Re: Stus-List Original Rig, (was US Watercraft receivership)

2017-07-25 Thread RANDY via CnC-List
Grenadine's rig and deck hardware is all-original, old-school. No furler, lazy
jacks, self-tailing winches, rope clutches. My crew has to grind and tail and
cleat to horn cleats, and flake sails manually. For two years they didn't know
any better because they're newbies :) But one of them jumped on a shorthanded
competitor's boat the other week and came back jealous of his furler and
self-tailing winches. In defense I had to explain how much it would cost to
upgrade :) I'd rather spend the money on new sails. While I can appreciate the
merits of all those conveniences especially for leisure sailing, for racing I
like being able to make a last-minute headsail choice right before leaving the
dock, or even changing the headsail on the fly.

Cheers,

And my wife and I can be off the mooring and sailing in minutes. Put-away is

Hillerange stove thermostat
Hello all

I'm looking for a thermostat for a Hillerange oven.  It is on our 1981 C 34
and it is the brown three burner, model number is 3121 and is also known as the
Seaward Princess (I think).  The thermostat is part number 70400.  We cannot
get our current one rebuilt in Seattle because our current one is for natural
gas not propane and that is the problem.  Someone must have replaced it with
the wrong one at some point and it has never worked since I have owned the
boat.  The pilot light will not stay lit.

If anyone happens to have a functioning one on a stove that is not longer used
I would be interested.

Thanks

Drill a hole in the bung till the drill bit contacts the screw that's
beneath the bung. Then screw in a sheet metal screw. When the sheet metal
screw contacts the screw that's under the bung, continue to screw it in,
and the bung will slide out.

We had the same problem when we got our 34 19 years ago - keeping the pilot

Re: Stus-List Removing wood bungs

2017-07-25 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
If the wood is varnished, you should cut through the varnish first.
Otherwise, you may pull up splinters from the wood adjoining the bung.

Go to Harbor Freight. Buy a cheap set of Forstner drill bits ($10).
Carefully center the correct size bit in the bung. Rotate a few times
around the bung to cut the varnish.

Even if the piece isn't varnished, it's still a good idea to cut around the
bung.

Drill a hole in the center of the bung 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the bung.
Insert a woodscrew until it contacts the fastener. Carefully rotate the
screw a bit more. If you're lucky, the bung will ride up the screw. It
may just crumble to pieces. Pick out the pieces with an awl or knife tip.

like to invite you to attend our 2017 C Northeast Rendezvous; September 8-10,

drinks?

We have dock space reserved at Mitchell Park Marina, located within a four-acre

There are already seven C’s scheduled to attend — and there’s plenty of room
for more to join in on what’s shaping up to be our best Northeast Rendezvous

Most water pumps can be rebuilt.  I would guess that all you need is a new
seal.  Surely any good mechanic could replace it if they have the right
equipment.

It’s leaking and Yanmar wants $549 for an official Yanmar replacement!

Are there reasonable alternatives?

I was able to replace the after-market raw water pump on my 3QM30 with a direct
Jabsco replacement several years ago. Still about $175.00, but much better
than $549.00...

Re: Stus-List US Watercraft receivership

2017-07-25 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
I had a hard time thinking of the “new” C as related to “real” C in any
way except the logo, but then they went and changed that too.
I used to think sailors got tired of sailing and bought trawlers, but an
informal look around shows the end destination of sailors seems to be a nice
center console fishing boat. I can kind of see it too, no systems really, the
engine winterizes itself every time you tilt it up, and it fits into any random
time slot. Hard to convince a modern scheduled to death family to carve out the
time needed to own and use a sailboat. You too can take a week off work that
just happens to coincide with a Bermuda high and you’ll never touch the sails,
but you will combine heat, humidity, AND bugs!

Dennis..it's the old adage..if you don't learn from historyyou're
destined to repeat it.
My own opinion is that sailing has become a diminishing interest.while
power boats are enjoying a growth market.
It's the immediate gratification generation..just turn the key and drive
away.
It's not the lack of money...except for special circumstances.e.g.
Comanche, Meteor, etc..the money is going into power.
Check out the MJM 50 e.g. big engines, gyroscopic stabilization and a $2.5 M
pricetag.
And the waiting list is over 3 years long..MJM produces at least 2 boats
per week.from 35' to 50'...the least expensive is in the $900K
range.
Makes me really like my C even more

Re: Stus-List US Watercraft receivership

2017-07-25 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
It is also aging population

The great thing about sailing vs powerboating is that everyone on board is
involved in sailing whereas powerboat is like sitting on the beach. Boring (if
you are not the driver). Sailing can be a lot of work and racing needs an
active crew. Powerboat you are less dependent on other people to take your
boat out for the day.

My last boat will hopefully be something like a Mainship. It will be flag blue.

Sabre also made that realization.

Even the major sailboat manufacturers are making sailboats that have more and
more the attributes of powerboats ….

Interesting …
