No - I have several systems around the world running ClamAV, each running a
single instance. The update process can be very bureaucratic.

Okay, you sound like you have two (2) problems here. did you,in fact,
edit the example config file /etc/freshclam.conf and clamd.conf like the
error said? what are the contents of those two files.

second problem...in the webmin module config, you have to tell it the
config files are at /etc/clamd.conf, etc.

Or webmin nuked your config files...you DID save a copy before letting
webmin loose on them, right?

It's rather a SESSION related bug. See my yesterday's post on a

This fix was related to clamav-milter right? We don't use it, don't
 have the milter package
installed at all (built own rpm from source), so should we install the

 to fix the clamd bug?

In your case it's rather a zlib problem. Make sure you have installed
the new version properly - by default its Makefile only installs the
static library.

Tried on 1 box that had the problem.
Compiled zlib 1.2.2-1 from source, with shared libraries.
This morning it happened again Is there anything else we can try or

attach gdb to the running clamd and do a backtrace *in each thread* when
it crashes or stops responding

PS: you say its a zlib problem, what specifically is this problem?

It seg faults due to not handling an error correctly.

I just checked, and the problem is that clamd no more hangs but disapear.
So it may crash.
The problem is that it does run with / as current dir but not as uid root.
So it can't core dumps.

You must use attach gdb to the running clamd process and then wait for
it to mis-behave:

Something like the following should work out ok:

1. Use 'ps' to get the PID of clamd:
ps -aux (ps -elf on SYSV)

clamav 24897 0.0 1.9 38032 10068 ? SJan13 0:00 clamd
  ^ pid

2. Attach gdb to the running process
  gdb /usr/local/bin/clamd 24897
^--- path to ^--- process id, from above
clamd binary

3. you should now get the gdb prompt, as: (gdb)

4. type the command 'cont' to continue normal operation

5. wait for crash

6. you should now get the gdb prompt, as: (gdb)

7. the command 'bt' will give a backtrace for the current thread.
The command 'info threads' will tell you how many threads there are.
The command 'thread n' will change to the specified thread, after
which you
can use the 'bt' command again to get it's backtrace.

So, you basically want to do:
 a. 'info threads' to get the number of threads and their id numbers
 b. for each thread do:
thread id number
bt

8. exit from gdb with the 'quit' command. Reply 'y' to the question
about the
program still running.

Ok, so I did not use gdb as gdb core dump (maybe because I compiled
clamav with sun cc). I used dbx and here is the backtrace :
I can send you the email that was scanned.

This is a known problem when using Sun's cc. Recompile with gcc.

This fix was related to clamav-milter right? We don't use it, don't have the

In your case it's rather a zlib problem. Make sure you have installed
the new version properly - by default its Makefile only installs the
static library.

[Clamav-users] Problem with clamd hanging

2005-01-21 Thread goudal

Hello,

I'm running clamd (clamav 0.80) on a solaris 9 server in front of amavisd
2.2.1 with a local unix socket.

About 2 hours after we start clamd it stops accepting requests. The daemon is
running, there is non special message either in amavis log or clamd log.

It does not work either with clamdscan with a connection refused message. I
have not seen any thing about such problem in the mailing-list archive.

I have been running clamav 0.80 on solaris with local unix socket since

Is that the reason it left files in $TempDir???

As usual, it depends on what the bottleneck is with your hardware.

You can tune the thread settings to the number of CPUs and the amount of
concurrent traffic you get.

The most likely bottleneck will be I/O. If you've got lots of spare
memory you could but the clam TMPDIR on a RAM disk. Or you could improve
things by having it on a dedicated disk, and tune the filesystem for
fast throughput (no atime, no journalling).

To be honest, ClamAV is unlikely to be a problem unless you are handling
millions of messages a day. How many are you doing?

You can compile clamav with specific optimizations for your CPU using gcc
options (see -march, -O, -mfpmath -msse -mmmx -m3dnow etc...)
By this way, you can own a few % of speed for each scanned files.

[Clamav-users] Problem with clamd - clues welcome

2005-01-19 Thread Odhiambo Washington

I am having a strange problem with clamd. It has become the biggest
bottleneck on my SMTP service but I just can't figure out why.
Perhaps this is not a clamd problem but a hardware problem!
I have tested both clamav-0.80 and clamav-devel-20050120 today.

On my diagnostics, the mail processing seems to delay forever
when the mail is being scanned. I use Exim+exiscan+clamd. So
an SMTP connection from a client machine (read Outlook) ends
up timing out! This has put me on the spot, but I have no
alternative to clamd as we speak, and neither do I intend to.

For the last 4 or so days, this problem as persisted. And
clamd leaves so many files in the TempDir - running to hundreds of
Megabytes. In clamd.conf, I have never enabled that option of
leaving tempfiles. In clamd.conf, I am using the default scan options.

`top` reveals that clamd is hogging resources:

PID USERNAME PRI NICE SIZERES STATE C TIME WCPUCPU COMMAND
12203 exim -6 0 22308K 15944K biord 2 16:35 45.41% 45.41% clamd

This is a busy server, but are these figures 'near' normal for anyone
running either 0.80 or CVS out there?

[Clamav-users] Problem with clamd when database reloads

2004-03-10 Thread Robert Blayzor
Using clamd devel-20040304 on FreeBSD 4.9

On several occasions now we've noticed that when clamd checks and reloads
the virus database current clamdscan's hang and then time out.

This causes some real problems on a process that uses clamdscan as it thinks
clamd is dead and then just bombs out.

Last messages in the clamd.log are:

Tue Mar 9 19:59:40 2004 - SelfCheck: Database modification detected.
Forcing reload.
Tue Mar 9 19:59:40 2004 - Reading databases from /usr/local/share/clamav
Tue Mar 9 20:06:54 2004 - Database correctly reloaded (20426 viruses)
Tue Mar 9 20:06:54 2004 - /var/tmp/scavs/22217/5/msg-6-2.bin:
Worm.SomeFool.Gen-1 FOUND

When checking clamd manually it appears to be running ok... It just whenever
a database reload happens at the time either a clamdscan is in progress or
one is trying to initiate during a reload, the clamdscan process just
hangs...

Any ideas on how to fix this or if more recent devel code has addressed this
issue?

[Clamav-users] problem starting clamd

I am having trouble starting clamd on a debian box and was hoping
someone could help. The basic error I am getting is ...

The problem seems to be creating the socket, I have the following in my

[clamav-users] Problem with clamd...

2003-06-18 Thread David Dubois
Dear all,

I tested the latest snapshot on my debian box,
but it don't work too( like the snapshot before)

Here are my versions:

Clamav-milter :
Clamd :

Clamav-milter works fine
Clamd after about a day of using became DEFUNCT
like this:

clamav 31425 0.0 2.4 Jun17 0:00 /usr/local/sbin/clamd
clamav 31426 0.0 2.4 Jun17 0:00 /usr/local/sbin/clamdDefunct
clamav 31427 0.0 2.4 Jun17 0:00 /usr/local/sbin/clamd

I compiled all with this option:
./configure --enable-milter --disable-bzip2 --disable-urandom
--enable-id-check --disable-clamuko --enable-debug --enable-bigstack

clamav-milter has this log:

recv: Connection reset by peer
clamfi_close
clamfi_eom: read nothing from clamd
clamfi_abort
clamav-milter: clamav-milter.c:1029: clamfi_cleanup: Assertion `privdata
!= ((void *)0)' failed.

My clamd.conf is:

LogFile /var/log/clamd.log
LogSyslog
LogVerbose
PidFile /var/clamav/clamd.pid
DataDirectory /var/lib/clamav
LocalSocket /var/clamav/clamd.sock
StreamSaveToDisk
MaxThreads 10

MaxDirectoryRecursion 15
User clamav
ScanMail
ScanArchive
ArchiveMaxFileSize 10M
ArchiveMaxRecursion 5
ArchiveMaxFiles 1000

Could any one help?
Why clamd crash after hours of using?
(in the three last snapshot)

NB: during using time, clamav works very fine..
I will be very happy to do it work all the time.

Thanks in advance,
DUBOIS David.

I tried many compilation option, because clamd crash..
I didn't read that.

I will remove this option next compilation.

  LogVerbose
  PidFile /var/clamav/clamd.pid
  DataDirectory /var/lib/clamav
  LocalSocket /var/clamav/clamd.sock

Is /var/clamav owned by the clamav_user:clamav_group ??? If not
then clamav will not run, because it cannot write its socket to that
place. I see that your data directory is /var/lib/clamav. I would
change the LocalSocket to point there too..

That may not be the point ofyour problem, but one thing that I realized
is that I had to allow clamav to run as the MTA user, so that it has
privileges to scan the mail files..
I use it for a sendmail box.

/var/clamav is owned by clamav:clamav
Clamd starts and works fine but after using time (Milter/Clamd)
it crashes...

Yes, it shows up in ps, and I used the openbsd port which can be found

So I guess the fix is in it (the creator said he didn't had any

me an error.

# clamd

I have also edited the clamav.conf file and made some changes

I didn't find anything on log files that say me what line of the
file is wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank's
