Re: Stus-List Bottom Painting -- Anyone Spray?

2017-02-23 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
The guy that does Touche's bottom paint always sprays it. I use Balto
Plate. He also sprayed on some barrier coat a few years ago.

He does excellent work. All he does is bottom work and topside painting.

Re: Stus-List Wind Turbine / Generators

2017-02-23 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Edd;

This is the current version of what used to be known as Air-X. The Air-X is
probably the most common one I see on boats traveling the ICW that stop at the
marina I manage. Almost everyone seems happy with them. Based on the
recommendations from owners I bought an Air-X but have not gotten it installed
on Imzadi yet. Probably a project for after I get back from Bermuda, and before
I go cruising.

The second most common one I see on cruising boats is probably a KISS wind
generator.

The Air-X was very quiet. Includes I built in MPPT controller. As the batteries
are charged (or in high winds, like 60MPH) the internal software slows or stops
the rotation of the blades. There is an installation kit that includes wiring,
fuses, and a “stop” switch that lets you shut down rotation if you open the
charge circuit.

Downside is that it doesn’t produce significant current in winds under 8 knots.
There used to be another Air-X model that produced current at lower speeds, and
that might be more appropriate for conditions in the Chesapeake. My general
opinion is that a wind generator is best if you are going to the Bahamas or
Caribbean, and solar is likely a better option in light air areas like
Chesapeake Bay and coastal North Carolina. For cruising up and down the coast –
which is what I plan- some combination of the two seems desirable.

I installed a 450 MarineKinetix in Annapolis on my way south in 2014. Install
was simple. I mounted it on a poll I purchased from e-marine. It's aluminum
and they coat the inside to reduce vibration and noise. I love it when the
wind is blowing 15+ kts. I chose this one because I saw one on Cruising
Solution's boat in Shelbourne NS. Every time I went by in the dinghy I would
stop and listen to see how noisy it was. It was very quiet. Also I thought the
pricing was good.

I don't believe all the hype from all the manufactures about performance.

YMMV

Re: Stus-List Wind Turbine / Generators

2017-02-23 Thread Petar Horvatic via CnC-List
Not all windgens are created equal. I’ve had guests sitting in the cockpit in
20kt breeze and with bimini above they had no clue my blades were spinning. I
was told they could spin 200mph+ in a breeze. My windgen is mounted on an
1-1/4” aluminum pole, starboard-aft of the cockpit. Blades come down to about
6” above the bimini. I agree some windgenerators are annoying as hell. I
installed Fourwinds II in 2004. very quiet and powerful. Not for everyone and
no longer available new. In ‘06 I was on Cruisers net in Abacos, and heard
that an owner had lost an arm trying to swing the blades away from the wind as
squall was approaching. New ones now-days consist of light blades that would
not do any damage in an accident. But also tend to be louder.

There is a an old photo of it

Edd,

Your use of “pull the trigger” is ironic, since it is what I want to do any
time a person with a wind generator picks up a mooring or anchors anywhere
within ear shot of my boat. Well maybe not quite that severe, but there are
few sounds more annoying to me than a wind generator buzzing all night long
when I’m trying to enjoy a quiet anchorage. When solar power is becoming so
inexpensive and reliable, why resort to a mechanical alternative that adds
windage, complexity, and detracts from the lovely lines of your C&C?

But there are a number of satisfactory mounting systems now available from
SeaView and Edson should you venture in that direction…

Re: Stus-List Bottom Painting -- Anyone Spray?

2017-02-23 Thread Gary Nylander via CnC-List
My friend who finished second overall and first in class at last year's
Newport to Bermuda race sprayed his bottom (Cal 40). Used a number of thin
coats of some expensive new paint. We have also sprayed Balto-plate. I think
Vivid may work with a sprayer, as it is rather thin. Talk to the vendors.

In all cases, masking is critical and tenting everything is mandatory - on
the Balto-plate, it was out in a field, and we built a shelter. The new
stuff was applied in a tent.

Not a good idea. Bottom paint should be thinned as little as possible and
never by more than 10%. Too much thinner changes the structure of the paint
when it dries and cures, which is critical to how it works. Not thinning it
at all is optimum, but most thin it SLIGHTLY to make it easier to roll on.

would create a lot of time cleaning up between coats, and will take several

When wiring my 33, I did 5 circuits (battery charger, galley, port side,
starboard side and left one for a future water heater) and I used GFCI
outlets on the first in each of the 4 branches with outlets(3). Sometimes
it just does not matter what is reacquired, it is what is best. Do remember
that you only need one on the circuit and if you buy a bulk pack they are
not expensive. No need for a "marine" product here, though I did pay extra
for the ones marked "WR" for water resistant, though not sure it really
makes a difference. I just figured there is a lot of water around the boat
so it could not hurt.

Stus-List Bottom Painting -- Anyone Spray?

2017-02-23 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Listers,

I’m considering the idea of spray-painting my bottom paint this season with my
usual Petit Vivid bottom paint (I know a thinner is needed to apply).

Has anyone done this? I’m looking to see some time and energy, but am concerned
about wasting paint, accidentally painting the topsides, or painting someone
else’s boat or nearby car.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. It’s 67 degrees in New
York right now and I’m getting the itch.

All the best,

Edd

Stus-List Wind Turbine / Generators

2017-02-23 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Listers,

After watching the Brown family on Alaskan Bush People last night install a
wind turbine to power their part of the island, I got to thinking (usually a
very dangerous and costly thing to do) and found this on Defender:
http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?path=-1|328|2290063|2290064&id=2188348

So — has anyone installed a wind turbine/generator on their C&C? Pros? Cons?
How did you mount it? Any photos of your mounts would be appreciated in case I
pull the trigger.

All the best,

Edd
