I wonder how long it will take Eglin AFB to clear the aircraft. Between the 33
rd Fighter wing, the Armaments Directorate and the climatic lab, they have just
about one of every aircraft flying. I spent a lot of time there in the early
80's (Building 999).

Hopefully everybody makes out well (aircraft and boats). This one is going to
hit pretty hard and move fast. May bring us some snow up here by early next
week.

which means that we will be side tied to the break wall. I'll be there
probably Thursday through Monday and if you decided that you want to side
tie to me for a few hours on one or two of the days I wouldn't have a
problem with that.

One of the nice things about a rendezvous, besides meeting people, is
getting to see each other's boats. We'll be giving tours, demonstrations,

Are you talking about the front piece photo on page 54 of the October issue
about the Bas d'Or Lake in Nova Scotia?

The boat appears to be a 30-1, sail number 242, if anyone on here knows the
owner. But the name on the transom is pretty much unreadable in the photo.

A 29-1 had two portlights in the cabin side, and the early 27s had a different
arrangement of shrouds than the boat in the photo. I'm not sure if any of the
larger boats in the 70s came with a tiller instead of a wheel, so I'm pretty
sure the boat in the photo is a 30. The caption of the photo only identifies
the boat as a "little sloop".

Re: Stus-List New Genoa?

2018-10-08 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Edd,I used precision sails.  They have a sail loft in Canada but do overseas
sails.   You do the measurements for them.  Pretty easy to do.  I probably
spoke to them half a dozen times.  They double checked all the measurements
with the use of a photograph you take.  It all went really well.   They offer 3
lines of sail,  a 300, 400 and 500.  I went all out with the highest grade and
added all the bells and whistles.  I believe it ended up at $3600  the lowest
priced sail I think was $1400.  Right in line with Rolly tasker.
This year I got pricing on a new main sail.  One from Thurston sails, the local
quantum loft.  They do great work.   They wanted like $4200. I also got a price
from Neil pryde in CT. They were $2400 for apples to apples.  Of course they
made the existing sail and still had the info so the was no designing involved.
Really nice guy too.  I finally just met him face to face here in Annapolis.
He ended up repairing my existing sail for like $500.
You always get good prices from boat show discounts.   Usually 15% from local
lofts.  I did that for the viking 33 and used Thurston for both head and main.
They were midway between Rolly and usual local loft prices after the boat show
discount.
There are also used offerings.   Porpoise sails comes to mind.  You just have
to match dimensions as best you can.  I used them on my first boat an O'day 22.
I got a used head and be main.  The used sail was in amazing shape.  I have a
recent email from another used dealer I'll try and pull up and send over when I
get in front of a computer.

Thanks, Danny

Edd,

When you get the sail, consider not using Sunbrella for the UV sun cover, but a
sacrificial strip of the sail cloth. I have it on my second jib and in both
cases it worked great. The first one lasted 10 years (and I sold
the boat) and this one is on the 5 year and is not showing any signs of
deterioration. The only issue might be that it would be white and not colour
coordinated with the rest of your boat.

But the sail flies much better. The Sunbrella cover is quite heavy and in
lighter air it weighs the sail down.

As for the source, I heard a lot of good things about Rolly Tasker. However, in
the absence of a local sail loft here, I went with the second best - a small
sail loft where you can talk to the sail maker on the phone.
I used Somerset Sails in NY (they are outside of Buffalo, kind of, across the
Lake from us).

Their quality is quite good, you can talk to the sailmaker and discuss all
potential options. The sail is completely custom made, so you don’t need to
take any compromise. Not to mention that their prices are VERY competitive.

In any event, it is worth its while to do some serious shopping around. You
will be surprised how different lofts are priced. Also, especially, if you are
planning to order form away, triple measure the sails (actually,
your boat). The actual dimensions have very little in common with what is
published and with what the sailmakers have in their files (e.g. my new Main is
almost a foot longer in the luff).

Good luck with your search

stripes, sun cover on the leech and foot, and sail numbers.

Given that I don’t race the Enterprise any more, I don’t need any super
laminates, but I’d like something not too heavy. Really just something that
will get me where I need to go, be it a daysail, an overnighter or a C
Rendezvous.

And, oh yeah, no bank breaking.

Any recommendations? Are those overseas outfits like Far East any good?

All the best,

Edd

Re: Stus-List C 30 MKI?

2018-10-08 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List

This month’s Cruising World has an awesome photo of a 30? (It could be a
27-29)I’m surprised no one has mentioned it, (unless I’m the only one still
reading it)

Re: Stus-List New Genoa?

2018-10-08 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
Edd,

Our local sailmaker (Bierig Sailmakers) makes great sails, and is just now
experimenting with a new style that he describes as a spider web pattern.

The idea is to get all the warp in line to take the load and reduce stretch.
He has done a couple and is pretty happy with the results. I think he may make
a spiderweb blade for me next year, I am looking forward to it.

The last one he did for me a couple years ago was what we called a hybrid – I
wanted something with the low stretch of the Pentax I had just worn out, with
the durability or Dacron (doesn’t everyone!) So he made a sail where the
corners were huge in Pentax and the main part was Dacron, a couple different
weights, theory being that most of the stretch occurs in the corners. It set
beautifully, but I have only had a Year and a month to try that one out, as I
didn’t sail this summer.

You can see a little picture of the sail here,
https://www.erieinterclub.com/photos/

It is the middle photo, You can see how big the corners are.

He doesn’t do too many sails anymore, but if you tell him you are interested in
either one of these he may want to do it, he likes trying new ideas.

Re: Stus-List New Genoa?

2018-10-08 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
Edd,

When you get the sail, consider not using Sunbrella for the UV sun cover, but a
sacrificial strip of the sail cloth. I have it on my second jib and in both
cases it worked great. The first one lasted 10 years (and I sold the boat) and
this one is on the 5 year and is not showing any signs of deterioration. The
only issue might be that it would be white and not colour coordinated with the
rest of your boat.

I used Somerset
Sails in NY (they are outside of Buffalo, kind of, across the Lake from us).

Also, especially, if you are
planning to order form away, triple measure the sails (actually, your boat).
The actual dimensions have very little in common with what is published and
with what the sailmakers have in their files (e.g. my new Main is almost a foot
longer in the luff).

Good luck with your search

HI

I have a rarely use STD HORIZON WS45 that appears not to work. I even
connected the masthead unit directly to the connector at the back of the
instrument and nada. Where can I get a competent electronics person to look to
fix it?

Failing that, what instruments are out there that fill the I think 4” hole?

Thanks
