Captain Andrew J. Rae and Sons in Halifax just rebuilt my Ritchie
Globemaster. They replaced the dome, the 12V light assembly, O-ring,
clamping ring, base assembly and fluid. I picked it up this afternoon and
I'm very pleased with it. I asked if they are able to source parts in
Canada. They said no, they have to order from the USA.

Johnny,  I keep a list of boats and owners that may interest you.  The boats
were made from 1989 till 1995 and were called C 34R, Plus and XL.  Your
vessels HIN will state the model type.  Let me know if you're interested.

Stus-List Filling diesel tank

2018-10-26 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Dave,

I just use the regular cheapo yellow plastic 5 gal Jerry can I bought at
Advance Auto parts..

When I first saw it I didn't care for the "over engineered" spout system
now mandated by the feds but it turns-out to work really well. It does
not allow the fuel to flow until you press the spout into the filler which
makes it super easy to tilt the spout into the filler without spilling...
It's equally easy to fill from the cockpit or the dock.

Works perfectly. I keep a paper towel / bottle of Windex handy in case a
couple drops get loose when I pull it out at the end.

Re: Stus-List Filling diesel tank Urban myths?

2018-10-26 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List

The volume in the fuel tank is fairly small, most of our boats it would be less
than 0.1 cubic meter.
At around 90 degrees Fahrenheit that would be about 1/10 of an ounce of water
in the air in an
empty tank.

http://www.yachtsurvey.com/myth_of_condensation_in_fuel_tanks.htm

If the temperature starts around 60F and drops to 20F about 0.03 ounces of
water would condense
in a 0.1 cubic meter tank. Air changes volume about 3% for a 40F temperature
swing, so per month
another 0.03 ounces of water might get in.

Note that the numbers assume the maximum amount of water in the air, or 100%
relative humidity.
If the winter relative humidity is 50% then cut the numbers above in half.

In Maryland we have high humidity and large temperature changes during the
winter. I had to rebuild the wood supports for my fuel tank because so much
water would condense on it the wood rotted!
The aluminum tank is frequently covered with drops of water on the outside
during the winter.

I?m not in total disagreement, but the urban myth may be more of a Great White
North myth. In that, when it gets cold out it stays cold until spring.  But
otherwise, when it get cold at night and warms up in the day, it best to keep
the tank either full or empty.

The reason is that a metal tank with some liquid will dehumidify the air inside
(and outside) the tank during the daytime when ambient air starts to warm
relative to the night time lows.  Think about a tank half full after a cold
night.  The cold fuel is a big heat sink and will keep the tank fuel and metal
container much colder than the warming daytime air.  Warming air + cold metal
surface = condensation, i.e. cold sweat.  A full tank has less condensing
surface and less air inside.  An empty Aluminum tank will warm and cool with
ambient air so there will be little if any condensation.  I guess one could
close up the tank (i.e. close of breather line) to try to eliminate the
reoccurring condensation, but that?s likely not as easy as it sounds (and end
up being a bigger PITA than filling the tank).

With any luck, Global Warming will rid the Canadians of some urban myths?.

Stus-List Handheld battery case

2018-10-26 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
Listers:

Going through some stuff coming off the boat for the winter, I came across
a battery pack for a Horizon HX850S handheld radio. The radio comes with a
rechargeable battery, but you can also get a battery case that holds six double
A batteries as a backup. I believe the radio got packed with a chute by
mistake during a race. We heard a splash when the chute went up and I haven’t
seen it since. The battery case doesn’t fit my replacement radio. I am about
to discard the case but figured I’d offer it up first. As far as I know, it
only fits the HX850S. Any interest?

The dome/lens on our Ritchie globe Navigator compass model SP-05 has crazed and

Yea, you gotta stuff a rag in each end.  I'll usually try to prop it up
somehow, if a can to let it drip back into the Jerry can for a while if
at all possible.  I actually left the hose from my oil extractor propped
up from last weekend to let the oil drain out of it all week before I
store it again.

Scepter Military Fuel 20l plastic, two on ebay for sale now  $100.00.

I have been using them for 10 years, never leak and no-spill if you
use their fill spout.

Very  pricey but the last can you will have to buy.
