Andy,

Thanks for the nice compliment!!

For the record, I’ve owned her since 2001, have cruised south every other year
since 2003. Cuttyhunk is a favorite destination, though that night got a bit
ugly. Even with 100’ of chain out, I still stood watch from 2:30am till
morning. Unfortunate for the three that went aground that night.

Wish I’d known you were there, would’ve liked to say hi!

Now I’m in Edgartown until I head north on Thursday.

Nice, that's good to know. This is a temporary situation, so 5 days at a
time shouldn't be a problem.

Stus-List Marinco solar vent motor

2019-08-12 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Dennis,

I replaced mine about 4 years ago, it's still running 24/7 * 12 months a
year.

I also replaced the NiMH battery at the same time, I used an Eneloop "C"
size, don't think those are still available. They sell a "C" adapter for
their AA battery or you can just buy a regular NiMH "C" or sub "C" cell

At the time, I looked everywhere for higher quality motor but couldn't find
it, so I bought a $2.00 motor.

I believe this is what I used:
https://www.homesciencetools.com/product/motor-electric-dc-0-5-6-volt/

I had to do some minor mods to it: If I remember right I wrapped a couple
layers of tape around it to insure a tight fit in the housing as the
diameter is slightly smaller than the Marinco original motor and I also
used small zip ties to help secure the original impeller to the shaft.
Beyond that, it's a simple matter of soldering the small capacitor and
leads as per the original.

I can check for you / take pictures when I go to my boat which should be
tomorrow or Wednesday.

Regards,

2019-08-12 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
I am getting about 2 AH per day out of that. 5 days should be OK with good
batteries (for one battery). 10 days would be pushing it.
My 50 watt solar panel would easily keep up with this and keep the batteries
topped off. Even a 25 watt panel would do.

Infinite battery life would be pretty great.

I'm mostly just wanting to know if we're talking days or weeks here. The boat
is away and offhand I can't remember what amp/hour batteries I have, but
they're wet 12v batteries (i.e. probably like car batteries) so I feel like we
could estimate 45 amp hours(?) per battery. The pump draws 1.9amps and the
'check' it does is about 1 second long, roughly every 30 seconds.

I left the boat Sunday morning with the batteries mostly full and I'll be back
to the boat on Thursday evening. Any reason I should be worried?

I installed 2 grease (zerk) fittings in my rudder post. Not particularly
difficult to do.

Touché’s Marinco/Nicro model 20703 3 inch solar vent motor died. I bought a new
20703 and installed it. Marinco no longer makes the 20703. It’s now the 20803.

Anyway, the solar panel in the old one still puts out 2.2+ vdc. It’s the motor
that’s dead. I think the motor is just a 1.5-3 vdc small hobby motor. They cost
about $5. On the old motor are “227” and “2E29”. The motor is about 1 3/8 inch
diameter and 1 inch tall. Don’t know the rpm.

I haven’t been able to find or cross reference the darn thing. Would be nice to
fix the old one as a spare.

Anybody know where I can find one or what a good industry number for one is?

I may hit a couple hobby shops to see if they can reference it.

Re: Stus-List Chirping rudder post, 37+ 40

2019-08-12 Thread Gary Russell via CnC-List
Hi Tom,
There are 3 small ball bearings that support the weight of the rudder
that are located under the radial wheel Perhaps they are the source of the
chirp. I replaced my large rudder bearings last year because of excess
rudder play (no chirp).

Re: Stus-List plugged engine water intake

2019-08-12 Thread Paul Baker via CnC-List
I removed the intake hose from the strainer, ensured it was above the waterline
and then attached the foot pump from my dinghy. Blows anything out, and the
bubbling confirms no blockage.
Cheers,

Subject: Stus-List plugged engine water intake

Last week on a cruise, we ran the motor while at anchor to warm the water tank
for showers. When we started the engine the next morning, I noticed the sound
of water from the exhaust seemed off and sure enough, a few minutes later the
engine began to overheat. We re-anchored and I went below to check the
strainer basket which had a bit of grass in it, but not enough to plug it up.
My wife (bless her heart) dove in and saw a big clump of seaweek attached to
the hull where the intake should be. She managed to clear it and we got under
way with no more trouble. One lesson is to be careful of running the engine
when the boat is at rest as I am sure you are much more likely to suck stuff
into the intake as opposed to when the boat is moving at 6 knots (that has
never happened to me). But the experience got me thinking about how to resolve
the problem of a plugged intake without swimming. Is it possible to take the
basket out of the water intake strainer and run something flexible and stiff
down the tube and clear the intake without diving? I am thinking of stiff wire
or something like the fiberglass snake I use for running wires through small
spaces. Anyone done this successfully? Dave
