No, it's got nothing to do with taxes - it's a matter of practicality;
getting budget approval for a business expense is much easier than for
charity.

You've never worked with corporate accountants, have you?

I don't have a dog in this fight because I've already begun sending in
payments, but... I think a better business model would be to go after
more accounts like Barracuda. At least there's a real relationship, a
real contract, and it's hidden (kinda) from the rest of us.

There are different types of tax -- sales tax is entirely in the eyes of
the payee, the payer has no obligation to ensure that the payee pays
taxes. Imagine if the gov't came after you for shopping at Walmart
because Walmart didn't pay enough sales tax to the gov't.

...Except that, in the US, for out of state purchases where you didn't pay
sales tax in the other state because you weren't there (mail-order and
Internet sales, in other words), you are supposed to report how much you
spent and pay local sales tax on it.

Yeah, it's stupid. But technically, that's the way it's supposed to work
at the moment.

Agreedif I can't produce a receipt of invoice for the bean
counters, its out of my pocket. Period. Doesn't matter if its $1 or
$1000.

2006-11-08 Thread Bit Fuzzy

In other words, you are looking for a tax write off.

If so, is that a crime? Or for that matter wrong?
I think not

The truth of the matter is in a business setting (especially in a
Corporate setting) you "need" to be able to show where funds are going.
If we don't get a receipt (or at least an itemized invoice), you don't
get paid. It's that simple.

Not even, just something so that the auditors have a paper trail and don't
think funds are being missapropriated.

I would imagine that the "legal entity" of ClamAV is not registered in the
same tax neighbourhood as a great may of its users and potential funders...
