Subject: Bush, Rockefeller and Citibank!!
When asking yourself why George W. Bush was involved with the
brokering of a bank merger between Citibank and (part of)Wachovia,
even though the U.S. Government knew that Wells Fargo was preparing
what would very likely be a superior deal(limiting taxpayer risk,
increasing Wachovia shareholder value and providing a home for all
Wachovia lines-of-business and employees).
Perhaps it has something to do with close relationship between the
Bush and Rockefeller families, and preserving their families' fortunes
in Citibank stock!!
Percy Avery Rockefeller (1878–1934) was the son of William Rockefeller
and his wife, Almira Geraldine Goodsell. He attendedYale University
from 1897 to 1900, where he was also a member of the 1900 class of
Skull & Bones.
Rockefeller was founder and Vice President of Owenoke Corporation; a
board director of Air Reduction Company, American International
Corporation, Atlantic Fruit Company, Anaconda Copper Mining Company,
Bethlehem Steel Corporation, BowmanBiltmore Hotels Company, Cuba
Company, Chile Copper Company, Consolidated Gas Company, Greenwich
Trust Company, W. A. Harriman & Co. & Brown Brothers Harriman &
Company, Mesabi Iron Company, National City Bank of New York, National
City Company, New York Edison Company, North American Reassurance
Company, National Surety Company, Provident Loan Society, Remington
Arms Company, United Electric Light & Power Company, Western Union &
Telegraph Company; and a trustee of John Sterling, Yale-1863.
He married Isabel Goodrich Stillman, daughter of First National City
Bank president James Stillman (now known as Citibank), onApril 23,
1901. Their daughter Isabel Stillman (Rockefeller) Lincoln was a
bride's maid at the wedding of Dorothy Walker andPrescott Sheldon Bush.
Isabel Rockefeller Lincoln was born in Ardsley-on-the-Hudson, New York
on 23 June 1902. Her father, Percy Avery Rockefeller, was one of the
richest financiers and industrialists of his time. Percy was the son
of William Rockefeller, who made a fortune from the Standard Oil Co.
Isabel's maternal grandfather, James Jewett Stillman, was an immensely
wealthy banker and President of theNational City Bank.
She attended Westover School. Isabel was a member of Junior League, of
which she took an active part. She became a member of the advisory
board and helped produce a play called Ready Made. She also performed
singing and dancing numbers. She studied bacteriology at Columbia
University for three years, and then went to Europe for 5 months with
her mother. She was a frequent face in New York high society since her
introduction in 1920.
In January 1925, a false rumor was spread that she was to marry
Alexander Thayer, son of Russell Thayer of Philadelphia. In June 1925,
it was announced that she would marry Frederic Walker Lincoln, Jr. Her
cousin William Avery Rockefeller II was married to a sister of
Frederick Lincoln, Jr. The day before Isabel's marriage to Mr.
Lincoln, a large party was held in their honour by William Avery
Rockefeller II. The wedding was held on 26 September 1925 at Christ
Episcopal Church in Greenwich, Connecticut by Rev. John Lewis. The day
after the wedding, the newlyweds were again honoured at a large
function at the Field Club of Greenwich. A week-long honeymoon in
Buenos Aires followed in November.
As with many of her relatives, she all but disappeared from social
life after her marriage. She died on 23 March 1980.
Frederic Walker Lincoln, Jr. (15 October 1898, New York City - 7 April
1968, Greenwich, Connecticut) was born the son ofFrederic Walker
Lincoln, Sr. and was married into the Rockefeller family. He was
educated at Pomfret School, and graduated fromPrinceton University in
1921. Prior to graduation he served as a sergeant in the aviation
section of the Army Signal Corps. Upon graduation, Lincoln joined the
export-import firm H.W. Peabody & Co. He fought in World War II in the
Naval Air Reserve, retiring with the rank of commander.
Lincoln was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New York Medical
College and the Fowler and Fifth Avenue Hospital, until 1965. In the
same year he was awarded an honorary degree from the New York Medical
College.
He was married to Isabel, daughter of Percy Avery Rockefeller, and
granddaughter of William Rockefeller and James Jewett Stillman. His
children were Florence (married William Rockefeller, George Sloane,
Bartow Farr), twins Frederic and Isabel, Hope (married Reginald Gorton
Coombe), and Mary "Polly" (married to Sidney Linier)
* Hope Lincoln was also a bride's maid at the wedding of Dorothy
Walker and Prescott Sheldon Bush.
James Stillman Rockefeller (June 8, 1902 - August 10, 2004) was a
member of the prominent U.S. Rockefeller family.
A paternal grandson of William Rockefeller, his maternal grandfather
James Stillman and uncle James Alexander Stillman served as president
of the National City Bank of New York, now Citibank. His father was
William Goodsell Rockefeller and his motherSarah Elizabeth Stillman.
He graduated from Yale University in 1924, where he was elected to the
secret society Scroll and Key. That same year Rockefeller captained a
crew of Yale teammates, winning a gold medal in rowing at the 1924
Summer Olympics in Paris, France and appeared on the cover of Time
magazine on July 7, 1924. (Dr. Benjamin Spock, who would later become
a famous expert on child-care, was a member of the crew.)
On April 15, 1925, he married Nancy Carnegie, grand-niece of Andrew
Carnegie. During World War II, Rockefeller served in the Airborne
Command.
James Stillman Rockefeller joined the National City Bank in 1930 after
working at Brown Brothers Harriman and served as president from 1952
to 1959 and chairman from 1959 to 1967. It was during his tenure that
the bank merged with the smaller First National Bank and took the name
The First National City Bank of New York.
(Under each of his successors, the bank's name has changed: George
Moore shortened it to "First National City Bank" and formed a holding
company, First National City Corp.; under Walter Wriston these became
"Citibank" and "Citicorp"; under John Reed the firm merged with
Travelers Group to become Citigroup.
James Stillman Rockefeller also concerned himself with other family
investments, and prior to his death was America's oldest living
Olympic champion, and the earliest living cover subject of Time
magazine.
On August 5, 2004, Rockefeller suffered a stroke. His advance
directives for medical care specified that he not be put on life
support. He died at 4am on August 10, 2004, at the age of 102.
