Stus-List Separation between engine

2017-06-08 Thread Adam Hayden via CnC-List
A few of you have mention that you have netting to separate the engine and
lazerette. Does the engine need the airflow from the lazerette for cooling?
The engines are usually raw water or fresh water cooled as opposed to air
cooled. I was just curious? I have a 36 and have had a few items fall onto
the shaft and like others mentioned burned a bit of plastic. Fortunately
lines are on the outboard side away from the engine area. It is one of those
things I would like to do as well, but have more pressing projects.

Re: Stus-List Hydraulic Hoses - C 37+

2017-06-08 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I used Lew Townsend last year at the recommendation of the list. He's a
Navteq authorized technician. As described by him Navteq was sending all
of their needs to him. Because of the time sensitive nature I found a
local hydraulics shop to re-head one of my hoses. They didn't have the
stainless fitting so as a temporary fix I agreed for them to do it with
their "standard" fitting on my old hose. It cost ~$10. Once I had the
measurements I could send the gland (the part that allows the hose to pass
through the transom) to Lew. He sent back the correct length and properly
terminated hose with the gland captured. I installed this hose and then
swapped the temporary hose to the other side. This allowed me to send the
other hose and gland to Lew so he could make a new hose for the second side
- with the second captured gland. While he had the glands I just ran
without and accepted that a bit of rain water might enter.

Lew rebuilt my hydraulic pump too and in short order. He did a pressure
test and a holding test and replaced the pressure gauge. He also sent a
return line filter which I didn't realize was missing. In trying to find
the correct hydraulic fluid I realized that the typical marine hydraulic
fluids were not the "correct" viscosity. ISO 32 hydraulic fluid is called
for by Navteq IIRC. After a good amount of research and talking to Navteq,
Lew, and Amsoil, I chose an appropriate viscosity synthetic hydraulic fluid
from amsoil. Amsoil Power Steering fluid happens to be ISO 32. All of
Lew's work came to a total of $823. A little pricey but I knew it was done
right and with the correct parts. Now I have a spare hose to get me
through next time too.

Lew and I discussed rebuilding the hydraulic pistons since they have been
weeping for the entire duration of my ownership. I decided to wait until
the off season and then it simply never happened. It will, and Lew is who
I will get to do it.

So far so good.
