RE: [Chat] BGE outage

2005-06-17 Thread Emily Chalmers
John--

I don't mean to be testy, but we are NOT a developing country. The
comparison doesn't work. And what precisely do you propose my disabled
neighbor do when the temperature in the upstairs of his rowhouse where he
is currently confined rises above 90 degrees and he can't even plug in a
fan? Go sit on the curb?

We had a power outage in this grid about 3 months ago. At this point, I am
interested to see a breakdown of BGE outages by grid and to find out when
and how BGE determined where points requiring major servicing would be
situated.

I personally am NOT grateful for BGE. BGE and Verizon are the two best
excuses for deregulation I have ever seen, and generally I am opposed to
deregulation. I have managed to end all contact with Verizon, but thus far
I have been unable to generate my own electricity.

I think we should all be thankful for what we have. And at least we have
notice. Like Steve said, the outage is probably to accommodate the new
sewer
line that is to run across 27th Street or some other capital project.

While I was traveling in Costa Rica in 1993 the town of Cahuita had a 5
hour
power outage one evening. The town had been wired for electricity just
10-15
years earlier. While the kids were upset at the lack of music and cable
television, the elders sat on their porches reminiscing about the good
old
 days.

 What do other people think?

RE: [Chat] BGE outage

This is certainly a big inconvenience, but 30 hours is basically just a day. Most people should be able to handle a day without electricity (barring the rare medical condition that requires electrical equipment, but BGE has solutions, such as back-up generators, for those needs).
Emily, do you really need to go stay in a motel? Our homes in CV are built for thorough cross ventilation, hence the transoms and multiple windows on either end of the house. The front porches are designed for breezes to cross through them. Air conditioning was non-existent when the houses were built, and people seemed to survive okaythen.
It would definitely be a hassle to not have my daily conveniences such as air conditioning, fans, and electric stove for 30 hours, but I think I'd manage through it.

Christine, I personally am enraged. The outage affects several streets--including St. Paul--south of 28th. I'm not sure if affects some areas of Harwood, as well. I wonder if anyone at BGE realizes how hot these rowhouses get. Here are some of the people who would be affected:

Next door to me are an elderly disabled couple. The man can barely get down the stairs, and the wife has a heart condition.

Across the street is a woman with 4 small children. Down the street is a group home that relies on an elevator to get residents in and out of the dwelling.

The inconvenience to me is nothing compared to the danger a 30-hour outage poses to these folks. I have enough money to take my cats and go stay in a pet-friendly motel. However, I feel like suing BGE, but you can't sure people just for being jerks.

If you are affected by the outage, please call both BGE and the Public Service Commission, which is responsible for overseeing public utilities. I talked with them about the last outage, which thankfully was cancelled because of rain and rescheduled for a later date. But it was only a few hours, and the weather was not hot then.

NB, in my increasingly long life I have lived in many places around the world. Nowhere other than Baltimore have a ever heard of a "planned power outage," and never have I been asked to go for 30 hours without power except during an emergency when power was interrupted. What do other people think?

I assume everyone else got a notice from BGE about the 30-hour outage this weekend.

Yes, that was 30 hours that we will not have power, from 1:00 a.m. Saturday on.

Does this not seem like an unusually long time to go without power?

That means no air-conditioning, laundry, refrigeration, computers, television, etc. etc.

I?m curious as to whether anyone else is ruffled by this outage.

Mr. Mayor,

BGE is planning a 30-hour outage for June
26 in the area along 27th
  Street.

Can you please do something to force
this company to break this 30 hours up into several smaller outages?

This outage means no laundry, air-conditioning,
computers, television, answering machines, cooking on an electric range, street
lights, no nothing for 30 hours!!

This is irresponsible for this monopoly
to do this.

We have many elderly, ill, low-income people
in this area.

Please serve us by contacting BGE!

Please.

Christine Gray in Charles
 Village

John, I know
we should be thankful etc. but really!

But 30 hours is too much at one time.

Im going to contact the mayor and
BGE.

RE: [Chat] BGE outage--6, not 30 hours

2005-06-17 Thread Emily Chalmers

BGE states that the planned outage is 6 hours, not 30, and that new letters are being prepared telling affected customers that.

I was unable to learn whether BGE has a temperature ceiling that would automatically cancel the outage, but I plan to call the PUC and ask if there is one.

Sarah, for the record, although I told BGE about the couple next door, the rep did not inform me of any alternative plans for people like them. The letter I received also offered no information about any alternatives. I therefore deduce that BGE doesn't have any.

And yes, in this case I would go to a motel if the temperatures were high. I don't know where you live, but I have no cross-breezes, and the upstairs rooms are quite simply stifling. I have an elderly cat and another that gets ill in heat waves, and I am not young. Rather than make us all ill, I would move out andam grateful that I have that alternative.

I am alsofed up with these "planned outages," which have become a regular event. For what I pay BGE, I expect decent service.

2005-06-17 Thread arjay
Chazville,

About 7 or 8 years ago all the power in CV went off for hours and hours during
daylight. It was a rather amazing experience and so wonderfully quiet. I had
never experienced it that quiet in CV before. Regardless of the hours of the
day there is always a background hum of blowers and motors and machinery etc.
Even late at night before dozing off to sleep one can imagine being in a
submarine and hearing the sound of the motors and mechanicals. I had no idea
of the extent to whick we are bombarded by sound that we have simply adjusted
to.

I liked the quiet adventure of all the audio annoyances of civilization
disappearing that day. We should arrange to do it on purpose more often as
far as I am concerned.

I'm up for some electrical down time!

BGE made a mistake in its original letter and says it is sending new ones.

Everyone who is affected will receive a letter. If you don't receive one, you're OK. My grid seems to end at 28th and to run from at least St. Paul over into Harwood.

I wouldn't mind living withoutBGE in a hospitable climate where I was set up to do so. I too get tired of the constant noise pollution. I have a neighbor who power washes her house every weekend and sometimes on week nights.

Christine,

I did not get any notice either; I'm on the east (odd) side of the 3000
block of Guilford. My guess is that the planned outage is is just for
a few blocks of Charles Village. I know that my side of Guilford
sometimes is hit by unplanned outages that do not affect the other side
of the street.

Now that I see your newer posting that you are on the 2700 block of
Calvert, I suspect that it has to do with the sewer line that the City
is going to run across 27th Street. BGE probably has to reroute the
electric line where it crosses 27th, if it crosses under the street.

Steve.
