Re: Stus-List Anyone need/want a really big wheel?

2017-02-08 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Chuck brings up a good point to anyone wishing to acquire a cheap “big wheel”.
Most European wheels with a straight shaft will have a 25mm bore rather than
the 1” diameter on an Edson pedestal. The Edson hub also has a 2 3/8” depth
which allows the wheel nut to secure the wheel on the shaft. Shorter hubs will
require that you make a spacer to take up the extra room. Not only is the bore
a factor, but most newer steering wheels are built with a bit of “dish” to
allow them additional strength at the rim. As such, you may find with a new
Edson or Lewmar performance wheel that the rim will set further aft than your
current wheel, meaning a slight loss of foot room behind the helm.

And it is always a good idea to make a “trial wheel” from cardboard, mount it
on your pedestal and then make sure you can open all the lazarettes and lockers
in the cockpit without first needing to take off the wheel. Not as much of an
issue with “T” cockpits, but older boats will be limited.

than 1/16 too small for my Edson 1" shaft and had wheel reamed at a local
machine shop (as suggested here) to fit. Went from a 36" to 44" wheel on my
35-3.

Now the point: Absolutely best move...other than looking "correct" to my eye,
I agree with everyone here about the functional upgrade. Sailing is much
easier and more options to sit (I also removed the camel-hump). Girlfriend
would rather have the room afforded by the old wheel...so I really like your
link to the Edson rail-mounted storage clamp. Thanks.

Stus-List Anyone need/want a really big wheel?

2017-02-08 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
Let's make it unanimous...keep it. The large wheel is great and
there are few good spots to sit when under sail other than the
rail. And the large wheel makes that work. Small one would
[probably just not work.

As far as getting around it, you get used to that. When I am at a
dock for more than an over night, I pull the wheel and just set it in
the trough adjacent to the non dockside lazarette and use a small
bungie to secure it to the lifeline. I also keep a little plastic
clamp at the helm and use it to secure the key on the wheel shaft. I
picked up some square stock and made a few extra keys just in case
one jumped overboard. I also picked up an Edson quick release wheel
nut
(http://www.edsonmarine.com/marinestore/index.php?main_page=product_info_id=450)
to make undoing it easier.

So just like when you were a kid, you gotta have a Big Wheel!

Bruce,

Could not agree more with Ken and Josh ? give it a chance ? you?ll
LOVE the big wheel. You?ll find it?s very easy to drive the boat
from both the rail and the helm seat and, as Josh mentioned, we are
now used to stepping up and around to get behind it. And you can
always get that Edson mount thingy to put it aside for long days at
a dock, mooring or using the swim ladder.

And, as Ken said, you should sail with it for a while, especially in
anything over 15 knots. Some pics:

I love the 60 inch wheel, but its too big for movement in the cockpit area; an

Bruce,

Could not agree more with Ken and Josh — give it a chance — you’ll LOVE the big
wheel. You’ll find it’s very easy to drive the boat from both the rail and the
helm seat and, as Josh mentioned, we are now used to stepping up and around to
get behind it. And you can always get that Edson mount thingy to put it aside
for long days at a dock, mooring or using the swim ladder.

And, as Ken said, you should sail with it for a while, especially in anything
over 15 knots. Some pics:

size, that ship already sailed with the size of the boat . . . .

Re: Stus-List Battery test

2017-02-08 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
We were usually testing really big banks. You are correct a lower rate will be
more accurate for smaller batteries.
This is just a very rough test anyway, there are sophisticated conductance
meters and meters that keep track of amp-hours used that are better. If you use
what should be half the capacity and the battery ends up dead, you know it is
beat.

Joe;

Not to be argumentative, but the Amp Hour rating for a battery is by definition
based on the current the battery will provide that results in it being fully
discharged over 20 hours. For a typical 12 volt group 27 or 31 battery in the
100 AH range, that's about 5 amps of current. For a 4D or 8D you might be in
the in the 10A range. For a set of 4 GC5 golf cart batteries wired to be a 12v
bank at 480AH, maybe 24A.

Deep cycle batteries typically have the AH rating on the label. So you could
take the total of the AH ratings for the bank you want to test (My house bank
happens to be 4x115=460AH when new. ) divide by 20 and get the current flow
that you want to use as to measure your AH capacity. Then discharge the battery
to 50% as you suggest (about 10 hours, give or take a bit) and you can
calculate the AH capacity you have.

Regarding your suggestion to use a 20A discharge rate, by definition the
Reserve Capacity of a battery is the number of minutes that a battery will
deliver 25 amps of current before being fully discharged. That's because a
typical automobile uses about 25A of current to run the ignition, lights,
wipers, and other essential systems (not the air conditioner, GPS, or stereo).
The reserve Capacity is intended to tell you how long you have to get to the
mechanic after you have a failed alternator or a broken alternator belt. A
typical BCI 27 automotive battery with about 100AH rating would typically have
something like 160 minutes reserve capacity. 25Ax2.67hr=66.75AH - far less than
the AH rating of the battery because of Peukert's Law and the impact of
discharging at the higher rate. AmpHour capacity and Reserve Capacity are not
the same thing

The real AH capacity of a battery bank decreases over time; with each
discharge/charge cycle of the battery the capacity decreases slightly. I
already indicated in a earlier post that my house bank (460AH when installed in
2010) is down to about 400AH based on the information from my LinkLite.

Len, you indicated that your boat already has a Link battery monitor. If you
fully charge the battery, "synchronize" the monitor, open the circuit from the
solar panels to take them out of the system, and then wait a few hours you can
get the information needed to calculate the total AH capacity of the bank when
you "synchronized" the meter. You just need the total for amp hours used and
the percentage of capacity remaining to do the arithmetic.

I wonder why you are looking for another method?

Easy cheap way.
If you have accurate volt and amp meters, a 20 amp (or near enough) load
applied for enough time to drain the batteries 50%*. You should see 12.2 for
wet cells and 12.3 or so for gel/agm.
Light loads like 1-5 amps and heavy loads like 50-100 amps both will be
inaccurate because of Peukert's law. This law deals with the fact that a 100
AH battery can supply 100 amps for 1 hour or 1 amp for 100 hours in theory, but
in practice 1 amp will last longer than 100 hours and 100 amps won't make the
full hour. 20 amps is a good value for these tests.

* (AH capacity of batteries/load in amps) /2 = time in hours for 50% discharge

Bruce,
It may be wise to measure the diameter before posting. The largest size wheel
that fits a standard height Edson pedestal is 54" without having a wheel well
cut into the deck. Even then, clearances are tight at the pedestal base. Also
mention if the wheel has a straight or tapered bore for the wheel shaft.
Finally take into account that wheels that large will cost well upwards of $100
to ship anywhere in North America.
Regardless, put it up on Boatlist.org. I put two items on there this week and
one has already sold.

wheel makes this easy: https://goo.gl/photos/Mos5S7mgELRdbthb9

We take ours off at anchor and store it against the lifelines:

Hold on the that wheel! You may find that you like it better than the small
one. My boat came with 2 wheels from the PO as well. I love the bigger wheel
since it makes steering with my feet and steering from the rails very easy. I
also like to straddle the hump and stand on the aft benches to get a clearer
view of the road. I wouldn't be able to reach the wheel comfortably if it was
smaller. I can also stand in front of the pedestal and reach back over the
pedestal to comfortably reach the wheel allowing me to trim the main or head
sails. Particularly when singlehanding the AP is low on the port side and
accessible from in front or behind the wheel but taking or giving control from
in front is much easier when you can reach the wheel unencumbered. It is a
challenge to get around the wheel. While underway we just step up on the
port/stbd hatches. When not underway we remove the wheel and stowing it on a
mount designed by edson specifically for storing the wheel on a pushpit rail.

Re: Stus-List Anyone need/want a really big wheel?

2017-02-08 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
I'll second Josh,

We have a very large diameter wheel on our 37/40 and it is perfect for
steering from the rail. I'd try it for a while under sail before I got rid
of it if I were you.

Just wondering if anyone has or knows of someone that would like to sell their

Thank you!
