[ChurchillChat] Re: Why did Churchill not like detective novels ?

2018-03-09 Thread Joe Oliver
Afraid I can't cast any light on where the claim that Churchill disliked
detective novels is from, but in addition to Berlin Hotel, Colville's
Diaries mention that Churchill read Josephine Tey's 1951 detective novel
'Daughter of Time' (Footnote to 19th April 1952) - though that was largely
because of the Richard III theme.

He was also of course personal friends with Arthur Conan Doyle and read his
Sherlock Holmes stories, so although they may not have been his first
choice of reading I'd be surprised if he had a great aversion to detective
novels.

Though Roosevelt was the real detective fiction buff, being an honorary
member of the Baker Street Irregulars Sherlock Holmes Society, and saying
he'd like to write detective novels himself.

Re: [ChurchillChat] Re: effigies of Churchill at Madame Tus Saud's

2016-10-22 Thread Joe Oliver
If it's any help as an incidental detail I remember reading Churchill sat
for Madame Tussaud workers to model the last waxwork of him in his lifetime
in 1956. (So that's a span of 48 years between the first and the last)

Afraid I don't have the source to hand but will post if I come across it
and it has any more information.

I'd be interested to hear what you discover if Madame Tussaud's come back
with anything helpful.

Thanks,

Joe
