Re: Stus-List Annapolis to Bermuda

2015-06-08 Thread Gary Nylander via CnC-List
Joel is having a pretty good year. On May 23, he and crew sailed the Annapolis
to St. Michaels race. He was one of less than half of the fleet (of 115 or so)
which finished!

Joel Aronson and the crew of The Office are about three miles from the finish
in Newport. At this point, at least eleven of the seventy-one boats that
started have retired, for reasons from electrical and steering problems, to
torn sails from a squall that nailed the second starters, to a reason listed
only as, “Motoring to the Hamptons.”

  Congrats to Joel and company!

Stus-List Hull# (HIN) for 34+

2015-06-08 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Dave,

My 1990 34+ does have the + in the Hin number. It's imprinted on the Hull
that way and it's in the boat's official USCG docs as well (Here:
http://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/pls/webpls/cgv_pkg.vessel_id_list )

My Hin is ZCC34+34B090. It did create a little bit of a fuss with the
insurance as the unorthodox HIN was coming-up as 'Invalid with their
computer interface. My agent got around that by insuring it on agree
value and checking out a couple other comparable boats on Yachtworld. The
broker also mentioned that the HIN was unconventional but that's just the
way CC did it on their 36 ft 34+ :-)

Please feel free to ask more on questions on the list or PM me for more
info on the boat, what to look for on a purchase, etc.

Good luck with it.

Regards,
-Francois Rivard

Just had a survey done on a '90 34+ yesterday, looks good but one bit of
weirdness: the HIN has a + symbol in it, which HIN decoders say is
invalid. The HIN starts off ZCC34+

Can anyone else with a 34+ verify that this is what their HIN looks like?

Thanks!

Re: Stus-List Are original LF38 thru hulls in contact with coring?

2015-06-08 Thread Patrick Davin via CnC-List
Well that settles that, the thruhulls in the bow are not cored (under the
v-berth and behind the water tank) . Solid fiberglass it looks like.

Pic: (uploaded since attachments don't get through to the list):
http://svviolethour.com/?attachment_id=247

Note the innermost layer is the plywood backing plate, next comes some
white caulking that it was glued on with, then the hull. This pic is from
before I finished cleaning all the white glue off the fiberglass. Not sure
if the turquoise blue outer layer is the original gelcoat color, or a
barrier coat.

I was surprised, but this saves some work. The old transducer was a bear to
get out (had to cut it out).

deteriorated, but it will last longer this way.

My first haul out is coming up in 3 weeks, just for a few days to do some
small tasks like unsticking a seized seacock and maybe installing a new
speed transducer (old Datamarine one is somewhat broken).

I've read Wally's site cover to cover and know he redid his thru hulls
reaming out some core and filling with epoxy (and even glassing over). But
were all model years constructed without that done or did later CCs start
sealing their thru hulls better? It's surprising to me that they wouldn't
have protected the core out of the factory.

Do I need to inspect all thru hulls or only prior-owner installed ones? I
might postpone this till the fall since it'll be a big job, just wondering
if it's worth pulling one now (even that I don't expect to be easy).

If all cored CCs were installed with coring abutting the thruhull, I'm
surprised it doesn't sound like everyone has redone them (it looks like
only 2 or 3 people have asked about it on the list - although more may have
done it). Or is the concern overdone? From the standpoint of don't mess
with it if it ain't broke maybe it's better to just do nothing. Except
that the plywood backing plates are wet/decayed, so eventually I'll need to
at least do something with those (which may or may not involve replacing
 the seacock and thruhull too).

Stus-List Made it home!

2015-06-08 Thread Bradley Lumgair via CnC-List

Well, after several trips back and forth from Sarnia to Muskegon, we made the
trip. Travelled over a week ago Friday and after a weather delay, set out
Monday June 1. A bit rough on Lake Michigan and after 13 hours we put up in
Ludington for the night, cold wet and tired. Had a great dinner in an Irish
pub. figured out that autohlem won't work unless all the wires are plugged in.
and were on our way at the crack of 10 am headed for Mac. 25 hours and a
beautiful moonlit night later (greys reef at sun-up) we arrived and overnighted
in mackinaw city. Thursday and Friday were spent on Lake Huron where we saw
most conditions, fog, wind, rain, fog again, no sunshine and lots of jumbled
waves. Arrived in Sarnia a bit before midnight Friday. US coastguard had squall
warning and later a thunderstorm warning on Friday.
We added a little automotive heater I had picked up at Princess auto that took
the chill out of the cabin and made it MUCH more comfortable. Engine ran
flawlessly and the instruments all worked well once we got things dialled and
plugged in. We're real happy with our CC. I think our biggest issue was
slippage in the throttle linkage which we solved with a short piece of cord to
hold the throttle position and one of the rope clutches continued to slip so we
cleated the main halyard. Is there a dry lube that can be used on the sliding
parts of the spinlock rope clutches?
Thanks for your help and suggestions this spring.

Steve — do you have a linear electric drive? If so, it sounds like the gearing
has finally worn out. You can replace with another linear Type 1 drive; or if
your course computer will handle the current, replace with a hydraulic drive
like the Octopus drive. Feel free to contact me off-list to discuss further.

Subject: Stus-List Spreader Boot Size CC 32

I have simple question. I need to know the spreader boot size on a 1981 CC
32 #109? This would save me a trip up the mast to take measurements.

Both of the old ones are gone, Ace yard man after a move.

Thanks, Arnold {:-)

Stus-List 37 and 34 +/XL/R cabin-side plates

2015-06-08 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Edd,

Try to get a hold of David Mocny he's a lister and owns a 37+ on my lake.
I visited his boat last year I'm pretty sure I remember he re-did his and
it looks good. (You can PM me for his phone)

Good luck,

Listers,

I think this was covered a couple of years ago, but can't find it.

I'm looking to replace the broken plates that are on the sides of the
cabin. They are long, rectangular, with curved corners and they had a
raised CC 37+ on it.

I seem to remember someone getting a steel version somewhere.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

All the best,

Edd
Regards

Re: Stus-List CC30-1 climb to top of mast?

2015-06-08 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Get a teenager to do it. Much lighter and less knowledgable.

The teenager will love the ride up the mast and will have a great conversation
with you from the mast top to the deck. Then after you lower him down you will
go up anyway because the teenager didn’t know how to do it …

The 30-1 has a telephone pole for a mast. Very stable boat. Remember the
loads also on your main halyards when pulling that up. You are fine. Make
sure any tools are well secured

Bowlines don't work so good with wire, but I have followed the same procedure
otherwise.
Bought an ascender based Mast Climber at a boat show last year, but have not
tried it out yet.

You use two halyards; you go up on the main; the jib is used as a spare. Don't
use the clips; tie bowlines.

Jay,
I'm around 225 and just did it on my CC34. And years ago was the go-to guy on
a J30. Scary that on that crew, I was both youngest and lightest... Yikes.
Not a bad ride, just have a good chair, and good guys in the winch.
Good luck,

On larger boats we send someone up the mast to retrieve halyards etc, but has
anyone done this on a 30-1?
I wonder if 200lbs at the top to install a new windex is too much of a risk of
damage or injury. Has anyone lived to tell the story?
Cheers,
Jay
