Re: Stus-List Choice of sealant for these jobs?

2018-04-20 Thread TL ROSS via CnC-List
Thanks for your responses!
Dennis - yes it’s the coaming I’m talking about - didn’t have the right words -
ok I will look into using captain tolleys. I’m going to be using that anyway to
seal up some leaks around the tie rail. My dad suggested Life Sealant.
Bruce - re the butyl, it was squeezed out between the cast aluminum and the
wood coaming, and when it is hot it would just ooze and stick to people,
clothes, sails, etc. And then there was the leaky corners. Both may have been a
problem of improper installation by me the decade ago when I first did it or
using a tape that was too wide to start with. I’ve now been recommended Life
Sealant for this purpose too which sounds like a good bet if I can get it all
cleaned up and off first. Thanks for the tip on the other stuff too!

Hi!
What sealant would you choose for these two jobs ?
1 shoring up the seal between the wood frame and the deck on us front hatch ? I
can’t get the wood frame off so I’m just going to have to take off the extra
old sealant stuff off that I can and try to make a good new seal around the
outside.
2. Sealing the cast aluminum hatch to the wood frame - butyl is no good!

I use this prescription.

https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B8pEh5lnvP1yRHJmRThKbl9aN0U

I polish with a rotary buffer and finesse-it then hand wax with collonite
fleet wax. The key I learned (maybe re-learned) is that the wax has a
tendency to dry out and you need to punch through to the bottom to get the
juicy wax. That wax goes on smooth and even. It dusts off pretty easily
too with a microfiber cloth.

One thing I also learned this year is that if your wax dries out too much
it can be reconstituted with naphtha thinner...or zippo lighter fluid.

I was told that marine wax typically has some abrasive quality.   If your
finish outs still very smooth I would think a really good car wax would be all
you need as they wouldn't have any abrasives in them.

Stus-List Wax

2018-04-20 Thread Andrew Burton via CnC-List
Ok, assembled wisdom, what is the best wax to keep my gel coat shiny all
summer? Peregrine was awl gripped so just used Awl Care, but I'm not sure that
would work for gel coat.

Re: Stus-List Choice of sealant for these jobs?

2018-04-20 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Not sure exactly what your issue is. I think you are talking about the
wood coaming between the hatch and deck. If you are not going to remove
the hatch and you want to seal it in place, I'd try some Captain Tolley's
Creeping Crack Cure. It's a thin liquid which gets sucked into cracks and
small gaps then dries to a flexible seal. Run several beads around the
wood/deck interface. You can do about one bead per hour.

Re: Stus-List Choice of sealant for these jobs?

2018-04-20 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Hello,
Interestingly, we have teak decking in the cockpit on our 1994 C 37/40+.
When we had it refinished (including re-caulking), the guy who did it used SIS
440.  More info can be found here:

I'm surprised that the butyl rubber is not working for the hatch/frame point.
What is happening specifically, and what type of butyl tape are you using?
Have you tried Bed-It Butyl Tape (by far the best in my experience).
Best of luck,

C Mk 1.
Thanks!
