Re: Stus-List New Subject. Winch replacement for a C&C 38MKII

2016-08-27 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I got the power ratio numbers from the winch performance information for the
Grinder 40 on the Defender website.

I see that 1st & 2nd gears on the Trimmer are the same as 3rd & 4th on the
Grinder.

14 CM of line recovery per handle revolution in the fastest gear for the
Trimmer. One of the metric folks on the list help me… that’s, what, 5.5 inches?
And 1.4 CM in the lowest gear is about 6/10ths of an inch per revolution?

Max working load is 1870 pounds for both the Grinder & Trimmer. I wonder what
the sheet loads are on a 155 on a 38 mk2 in 15 knots of true wind? According to
the Harken calculator, for my 135 in 20 knots apparent (which is around 13 or
14 true) the sheet load is 969 pounds.

I am not sure where Rick got his numbers. I looked into this recently after an
elbow injury made me consider replacing my Baronet 28s. The Pontos Trimmer 4
speed ($1600) has a power ratio of 113 in its maximum power gear. If I replace
my winches at some point, that is what I am planning to use. Dave

Yes the Pontos 4 speed 40 is $1600. (Which, BTW is $300 more than a Lewmar
Ocean 40 and $600 more than a Lewmar EVO 40) And it gets line in fast. And it
shifts gears automatically at a comfortable 25 pounds on the winch handle. But…

The ultimate power ratio in the lowest gear is still a 40 – which means it has
the same power as the Barient 24 that came as the halyard winch on my 38. (And
that I have installed as primaries on my C&C25)

Ron, you indicated dissatisfaction with how hard it is to grind in your 155
with the current Barient 28’s. The current Barient 28’s have a power ratio of
52 – the same as the Pontos 52’s that sell at Defender for $3400 each.

What's her hull number Robert? The eBay listing says she's a 1972 boat.
With an Atomic 4 I assume?

Good looking boat :)

Re: Stus-List Anchor test - recommended lunch hook/kedge?

2016-08-27 Thread Rick Taillieu via CnC-List
The primary anchor on the 25 that I had was a 25lb CQR with 23ft of chain
and 150ft of rode and I never dragged when I had proper scope out.
My lunch hook was a 5kg Bruce that I hauled up from the bottom one day and
it held almost as well as the CQR.
Danforth/Fortress anchors work well in sand and mud but are useless in rock
and weeds.

Subject: Stus-List Anchor test - recommended lunch hook/kedge?

Interesting few hours today doing an anchor test. A young guy at port
Whitby marina was looking for an anchor for his tanzer 26, to replace the
really tiny and cheap ski-boat danforth type that came with his boat (and
had proved impossible to set). We had discussed over beverages a few times.

I thought to try my (never tried) fortress fx-7 lunch hook - 120' rode, 10'
chain. We dragged it all over the bay at 8:1 or better scope. Could feel
it bumping along a hard bottom. It finally hooked up and was kinda
sideways. Now the bottom is, I think, a rock shelf under silt and clay,
but I don't really know.
We parked his boat and returned with Windstar (my 33 mkii) and her 10kg
Bruce with 50' heavy chain. (Plus 150' rode) Let out the chain only,
dragged 20' and set hard. You could feel and hear it bumping over a very
hard bottom before it did so. Should have tried in 2 or 3 locations to
prove it was not a fluke. (So to speak)
He now wants a load of chain and a 10kg anchor for his 4000lb boat!
Lol
Anyway, the fortress isn't going to work for me. What do folks use and
trust as a lunch hook/kedge? As always, thanks.
Dave.

I'm not familiar with a rock dike.. did she get an operation?

Anyhow, a little qualification is in order, the 30-1 is the stiff
boat of the little fleet.

http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/technical/stability.htm

the 36 doesn't look particular stiff according to the chart.

Stus-List Possible upgrade to a C&C 36 cb

2016-08-27 Thread TOM VINCENT via CnC-List
This has been an interesting topic to follow for several days as I have owned
and raced a C&C 30 and now own and race a C&C 36 cb. I bought the 30' new in
1975 and raced her on the upper Chesapeake Bay in the Columbia Sailing Assoc.
(CSA). I had a 160 genoa, deck sweeper, and could carry it in breezes up to the
high teens. It was a hanked on sail, which was a pain to reduce to the 135. My
36' cb is more tender with a 150 and we need to reef the main or furl in the
genoa some (luff tape) when the wind goes in the mid teens. I can still out
point the fleet with the 150 and the center board is always up as I race on the
Bohemia River which is very shallow.
