Re: Stus-List Donations
My suggestion to use gofundme.com was just an example. It doesn't have to be done through them, if Stu objects. My suggestion was based on the idea that Stu should NEVER have to spend a dime out of pocket for the list or the website. His contribution, which will never come close to being matched, is his long and tireless effort to create and keep this thing going. I just felt that it might help if we knew what the goal was, and could track how far we were from reaching it. I think the notion that folks should just send Stu a few bucks when they think of it is a little too casual. Why can't we make it part of our spring commissioning lists and set a month for reaching that goal every year? I think I remember that there are about 300 people subscribed to this list. What percentage send anything at all, and how often? I know I have donated periodically, but I'm absolutely sure it was not every year. For now, with no other organized plan in place, I think I'm going to tie my donations to my subscription to Sail Magazine. Whenever I renew that subscription, I will contribute the same amount to Stu at the same time. Stus-List Ball Caps
Seveeral months ago we stopped selling the Ball Caps and for several good reasons. Gladys, the embroidery queen, wore out her $2000 sewing machine and could not justify replacing it. I learned quite a few new words when she was sewing the caps. We were purchasing decent hats wholesale and the company dropped the line and introduced a new line at almost twice the cost. The Post Office increased the cost of shipping. Shipping to the USA went from $5.00 to almost $8.00. To ship in Canada to the west coast it was over $14.00. Even having a commercial account with Canada Post, the costs were outrageous. Fedex, UPS and others out completely out of the picture. Every time the costs went up, I tried to absorb it but eventually it was costing us and Gladys got nothing for her frustrations. I'll pursue the matter this summer and see if we can get a commercial company to make the hats for us at a reasonable cost and see if there is a shipping method that is affordable. Now if you have someone who can handle a needle and thread, Gladys is still doing the embroidered CC patches on another machine. Get yourself a hat and have someone sew the patch on for you. I don't see patches on the website? Something perhaps to look into is the possibility that a bulk order of chandlery items be shipped out to a volunteer (or 2) in various areas to 1) broker for the group 2) bring along to the area's CC rendezvous? I must admit in the couple years I've had the boat I haven't made it to the PNW rendezvous yet, but I'd be willing to help out with something like that. My casting has some possibly serious cracks in it, mostly likely originating in stresses placed by a the mooring line over the bow roller when Hurricane Irene swept through New England a few years ago (with enough force to open the mooring eye by breaking a weld and bending 1-inch steel). When I first noticed the cracks, someone (who seems generally knowledgeable) in my boatyard commented not to worry (much) because, he said, the forestay itself attaches to metal embedded in the hull - in essence, that cracks in the stemhead piece overall would not threaten the rig. I'm nervous, since I realize I shouldn't just accept a person's word for it - and the cracks seem to be worsening. I suspect someone on this list may know enough about the boat's construction to give me either partial relief or full terror - does the forestay's mounting depend on the integrity of that casting overall? Re: Stus-List Awl grip deck and re-bed toe rail of 35MkI
I redid my toerails on my MK-5 when I bought her. Yes the rail darn near knocked me off my ladder when the last bolt came out. It's easy to push straight, I just was not expecting it. 1/8 butyl and a helper but it's an easy job on the MK-5 with the outward facing flange. Yours will require a tunnel rat to hold back the nuts. when you bolt back up, only turn the nuts, not the bolts. I understand this is a big project and I have professional help on core repair and the awl grip job to get it done. That said, I would greatly appreciate assistance on re-bedding the toe rail and any issues that anyone has come across in prepping the deck for priming/painting. I have given myself until next May to get everything done, although I want the toe rail re-bedded and the deck painted by this fall at the latest. I have other projects to complete over the winter-and no I will not be replacing the Atomic 4. I love my 35 mk I. Hopefully this will bring her to showroom condition. Re: Stus-List CC ball caps
Is there anyplace that would embroider good quality ball caps on demand? I know you can set up with some companies online where they handle everything and give you a cut. You pay a flat fee once to get your design set up, and then they produce them as they are ordered. No minimum number. Most of the ones I've seen only do printing on various products such as tee shirts foam ball caps and coffee mugs. If there is one that does embroidering, it might be an option that would be more agreeable to Gladys! Bill Bina On 3/18/2015 2:44 PM, Leslie Paal via CnC-List wrote: + Yes I'm in for 2. Leslie. Re: Stus-List Bottom paint -ingredient change
From the link in the email that started this thread: Irgarol: The algaecide supplied by chemical giant BASF and widely relied upon by most marine paint manufacturers to control “soft growths” like slime and plant growth that has very recently been discontinued as a bottom paint ingredient. BASF seems to have caught the bottom paint industry off guard with their announcement late last year, and while manufacturers of the Irgarol dependent paint hope that in just 6-9 months it could be in production again, there is no guarantee, and certainly these companies had to act quickly to be ready for bottom paint season with an alternative. There are a number of popular antifouling paints that are being affected by BASF’s discontinuation of Irgarol. *Pettit*: ***SR-21 http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=6735 will not be available until Irgarol is re-released (available at JD.com http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=6735) http://totalboatshow.com/wordpress/2015/03/13/antifouling-companies-struggle-with-the-loss-of-herbicide-irgarol/ Ken H. Re: Stus-List CC ball caps
I suspect one of the issues here is pricing. Gladys probably wasn't making $60/hour. :) A commercial vendor may cut our margin. I may have access to an embroidery machine. If it will do ball caps, I might be able to knock out a few for the list. Doubt mine will be as nice as the ones Gladys did. :) Even with my free labor, I suspect the price may increase just due to materials. Remember, these purchases are to help the list. We also need to explore the license issue. I've already asked Stu about that. I should have an answer next week. Dennis C.
