Re: Stus-List How many shaft zincs?

2018-04-27 Thread Don Wagner via CnC-List
The acceleration of the zinc corrosion can be due to a number of things. The
galvanic isolator can help if the marina has a grounding issue, and will fix
that. Your problem is more likely due to dissimilar metals on your boat
immersed in salt water.
Many years ago I had a C 30 Mk I, and after 4-5 years of use, it started
consuming several zincs in a season. I purchased a corrosion meter, made dozens
of measurements, and realized it was due to the existence of the lead keel in
combination with the lightning ground.
At the end of the season, I had her hauled, stripped the keel paint, and
barrier coat, replaced the barrier coat, the anti-fouling paint and never had
another problem. If you think about it, a battery often is made of lead in
combination with an electrolyte (eg, salt water) and other metals. By
electrically connecting the lead keel and mast to the engine, shaft, zincs,
thru hulls, etc, you have created a short-circuited battery, and accelerating
the corrosion or the least noble of the metals—in this case the zinc. I was
able to isolate the connections, and measure the open circuit voltage and the
currents when shorted. Sure enough, the voltage was ~ 0. 5, and the current was
~ 100 ma. Not very much, but enough to eat away a zinc on 27/7 basis. My
conclusion was that the barrier coat had isolated the keel for the early years,
but after a while, it broke down, and exposed more lead to the sea thereby
increasing the zinc cunsumption.
It worked for me, and you might want to investigate.

I have always installed two [2] shaft zincs, at the beginning of sailing season.

For last two seasons, I've seen their deterioration accelerate in my marina,
despite having a galvanic isolator on board.

I know I need to find the stray current source. That said, any thoughts on
adding a third zinc as a measure of "insurance"?

Re: Stus-List Engine Temp Gauge Not Working

2018-04-27 Thread Jack Brennan via CnC-List
I‘m assuming the 3GMD is similar to my 2GM20. If that’s the case, the reason is
that the buzzer and the temperature gauge require different sensors screwed
into the engine.

I replaced the buzzer sensor wit the temperature sensor because I’d rather use
the gauge. I thought about using a Y-shaped pipe to use both, but never got
around to it.

You should be able to source the correct sensor locally. If you can’t, there’s
a place called Lauderdale Speedometer in Fort Lauderdale, Fl., that has what
you need.

Subject: Stus-List Engine Temp Gauge Not Working

I bought a 1981 34' with a 3GMD engine a few years ago. The temp warning buzzer
works but the gauge has never worked, although it is in place and wired.

The Yanmar manual has a section on testing the buzzer sender unit, but I don't
see anything about the location of the sender unit for the gauge or how to test
it.

Looking for any advice on how to approach diagnosing the problem. Is it the
same sender unit for both the buzzer and gauge? I haven't spent the time trying
to trace all the wiring but was hoping to find something in the manual first
about how the gauge is wired.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Matt,

That's going to be tough. My rigger buddy and I faced this situation a couple

You could call a bunch of rigging shops but my guess is you'll come up empty.
The best rigging shop on the Gulf Coast is Zern Rigging. Call Rick at
850-439-1453. Touche' is docked near Rick's shop. If you find one there I can
try to get it to you.

If some other listers post the contact info for good rigging shops in their

Thread creep – we once laid out floating MOB strobes in a path from the marina

Bill;

Rule 20 (both inshore and international) forbids displaying a light that could
be confused with a light that is specified by the rules. So a strobe light that
is white, blue, or yellow that flashes at 120 pulses per minute or more, or a
yellow one flashing slowly, would not be legal. All these variants are
specified nav lights for stuff like law enforcement, barges, tow vessels,
seaplanes, WIGs or submarines.

Rule 36 in the international rules says you can make any light signal that
cannot be confused with a navigation light, nor “embarrasses” another vessel,
if you need to attract the attention of another vessel. But the rule prohibits
the use of high intensity revolving lights or strobes.

Rule 36 on the inshore rules allows you to make any light signal to attract
attention (with the same restrictions as international), but does not have the
prohibition for revolving lights and strobes.

So if you are using your boat inside the Colregs line in US waters, a red or
green strobe would be OK. If you are in Canada or outside the Colregs line in
the US, No.

Someone else said the strobe would be a distress signal. Not So. It is not on
the list of distress signals listed in the Colregs. There is a flashing light
that the USCG has approved as a distress signal, but it flashes SOS in Morse
code. There are also a range of spotlights that have an SOS flash mode, which
would be legal under rules 20 and 36 since they cannot be confused with a
navigation light. I do not believe that the flashing distress signal has been
approved under SOLAS, so it might be questionable in international waters but
you could make a case for it under rule 36.

And, of course, you could base your argument for using a strobe under rule 2,
which requires you to do everything possible to avoid a collision… including
violate the other rules of the Colregs.

Bottom line is that in most cases the strobe isn’t strictly legal, but I doubt
that the USCG would write you a ticket or fail you on a safety inspection if
you have one on the boat and don’t turn it on.
