Good to see another LF 35 owner on the list!

The Landfall 35 has teak capped toe rails, so we get the joy of varnishing
rather than paint, anodizing, or powdercoating.

I’m heading out to the boat tonight so I’ll take a peek at bolt access etc..

Is it possible that your GPS is set to show True heading, while the fluxgate

depending on where you are in PA.

I had to pull the one on my 37 two years ago. Hard part is reaching up
underneath to undo the nuts. I also had to use some heat to get the pulpit

Are you doing toe rails too?

using PHRF and I am the big boat in the fleet with a rating of 127, everyone
gets time. It has been a lot of fun over the years and the crew and I look

Re: Stus-List Wednesday Night racing

2016-07-11 Thread Sam Wheeler via CnC-List
I raced in a Wednesday fleet a few years ago but at this point Wednesday
has become my designated non-sailing day... My race schedule is Tuesday
and Thursday nights in Vanguard 15 dinghies (Tuesdays are team
racing), Friday nights on an Islander 36 in a PHRF spinnaker fleet, and
occasional weekends on a J/105, a Santa Cruz 50, and anyone else who will
take me. The V-15 is mine, the rest are OPBs.

I don't have any plans to seriously race my 35 since I live aboard and it's
not really set up to go fast, but I'm hoping at some point down the line to
enter it in something fun and casual with low expectations - probably once
I get it rigged to fly a spinnaker.

in flying sail, in 2000. Sailed both nights staring 2004, then bought
the boat in 2009. A couple of years ago the club offered a flying sail
start on Tuesdays which I race in. So spinnaker twice a week.

I've raced in the evening series on the Columbia since my early 20's. I am
74 now.
In 1998 I bought a Cal 20 with 2 long time sailing buddies and have raced
on Thursday evenings from spring through the summer in a fleet 10 to 15
Cals ever since.
In June I race my 44 in a Wednesday evening club series.

It was corroded wire that was the initial problem. Plenty of voltage there now.
And yes, a very old drive. I may need to send it to Canada for repair/refurb,

lot that can fail on them. This is an older Octopus drive, right? Maybe it
would be worth sending it to them for diagnosis and possible repair/refurb.
Also, have you checked voltage at the solenoid and drive leads while connected
to the drive? Maybe you have some corroded wire somewhere that’s causing a
voltage drop. You need to have good sized wire for the drive; not so large is
needed for the solenoid. I think we covered that in an earlier email off-list.

I agree with Josh, that is just iron deposited from an unfortunate incident.
Sand it off, and go to a grit you are happy with, and soak it with something
acidic to remove surface iron, a poor man's passivation. You can then
polish it if you like. I am sure it is fine.

I would try to sand/polish the plate clean and smooth before moving forward.
Work from 200 grit all the way up to 1000 or 2000 and then hand polish. You'll
be amazed at how much more you can tell about the area of concern. It could
just be a place where a steel cable deposited iron in the metal and that is
what is rusting. You see the same thing happen on SS cabels where they've been
cut or swaged.

As for machine shops I'm sure there is one closer to you in Annapolis but I
have a guy around the corner from me. I use him all the time. Does complete
one off design and repair. Harry Langley at "The Machine Shop" in Lusby MD.

Re: Stus-List Forestay Stem Fitting / Chainplate Replacement

2016-07-11 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I would try to sand/polish the plate clean and smooth before moving
forward. Work from 200 grit all the way up to 1000 or 2000 and then hand
polish. You'll be amazed at how much more you can tell about the area of
concern. It could just be a place where a steel cable deposited iron in
the metal and that is what is rusting. You see the same thing happen on SS
cabels where they've been cut or swaged.

As for machine shops I'm sure there is one closer to you in Annapolis but I
have a guy around the corner from me. I use him all the time. Does
complete one off design and repair. Harry Langley at "The Machine Shop" in
Lusby MD.

PM me for more info.

Re: Stus-List Wednesday Night racing

2016-07-11 Thread David via CnC-List
We raced round-the-bouys and Wednesday night for years on Corsair with my
teenage son and an additional crew of 6...(We often saw Zoomer's stern)

Once my son started doing his own thing, I realized I was spending a lot of
money and time, abusing my boat and was generally not having a good time
anymore on hyperactive 1 mile W/L courses. So I closed the Adult Day Camp.

So now its short-handed long distance racing with my son(s) when he/they can
make it.

Stus-List Forestay Stem Fitting / Chainplate Replacement

I came came back from a nice day of sailing in great winds and decent weather
(usual for Chesapeake in July) and was washing down the hull when I noticed

you have a machine shop in Annapolis area that you have used before (besides

Re: Stus-List Wednesday Night racing

2016-07-11 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
I’ve been Wednesday-Night racing for well over 20 years on City Island, in the
EBYRA series, which I was Commodore of for 13 years.

I started on the Enterprise-A (1978 C 34), then on the Enterprise-B (1990 C
37+). For the first year this year, I’m experiencing the joys and less hassles
of OPBs — I’m crewing on a Catalina 34TM. After week one, they made me
tactician and crew boss. I guess I know my stuff. Either that, or I have
everyone fooled.

I always enjoyed running my own boat wth my own crew, but I must say I’m very
surprised at how much I’m enjoying the crew position on someone else’s boat —
especially when I see lines fray, the whisker pole bend, and shackles that need
replacing. I can almost hear my American Express card sigh relief.

All the best,

Edd

Stus-List Vetus Bladder water tank

2016-07-11 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Further to last week's thread

Persistence has Vetus 14.5 gallon bladder under stbd settee And Vetus 26.5
gallon bladder in vee berth. When I fill the bladders are almost over inflated
with water to the point I cannot put the settee or vee berth support covers
back in place without draining a bit. Wondering if this is normal and if I
should be watching as they fill

On Saturday when filling both tanks there was a stream of water where the large
inlet hose attaches to the 26.5 gallon bladder. It looked as though the
bladder was taking a much needed pee. After running the water in galley for a
bit combined with the peeing from the bladder (and subsequent bilge pump) it
stopped leaking and seems to still have 18 - 20 gallons in the tank.

Has anyone encountered this and is there a fix? Am not sure if is a tear in
the bladder itself or a problem with the fitting where it attaches to bladder.
Would the "goop" solution proposed last week work? Other thoughts?

Mike

2016-07-11 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
I've been racing Wednesday nights at New Bedford YC since 2001. First on
Bill Dingwell's C DK named "Zoomer" doing foredeck. Raced my 25 Mk1 on
occasion, but had more fun and learned more on OPB (other peoples' boats).

The C 40 was retired and sold (as was my 25) so I moved to a Wednesday
night one design fleet, thus no longer racing on a C However, I'm still
racing on a boat with a guy named Rob Ball (an Etchells), so plenty of C
topics are discussed while sailing..

There are no plans to remove the dodger, bimini, and dinghy davits from the
Landfall to go buoy racing at this time...

Like Bill, we've been racing for many years, we race on the Ohio River, so we
get short courses and strange layouts, the real fun is when a fully loaded 1000
ft barge and towboat come through the middle of the fleet in mid-start!
