Re: Stus-List Broken paddle wheel on speed transducer

FWIW, I would strongly suggest skippers remove the speedo paddlewheel after
sailing and plug the hole with the manufacturer's plug. I race and I do it
after every race, so I've gotten good at it. That way the paddlewheel will
stay clean and accurate. I put the speedo in before going sailing and I switch
the plug back in after sailing and we're back at the dock. I use my boat on
weekends, so this policy keeps the speedo clean and protected and if I miss a
weekend, the speedo remains clean and safe. I lube the O-rings with dielectric
grease each spring and the parts go in and out very easily. I keep the plugs
and a small tube of grease in a small plastic tub that sits in the bilge where
it is usually dry, and it floats if the water collects in there.

If you haven't done it, it's a good skill to learn and once you become
proficient, and have the speedo or plug ready to go in, only a cup of water
will come into the bilge. It's also a good thing to practice a few times on
land long before you launch and when I bottom paint the hull, I include doing
the plug.

I've got the grounding cable as well, but it only goes from the metal "shoe"
that holds the mast butt to the keel bolt.  Nothing up the mast.RonWild

Given heavy-gauge single-conductor, I’d guess grounding cable for lightning

Grenadine has a short AWG 0 gauge battery cable bolted to the mast box on one
end and a keel bolt on the other end.  No such long cable in the mast.

Re: Stus-List Broken paddle wheel on speed transducer

2019-03-12 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
You might want to look closely at your housing, the same thing happened to
me fall 2017, and we determined the sling pressed up on the wheel, cracking
the top of the housing where the 1/4" Pin pokes through, holding the
transducer in the housing. There was nothing to keep the transducer from
being forced up into the hull with water pressure. And this DIDN'T even
break the paddlewheel!
On another note, altho we did jury rig it with a sheet metal screw through
another part of the housing to make it home, the speed was registering
around 170 - 190 MPH - So, in other words, it was completely shot. Your
results may vary.

During haulout, the paddle wheel was broken, part of the St60+ unit. Does
anyone know of a Raymarine shop that offers used or repaired units for
resale.

You can replace just the paddle wheel if that is all that was broken. Otherwise
you will have to replace the transducer if the prongs that hold the paddle
wheels are broken.
