick them out.

You will need to add the routine (or include) to the top of every secure

Absolutely. Use a session variable. Clear the variable on log-out and, if
appropriate, expire the cookie.

The trick is to check for the session variable on every secure page. If
not... away you go evil hacker.

RE: Automatically sync an access db to SQL 2005

2007-10-16 Thread Robert Harrison
> Does anyone know of a methodology to automatically move Access data to SQL
Server 2005?

After you've created a data base shell, right click on the DB source in SQL
server 2005. You should be able to import data and table structures from
access with little problem.

> The Client is syncing their AS400 to Access.

But above AS400 to Access... that I don't get. They run a good chance of
losing data going to Access. On an AS/400 they should be able to run SQL
server and could go straight to that. Much less chance of complications.

Subject: Replace Syntax

Hey list,

I'm trying to replace double quotes for single quotes in a string using this
syntax:

#Replace('form.description','"',"'","ALL")#">

However, it's giving back form.description in the output and not the actual
text from the textfield named "description".

What am I doing wrong?

Populating PDF Form Fields using CF

2007-11-13 Thread Robert Harrison
I have some downloadable high res PDFs. These are print ads for schools.
They have a couple of form fields where the school puts in their name,
address, and phone number. The problem is many schools don't have the Adobe
writer so they can't update the fields.

Is there a function in CF where I can populate PDF form fields from
variables?

I looked at CFDocument and its components but they seem to fit the bill. If
there's a way to do it using XML I might be able to make that work since I
could write out the XML file using CF.

Any ideas?

Thanks

RE: **SPAM** url variables not picked up in url with # anchor

If it's a CF variable use ## in the anchor statement so CF knows is a
literal # and not start of a variable.

Can anyone help with this. This may be common knowledge but I've never come
up against it before.

http://www.site.com/page.cfm#test?foo=1

CF doesn't see the url variable on the end of the url. The CGI.ScriptName
doesn't include it, in fact I can't see it included in any CGI variable. Is
there a way of grabbing the url variable in these cases (where there is a #
in the url), or will it simply not work?

Oh, this is on IIS6 + CF 7.0.2

Thanks

Will

EOL Delimited file

2007-11-19 Thread Robert Harrison
I'm writing a quick option to dump data to a delimited file from a query. No
problem formatting the query data.

Question is, what do I put at the EOL to denote a new record? (CHR10, CHR13,
LF, CR)???

Thanks

Subject: Dynamic ID's

Hello list,

I've done dynamic ID's before in .net and xml. I can't seem to figure out
how to do it in CF. Here's what I want to do:

- Query the database with the ID's.

- Sort the ID's in proper numerical order

- Grab the last ID (largest number which will be the last row of
the query)

- Then, add 1 to the number

If someone has a better idea for a unique ID, I'm open to suggestions.

Happy Holidays!

Rick Sanders

Array Read / Output Help

2008-01-08 Thread Robert Harrison
I'm creating an array. It's a list of record numbers to be looked up later.
This is the code.

After the array is built it will be a list of key and id numbers, like below
(only much longer):

Key  Value
1   17
2   24
3   37
4   8
5   32

I need to be able to do two things:

1. Look in the array to see if a value exists and, if so, return the
key.

2. Loop through the array, output the key and use the value in a
query.

I've tried 300 things. None worked. Any ideas?

2008-01-08 Thread Robert Harrison

There are about 60 fields in each record that may have disclaimers. The same
disclaimer could be used on many fields and in many records. What I'm trying
to do is number them, then put the reference number by the disclaimed fields
and output the disclaimers at the bottom of each page with the reference
number.

Actually, the moment the cow is 'on earth" it's speed will be zero.
