Looks like a good “C” to me….

Rick — +1 on Edd’s suggestion of Handbrake. I’ve tweaked one of the presets,
and have used it to rip the 700+ movies and 1000+ TV shows I legally own, to
put them onto my ReadyNAS network storage; I use the Plex app to serve all of
them to various devices in my home (TV, Apple TV, etc.).

I’ve gotten the settings so that each full-length movie averages about 1GB, so
you could fit plenty of them on a 1TB drive. And I highly recommend Plex as a
great media server app.

Contact me off-line if you have any questions.

Re: Stus-List Storing videos while cruising

2016-12-21 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
You'll need a ripping program as Edd has described. This will get you a
pretty near copy of the DVD file system. Each dvd is either 4.5 or 9gb so
imagine how much space that would consume. Now imagine getting rid of the
stuff you don't want. FBI warnings, multiple languages, trailers,
alternative endings, alternative audio tracks, etc. The DVD files system
breaks the movie into 1gb files. Each file is typically about 30 minutes
of video. Depending on your media player software you may need to open
each file in sequence. Ugh!

What I suggest you do after ripping is convert and recompress with a
different software utility. When you're done you'll end up with a single
file that is just the movie. I have seen very watchable copies fit in
700mb so they could be stored on CDs. This was years ago before dvd
burners were available. A good goal would probably be 1gb for a 2 hour
movie.

I'd stick to ebooks and sailing myself.

2016-12-21 Thread Mitchell's via CnC-List
Rick, I have the same issues, you just have to figure out an appropriate
program to rip the files. I purchased a 1TB WD media player. It plays almost
any format file and large enough to hold pictures, video and music. I can take
it anywhere and use HDMI or RCA cord. It may even use WIFI. I don't know if
they are making a SSD drive but solid state will be faster to load and more
robust on a boat.

Sent from my mobile device.

Re: Stus-List Storing videos while cruising

2016-12-21 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Rick,

You’re going to need software that will “rip” the DVD onto a drive as well as
remove all of the copy protection and other tools that movie distribution
companies use to keep movie piracy to a minimum. If you were using a Mac, I
would recommend Handbrake or DVD Ripper Pro (I think there may be a Windows
version of DVD Ripper Pro too)

Note that you will be making a copy of copyrighted material. The last time I
looked, the law is unclear on this, but the general consensus is that you are
allowed to make an archive copy of a movie you own. Then again, you may not
actually own the movie, but a license to have a single copy — one of the
lawyers on the list may need to chime in.

This is in no way an admission of any kind that I do this. But, if anyone wants
to watch "STAR TREK Beyond" on board my boat at the next C Rendezvous, let me
know…. :)

Get a big drive. Each DVD movie will be several hundred MB. Blu-Ray movies will
be a few GB each. Chances are your laptop screen doesn’t have the resolution to
meet Blu-Ray standards, so you’ll probably be happy covering DVDs.

All the best,

Edd

Stus-List Storing videos while cruising

2016-12-21 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Happy Holidays to everyone!

There hasn't been much traffic on the list lately. I presume everyone is
occupied with holiday related activities. Now that I've sent presents to my
Grandchildren and mailed cards to friends and employees, I thought I'd ask a
question of the list. No rush getting an answer, because my response based
on your recommendations will probably fill a number of winter evenings.

In preparing Imzadi for cruising, I first thought that I would install a 12v
TV and a DVD player for entertainment. So when I had cabinets installed I
made room for the player and a stock of DVDs. I've since decided that TV
doesn't really interest me; and anyway I can watch all the news and movies I
want on my laptop. So instead of a TV, I installed a Leroy Niemen painting
called "Jour de Soleil" on the bulkhead where the TV was going to go.
http://www.mynewmaster.com/painting/Jour_du_Soleil_1689.html all that much

Anyway, to my question:

Over the years since I decided to include them in the cruising inventory
I've accumulated something like 700 DVDs. Way too many to take on the boat.
I've ripped all my music to a couple of IPods that can connect to the
stereo, and it dawned on me that I could probably dupe the DVDs to a few Gig
of portable hard drives and save space, weight, and the need to decide which
few of them I would take on the boat. That leads me to ask:

What would be the appropriate/best software to use to dupe my DVDs onto the
portable hard drives? And can anyone point me to instructions for doing
that, since I've never done it before?
