Re: [Clamav-users] Problem downloading 0.95.3 from website

2009-12-30 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there --

I bring up a web browser, firefox or konqueror, and connect to the
www.clamav.com website.
Once I am there, I click on the lastest ClamAV release hyperlink, and on the
next page I
click on the ClamAV 0.95.3 link located under the Production Quality Releases
section.

When I am prompted, I click on the save file option, and I specify the location
on the local
system. The download commences, but then fails just as it reaches the 100
percent mark. The
error message that I see is the following:

clamav-0.95.3.tar.gz.part could not be saved, because the source file could not
be read.

Any thoughts?

Hmmm, well the ...part file is not the one you want. You want the
identical file without the .part suffix on it (that would be the whole
file). Have you checked to see whether it is present?

Re: [Clamav-users] opensuse11.1 loses network connection duringa cronjob that utilizes freshclam and clamscan

2009-01-09 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there --

I reconfigured the network cards on the server in question so that one is
disabled, and
the other is set to autonegotiate. Additionally, I updated the BIOS for the
motherboard
and the NIC on the server. Even with these new configurations, the problem where
the
server lost its connection to the network still occurred.

I manually ran the script that is the scheduled cron job, and I was able to
track when
the network connection was lost. The disconnect occurred about five minutes into
the
anti-virus scan.

Attached to this e-mail is the script that is run as well as the output summary
text file.
Just as a recap, the server in question is running openSuSE 11.1 which was
updated from
the openSuSE 10.3 version. The version of ClamAV is the 0.94.2 release that was
compiled
and installed from source.

One thought came to mind: Would the removal of the source version of ClamAV and
then having
it replaced by the one that comes bundled with openSuSE be a solution to this
issue?

Losing your net connection is unlikely to have anything to do with
ClamAV.

Barring unusual circumstances (setting up a bridge or some kind of
link aggregation or trunking like Cisco's FEC or CARP), you should not
configure two NICs with the the same IP. Barring unusual
circumstances, such as connecting to a defective switch, you should
never need to disable ethernet autonegotiation. This said, there are
some other reasons which might cause the link to fail; some platforms
have an integrated remote management platform layered on top of a
normal NIC, which can interfere with ARP and normal operation of the
interface-- usually a BIOS firmware update or adjusting the BIOS to
disable the management stuff helps.

I glanced at the output and it indicated that ClamAV was traversing
through /sys and trying to read some of the sysfs files. I think that
writing to some of those files will cause the kernel to perform certain
actions. This may depend on which options you have enabled in your
kernel. Possibly, reading a certain file may somehow cause a device to
be disabled or reset. There is the remotest chance that it may cause the
kernel to perform some action which would cause you to lose network
activity. I don't know much about the kernel, but I don't think this is
supposed to happen. However, it would be a good idea to tell clamav not
to read kernel-based virtual filesystems such as /proc and /sys.
I think that adding --exclude /proc --exclude /sys to the arguments
passed to clamscan or clamdscan will prevent clam trying to scan these
directories. But I can't guarantee that having clam not read these files
will fix the network-disconnecting problem.

[Clamav-users] opensuse11.1 loses network connection during a cronjob that utilizes freshclam and clamscan

2009-01-07 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there --

One of our servers had opensuse 11.1 installed as an upgrade from opensuse 10.3
on Monday of this week,
and has lost its network connection twice in as many days. The network cards on
the server, of which one is
currently in use and the other is up with the same ip address but not currently
connected to the network, are
the NetXtreme BCM5722 gigabit ethernet PCI express model. The cards are
configured to run at 100Mbps
Full Duplex with Autonegotiation turned off.

A check of the Online Update utility, with the filter set to Needed Patches, did
not list anything at the present time.

The time of the disconnect from the network appears to be around 11:30 at night.
This coincides with a cron
job that runs a script designed to initiate the freshclam virus definition
update script, and subsequently run the
clamscan utility. The version of clamav is the 0.94.2 release. The application
was installed via the source .gz files.
I am suspicious of this being the cause, but it is something that deserves
mention. The script that is utilized
has been included as an attachment to this e-mail.

Has anyone seen this before, and know what the cause is as well as how it can be
corrected? Thanks.

[Clamav-users] Problem Running Freshclam

2008-03-31 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there -

I was checking the logs of one of our servers, and I discovered the automated
freshclam process failed

to update the virus definitions. I checked on the mirror-problem page, and went
through the motions of

renaming the mirrors.dat file, and manually running the freshclam utility with
the -v option. A new files

was created, and a diff command indicated there was no difference between the
new and original version

of the file. Even after I had done that, the error output appeared on-screen. An
excerpt of the output is

shown below:

freshclam.conf is working.

I confirmed that DNS is operational on the system in question. The server is
running Fedora Core 7 as

its operating system. The version of ClamAV is 0.92.1, and it runs in
conjunction with SpamAssassin 3.2.4,

and MailScanner 4.64.3 on a Sendmail 8.14.1 release.

Does anyone have an idea of what needs to be done to correct this? Thanks.

You would be better off using a DNS server that allows you to recurse.
There are multiple IPs and I would imagine they could change at any

[Clamav-users] Question About Version 0.91.2

2007-08-27 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there -

I am prepared to upgrade our servers to version 0.91.2 of ClamAV, but I read
several e-mails that mentioned

operational problems with that version. Have these issues been resolved, or
should I wait for the next version

that is released later this year? Thanks.

[Clamav-users] clamd issue

2007-06-22 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there -

I was checking the clamav, version 90.2, processes on our system, and I noticed
the clamd daemon was not running. When I did a status

check, the output read clamd dead but subsys locked. I restarted the daemon, but
I am concerned that there was not monitoring going on

during the time the daemon was not running.

Has anyone seen this issue, and know what, if anything, needs to be done to
correct it? Thanks.

[Clamav-users] Freshclam not updating

2007-03-08 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there --

I recently upgraded clamav to version 0.90.1. The method that I used was
downloading the Fedora Core 5 binaries into a single directory,
and running the rpm -Uvh *.rpm command. The installation completed successfully.
I checked the log files earlier today and I came across
the following message:

The ClamAV update process (freshclam daemon) was not running!
If you no longer wish to run freshclam, deleting the freshclam.log
file will suppress this error message.

I tried restarting the freshclam daemon via the /etc/init.d/freshclam script,
and while it did appear to restart successfully, the following error
message appeared onscreen:

Starting freshclam: ERROR: Parse error at line 44: Option
AllowSupplementaryGroups requires boolean argument.

What change(s) do I need to make to what file(s) in order to correct this
problem, and ensure that freshclam does update properly? Thanks.

[Clamav-users] Upgrading ClamAV

2006-10-18 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there -

I received a warning message indicating that my ClamAV installation is outdated.
The version that I am running is 0.88.4, while

the recommended version is 0.88.5. I downloaded the Fedora Core 5 rpm packages
as the installation method for the program.

These came from the Binary packages page of the clamav website.

Can I use yum update clamav or up2date -u clamav as the upgrade methods, or do I
need to take a different route? Thanks.

[Clamav-users] Re: Commercial Scanner ClamAV Timed Out Error Message

2006-08-09 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
That's from MailScanner, indirectly from clamav.

If there is a problem with ClamAV, perhaps the first step would be to upgrade
ClamAV to version 0.88.1?
At the very least it would help determine if the problem lies with the
anti-virus software. Your thoughts?

One user only? What kind of configuration do you have, MailScanner +
MailWatch?

At this point it appears to be only one user, although another user did report a
relatively high amount of
virus warnings. The configuration we have is MailScanner 4.54-1 with ClamAV
0.88.1 and SpamAssassin 3.03.

[Clamav-users] Commercial Scanner ClamAV Timed Out Error Message

2006-08-07 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there -

I am running clamav 0.88.1 on an HP-UX 10.20 trusted workstation. I am getting a
series of the following

error messages in the mail.log file:

Commercial Scanner ClamAV Timed Out!

Virus Scanning: Denial of Service attack detected!

This appears to be affecting only one user. However, that user is getting virus
warnings on virtually all his

incoming mail. I am guessing the user's mailbox is somehow corrupted and the
vast majority of these

messages are false positives that are attributed to the state of the user's
mailbox.

My plan is to delete this existing mailbox and create a new one for the user. My
question is, is/are there

steps that I can take prior to doing the above act? Are there file(s) that I can
look at or modify to correct

this issue? Thanks.

[Clamav-users] Re: Problem Upgrading ClamAV on HP-UX 10.20

2006-02-09 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
OK Andrew, you'll have to repeat the build with:

 CFLAGS=-D_XOPEN_SOURCE ./configure

 make

I ran the above command using the following syntax:

CFLAGS=-D_XOPEN_SOURCE  ./configure

As has happened before, the configure script appeared to complete without
difficulty. The make command resulted in

Error exit code 1. The gcc line preceding the error is as follows:

gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DCL_NOTHREADS -I. -I. -I.. -I../shared -I../libclamav
-I/usr/local/include -D_XOPEN_SOURCE= -c manager.c

The h_errno text appeared shortly afterwards in the following manner:

manager.c:503: 'h_errno' undeclared (first use in this function)

manager.c:503: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once

manager.c:503: for each function it appears in.)

The Error exit code 1 (three lines total) then appears.

Also, at the suggestion of another mail list member, I tried the following with
the configure script:

./configure (YOUR SETTINGS) CFLAGS=-D_XOPEN_SOURCE EXTENDED
-I/usr/tools/gcc3/include LDFLAGS=-L/usr/tools/gcc3/lib

The end-result was the configure script failing with the error message:

checking for C compiler default output file name--- configure: error: C compiler
cannot create executables. See 'config.log' for more details.

[Clamav-users] Re: Problem Upgrading ClamAV on HP-UX 10.20

2006-02-09 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
 The configure line should be:

   CFLAGS=-D_XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED ./configure

(there is an underscore before EXTENDED).

That should work, but you are not finished, you'll have to check how the
shared
libraries are set up in the resulting executables.

But let's do one thing at a time, just configure and make.

I entered the command shown above verbatum, but got the following error message:

CFLAGS=-D_XOPEN+SOURCE_EXTENDED: Command not found.

When I reentered the above command using the syntax:

./configure CFLAGS=-D_XOPEN+SOURCE_EXTENDED

the configure script ran without a problem.

The make command continues to give me an Error exit code 1 message. While the
gcc line that precedes the message read as follows:

gcc -D_XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED -o clamscan output.o geptopt.o memory.o
cfgparser.o misc.o clamscan.o options.o others.o manager.o treewalk.o
-L/usr/local/lib ../libclamav/.libs/libclamav.a.a -lz -lbz2
/usr/local/lib/libgmp.sl -Wl,+b -Wl,/usr/local/lib

This was followed by the lines:

/usr/ccs/bin/ld: Unsatisfied symbols:
ntohl (code)
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Followed by the Error exit code 1 lines.

2006-02-09 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
OK, this is normal, we are missing some libraries in the link command. Easy
to

 correct:

 ./configure CFLAGS=-D_XOPEN+SOURCE_EXTENDED LDFLAGS=-lsocket -lnls

When I ran the above command, the configure script failed and displayed the
following message:

checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler
cannot create executables

See 'config.log' for more details. Enclosed in this e-mail is the config.log
file.

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by configure, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.59. Invocation command line was

  $ ./configure CFLAGS=-D_XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED LDFLAGS=-lsocket -lnls

Anyway the LDFLAGS need a correction, just delete the -lsocket part, the log
shows that the socket library doesn't exist.

I entered the configure command without -lsocket part, and the script failed
with the same error mentioned in the previous e-mail.

Here is the latest version of the config.log file.

2006-02-08 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
There are 3 tests inside configure that use netdb.h and h_errno, they seem to
be testing to see what variant of gethostbyname_r does the system have. You
should have the result in config.log, look for lines that say checking for
gethostbyname_r and everything below that should be

interesting, but we are really looking for something like result: yes, and it
takes 5 arguments about 9 lines below.

What we are trying to do is see what is causing the build failure. In theory
configure should have catched any problem.

I checked the config.log file for the text you had mentioned: and the line reads
configure:13334: result: yes, and it takes 5 arguments

Do you need me to send you a copy of the log file?

[Clamav-users] Re: Problem Upgrading ClamAV on HP-UX 10.20

2006-02-08 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
OK, that means that configure is able to use h_errno and related stuff, which
is good news.

Now look in the log about 8 lines above (and just below the checking for
gethostbyname_r), how was the test compiled?

I have gcc -c -g -O2 conftest.c 5, does your log show more parameters to
gcc?

The line in question reads as follows:configure:13162: gcc -c -g 02
-I/usr/local/include conftest.c 5

The following text appears immediately after: cc1: warning: changing search
order for system directory /usr/local/include

cc1: warning: as it has already
been specified as a non-system directory

BTW try to use the installed gcc (2.95.2), if you use the newer one you'll
have to install it later so that libgcc is somewhere permanent.

Perhaps starting with no environment variables set will help.

I contacted the administrator, who has since left the company, of this system,
and asked him about the locally installed gcc (2.95.2). Here is an excerpt from
the e-mail he sent in reply:

The Makefile looks ok. I think the problem is the gcc version. You will have
to mount /usr/tools and use the gcc installed on that to compile ClamAV. The
one under /usr/contrib is no good.

[Clamav-users] Re: Problem Upgrading ClamAV on HP-UX 10.20

2006-02-08 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
I suggest to start with a minimal set of well defined environment variables
(PATH, CC, CFLAGS, LDFLAGS, nothing else), run configure, see any

complaints there, add the required parameters to configure (the defaults
install everything under /usr/local,

 I use --sysconfdir=/etc --enable-id- check --without-libcurl
--with-dbdir=/usr/local/share/clamav) and run make.

I defined the environment variables to use by entering the following at the
command prompt:

  setenv CFLAGS -I/usr/tools/gcc3/include

  setenv LDFLAGS -L/usr/tools/gcc3/lib

  setenv CPPFLAGS -L/usr/tools/gcc3/include

I then went ran the configure script. I checked for the result: yes, and it
takes 5 arguments line, and it was there. The other important line,

gcc -c -I/usr/tools/gcc3/include -L/usr/tools/gcc3/include -I/usr/local/include
conftest.c 5 was also there.

Unfortunately, the same error messages appeared.

[Clamav-users] Re: Problem Upgrading ClamAV on HP-UX 10.20

2006-02-08 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Let's step back for a minute once again. On your 10.20, system, go and look at
/usr/include/netdb.h . Find the section where it defines h_errno

which is a macro that will be defined to either a function call or an external
variable depending on if the macro _REENTRANT is defined at compile

time. (On 11.11, it is right at the end of the file).

What do the definitions for h_errno look like on 10.20?

The following text in the netdb.h file is what references h_errno:

/*

* Error return codes from gethostbyname() and gethostbyaddr()

* (left in extern int h_errno).

#ifdef  _XOPEN_SOURCE EXTENDED

extern int h_errno;

#endif

 setenv CFLAGS -I/usr/tools/gcc3/include

 setenv LDFLAGS -L/usr/tools/gcc3/lib

 setenv CPPFLAGS -L/usr/tools/gcc3/include

This last one is wrong, cpp is the pre-processor it doesn't have anything to
do with libraries so -L is a no-op.

I can try running the configure and make script again using only the first two
setenv options and see if that makes a difference.

This was a ./configure followed by make?

That is correct. The configure script is run, and then is immediately followed
by the make script. There are no other configuration

settings made in the interim.

What's the exact gcc line before the error message? it's important that it
looks like the one in conf.log, same order of -I's.

The gcc line before the error message is the following:

  gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DCL_NOTHREADS -I. -I. -I.. -I.. -I../shared
-I../libclamav -L/usr/tools/gcc3/include -I/usr/local/include

Try adding -D_XOPEN_SOURCE EXTENDED to your CFLAGS.

I entered the setenv command three times using the following syntax:

  setenv CFLAGS -I/usr/tools/gcc3/include

  setenv LDFLAGS -L/usr/tools/gcc3/lib

  setenv CFLAGS -D_XOPEN_SOURCE EXTENDED

After that, I ran the configure script, and it returned with the error message

Hi there --

I mounted an NFS directory that has a newer version of gcc/ I then mounted tthe
following lines to my .cshrc file:

 setenv GCC_PATH /usr/tools/gcc3

 setenv PATH ${GCC_PATH}/bin:${PATH}

 setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH ${GCC_PATH}/lib

 alias gcc /usr/tools/gcc3/

After the changes were made, I ran source .cshrc to have them go into effect.

I then went through the motions of running the configure script and then the
make command. I encountered an Exit Status 1 error, although the cause of the
error seems different than before.

I've included it in this e-mail as an attachment. Is there something else I need
to do? Thanks.

I made the changes you had suggested to the .cshrc file.

  setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH ${GCC_PATH}/lib

This won't work, get rid of it.

I commented out that line.

  alias gcc /usr/tools/gcc3/

What's this for? Don't use this, first check if changing your path gives you
the new gcc: `which gcc` and `gcc --version`

I commented out that line as well, ran source .cshrc and then ran which gcc and
gcc --version. The which gcc command gave me

the following output: gcc: aliased to /usr/tools/gcc3/. When I ran the gcc
--version command, I got the following message:

/usr/tools/gcc3/: Permission denied. When I ran the gcc --version command as
sudo user, the following appeared onscreen:

Gcc (GCC) 3.1

You can do this if you have a cc on the PATH:

 CC=gcc ./configure ...

Or to avoid the older gcc:

 CC=/usr/tools/gcc3/bin/gcc ./configure ...

I didn't make changes to the PATH as of yet.

When I ran the make command as sudo and a regular user, the following error
message appeared:

Cc1: warning: changing search order for system directory /usr/local/include

Cc1: warning: as it has already been specified as a non-system directory

Perhaps setting the header path explicitly, as in:

 CFLAGS=-I/usr/include ./configure ...

I don't know into which file the CFLAGS line goes, or if it gets executed from
the command prompt.

When I ran the make script as a regular user, I got an error 1 message due to a
permission denied error.

I also tried adding the SHLIB_PATH variable to the .cshrc file. The results were
the same if I tried to

compile as a regular or sudo user.

[Clamav-users] Re: Problem Upgrading ClamAV on HP-UX 10.20

2006-02-07 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
No file, the above is the command typed on a terminal to configure the
package.

It may be different under csh, but you can use 'setenv CFLAGS
-I/usr/include'

 before running ./configure

I ran the command setenv CFLAGS -I/usr/include as a regular user and it seemed
to accept the command.

When I did the same thing as root, I needed to include the full pathname to the
setenv binary.

I have a question: did you execute configure just before make?

There may be left over temporary files wich belong to root and no regular user
can delete. I think that's the reason for the permission denied message.

I did execute configure just before make, but that was after I ran the make
distclean command. That should have taken care of all files, unless there is
another directory involved in the compilation procedure.

I wouldn't set SHLIB_PATH or any library path; the reason is that you were
setting it to the mounted directory and it's better to leave the path pointing
to the regular libraries which won't dissapear when you unmount the directory.

I removed the SHLIB_PATH command from the .cshrc file, and tried the procedure
again, without success...I am at a loss here.

When compiling version 0.88 of ClamAV, will version 2.95.2 work, or do I need to
upgrade to a newer version of gcc?

This is a correct definition. It's not surrounded by #if ... #fi, is it?

If the file needs to be located in /usr/local, can a symbolic link be created
in /usr/local that points to /usr/include?

No, that was my mistake, I wrote the wrong path.

Now back to the original problem, why are those warnings appearing? Looking at
the code the warning means that h_errno cannot take the value HOST_NOT_FOUND,
h_errno is also defined in netdb.h just above the define.

I can't see how the compiler determined that this part of the code is supposed
to be unreachable (it really is reachable).

That's two strange thing with the compilation, where is the -Werror? and why the
compiler mistakenly thinks that some part of the code is unreachable?

Perhaps I can think of something later.

Andrew,
Let's step back a minute have you ever been able to compile
ANY version of ClamAV on your 10.20 machine? Or, is this your first
attempt?

It does not look like ClamAV is one of the packages that
hpux.connect.org.uk has ported.

[Clamav-users] Problem Upgrading to version 0.88 on HP-UX 10.20

2006-02-02 Thread Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there -

I have downloaded the source code for version 0.88 onto an HP-UX 10.20 system.
After gunzipping and untarring the file, I

run the configure script as a sudo user and it appears to finish without
problem. When I run the make command, again as

a sudo user, I get an Error exit code 1. The tail end of the make output is
shown below:

manager.c:505: warning: unreachable code at beginning of switch statement

manager.c:568: warning: unreachable code at beginning of switch statement

*** Error exit code 1

Stop.

*** Error exit code 1

Stop.

*** Error exit code 1

Stop.

What do I need to do to correct this? Thanks.

HI there --

I checked my .login and .cshrc files for any CLAGS reference, and there was
none. I also checked the d.profile and profile files with the same result.

Is there an option in the configure script that changes the gcc option?

You are using an option in the compiler that causes warnings to be treated as
errors, that is why this build failed.

With gcc the option is -Werror, perhaps you did put that in CFLAGS or your
envirnoment setting have it.

Andrew,

Let's go back to:

manager.c:505: warning: unreachable code at beginning of switch statement
manager.c:568: warning: unreachable code at beginning of switch statement

These 2 warnings shouldn't happen.

Do you have a netdb.h file? Must be under /usr/local but could be somewhere
else if you installed bind (for instance under /usr/local/include/isc).

Does it have a define for HOST_NOT_FOUND?

If it doesn't, and it looks this way for those warnings to appear, then your
resolver installation is bad or somewhere else.

The point is clamav's configure found a netdb.h that does not define
HOST_NOT_FOUND, that produced the warning, and that header is not what is
normally expected. You have to find out where did that header came from, and if
you have more than one by that name, how to use the good one to build clamav.
