Re: Stus-List Baby stay vs Cunningham?

2017-05-17 Thread Jake Brodersen via CnC-List
Dave,

The controls are not really redundant. The cunningham does a much better
job of flattening the main. The cunningham tightens the luff in the bottom
third of the sail very effectively.

The babystay can shape the main a little, but it mainly used to prevent the
mast from pumping. The thick mast section on most C is really difficult
to bend. Preventing the mast from pumping (or inverting) is much more
important. That said, we only use ours in heavy air or when the waves are
large. The #3 tacks around it pretty easy, the #1... not so much.

They both help to flatten the main in heavy wind but they do it
differently. Kinda like saying, "Since I have a belt I don't need

Re: Stus-List antifreeze weterbeke diesel 44B four

2017-05-17 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
The cavitation problem is not uncommon, and not limited to diesels, but in my
experience it is pretty specific to particular engine designs.

On Hyster and Yale fork lifts in the late 80’s and early 90’s we had very high
warranty costs for erosion in the cylinder heads on the 4-cylinder GM gas
engines, 4-cylinder Mitsubishi gas engines, and 40-50 HP Yanmar diesels used in
our smaller capacity models. The clue to finding the fix was that the pinhole
leaks that developed in the Mitsubishi engine were always next to the exhaust
valve for the #2 cylinder (we didn’t use that many of the GM or Yanmar
engines), appeared between 2000 and 3000 hours of operation, and the problem
seemed to be exacerbated by the use of high phosphate coolant. Mitsubishi (and
Yanmar) modified the head casting to put a bit more metal in the problem area
which changed the harmonic that caused the cavitation. And we sent out a
bulletin to dealers and customers telling them to not use certain brands of
coolant. I remember that the folks who make Peak pitched a big bitch and
threatened to sue over the service bulletin.

To this day I don’t use Peak in my car, jeep, or boats.

Amsoil has convincing marketing regarding their antifreeze. Its
propyleneglycol to start with so... safer for pets, children, and the
environment. If any even made it to your bilge you might sleep easier. Amsoil
also introduced me to a phenomenon in water jacket diesel engines where by the
diesel combustion actually causes ultrasonic cavitation in the coolant. This
internal engine cavitation causes metal pitting which eventually erodes through
the engine internals. Is you engine susceptible? Who knows. Is this really a
common problem? Again, who knows. It does give me a little peace of mind to
know that they have identified the problem and have addressed it with the
formulation of their product...for whatever that is worth.

In full disclosure I paid the $30 "dealer" (read: discount club) fee. I
can get you any of their products at about 30% off and shipped to your

when you go buying these toggles, make sure that you select the right size.
They come in different length. It might be prudent to buy them in pairs. Guess
how I know.

Mike and Pete get the points for this one if we are keeping score. I had to
replace one turnbuckle (fell in the river while trying to attach with the
threads at max) and I missed the fact that there was supposed to be a toggle on
the end. That extra 3” might be the difference. I am not sure it will give me
enough to make attachment easy, but it will certainly help. I will report back
when I have installed the toggles. Dave

Stus-List Deck organizer alternative?

2017-05-17 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Probing around the Web looking to answer Dave's question popped up an
interesting alternative to retrofiting deck organizers. If you can't match
the fastener spacing, you have to fill the holes, drill new ones and buy
new organizers (or have Guido make you some).

Nautos makes their organizers differently. From reading their description,
apparently you fasten a base plate to the deck then attach the sheave/cover
assembly to the base plate. Couldn't figure exactly how the base plate
fastens to the deck. Couldn't find an exploded view.

Anybody seen these in person? How do they work?
