Re: Stus-List Sydney Hobart Race

2015-12-26 Thread David Lenehan via CnC-List
This time, as I see it, it hasn't been too bad though clearly
uncomfortable. Wild Oats XI lost her main in 40 knots of wind. It's been
much, much worse. In the 1984 race, 104 retired out of 150 starters. THAT
was brutal. We got knocked down three times.

I believe it has a luff rope (no slides) and is loose footed. It was the
better of the two mains that came with the boat. I don't recall the name of
the sailmaker, but it was not North, Quantum or UK. Probably someone local to
southern VA where the boat came from. there is still a sail repair tag on it,
but I don't remember what was done.

All,

my new main has arrived. I have an old but usable dacron main I no longer
need. It should fit a 35 or Landfall 38.

Just pay shipping and add battens Otherwise it will become a duffle bag.

Re: Stus-List Zinc decay

2015-12-26 Thread Neil Gallagher via CnC-List

David,

I'm at the other end of Long Island Sound, and I too noticed an
unusually rapid deterioration of my shaft zinc. Usually it's only 1/2
gone over the whole season, but this year I could see it going much
faster over the summer and it was totally gone, as is not there, when I
was hauled out.

I haven't given it much thought until your post, but the water quality
in LI Sound was different this year than in the recent past. It was
much more clear, and there was an incredible amount of fish in the
Sound, even humpback whales in Hempstead Harbor. Not sure if that has
anything to do with increased galvanic activity, but now I'm wondering.

Hi Dennis,

Having done a few of these, I can assure you that it's a wild ride most
years. It's just that some are far worse. There's a lot of emphasis on
how bad 1998 was (six sailors died) but, frankly, I think 1984 was worse.
The really bad years come around about every seven years. Sometimes eight,
sometimes six but seven year cycles are the norm. And it's no fun on the
serious contenders. Every second is vital for those guys and for some
there are millions of dollars involved. Personally, I'm pleased I gave it
away after five races (including 1984).

I do agree that it's quite a spectacle. Yesterday afternoon the supermaxis
were making 22 knots under spinnaker. Then the southerly hit. At this
point it appears that 10 boats (out of 108) have officially retired (lots
of broken rudders) while a couple of others are trying to make repairs so
they can continue. The (line honours) leaders are currently beating into a
southerly and are just entering Bass Strait.

Haven't seen any video since about dusk last night.

Hope that update helps,

Re: Stus-List Zinc decay

2015-12-26 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
The camp x-4 zincs have a little copper ball in them that contacts the
shaft. Any chance that they were making better or worse contact between
different years? The yard guys wack the hell out of them while alternately
tightening the screws in a torque pattern. Use a wire brush to clean and
rough up the shaft and the zinc before installing.

I'm kinda grasping at straws, sorry.

Re: Stus-List New beer can Genoa

2015-12-26 Thread Gary Nylander via CnC-List
The last two times I have bought headsails for Penniless, the sailmakers
have suggested dacron. It slowly degrades over time and can be re-cut. My
previous high-tech sails had collapsed suddenly (two out of four headsails
over 20+ years). I went with a local sailmaker who specializes in dacron for
Stars and Log Canoes and he was quite reasonable (in the price range of the
offshore folks). And, once again, we became competitive with the new sail.
The previous one lasted about six years and was getting tired, but it had
been raced about 20-30 times a year.

A friend of mine bought from them (the full set for a Hunter 34). The cost
is very competitive. But measure triple (double is not good enough). I also
heard that if they screw up, they would replace the sail (not necessarily
without some discussions, but they do).

Jon -- especially given your last name (!), I'd suggest you try Rolly Tasker
Sails in Thailand. They've given me a quote of $1400 delivered for a 135
headsail for my LF38; and their quality is supposed to be very high.

Re: Stus-List New beer can Genoa

2015-12-26 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
The boat w just bought came with a rally Tasker head sail.  Although the
material felt crisp the leech was complete shredded.
It came with a dacron sun cover and that was shredded,  the sail was shredded,
there were numerous repairs evident.  At guest I thought the all had been left
furled fur very long periods of time and that was happened to the edge.   Then
I noticed all the patches.
That is my only experience with rally tasker.  I ended up ordering a new sail
from precision sail loft.  So far the customer service has been good but,  I
haven't seen the all yet.   They gave me 3 quotes at different levels of sail
cloth (and build quality maybe).  I ended up going with the highest grade with
some extras.  The price is $3500 with shipping.
You have to pay the haggle game a little.   I ended up with a15 percent
discount by dragging my feet a little.   You know,  "I don't know,  I have to
think about it. .." type stuff.  A few phone calls later...  I won't see the
sail until March.   That was my call though because they allow a 3 payment plan
and I wanted to spread out the cost.  So a third at order,  a third two months
later and a third at shipping.
