I love my Fluke multi-meter industrial quality.
It the standard for hand meter at our power
plant. I bought the boat unit at a thrift shop,
found next to a box of old "remotes", for 10 bucks!

The essential boat tools are:
- 4 ounce shot glass
- bttl of Oakheart
- bttl of Gosling Black Seal (and ginger beer/lime)
- Gorrilla tape
- self fusing tape
- High temperature RTV silicone
- knockometer (hammer)
-

Fluke 101 multimeter.  For years I kept a $20
multimeter from a big box store on the boat in a
zip lock bag.  It worked fine.  A few months
ago I bought a Fluke 101 on Amazon for
$40.  MUCH better meter.  For those not into
electrical, Fluke makes very good meters.  I
have a Fluke 85 multimeter that I used in my
marine repair business for years.  The 101 is its baby brother.

Gearwrench 85035 Microdriver Set.  I love this
tool.  It gets in tight spots, applies extra
leverage needed to break loose fasteners and
gets used a LOT on Touche' and around my house.  I have 3 of them. Â

Seems like I could probably complete 90% of the
jobs on the boat with these two tools.

Alden Wrench 56038 Double Head Ratching Open-End Wrench, 3 Piece Set,

I love these because they fit well in tight spots and I don’t have to worry
about getting out the right size socket or open end wrench. Because of the
flexible size, you don’t need metric and SAE- either works on both types of
heads. So two wrenches do just about everything on the boat. Added bonus is
they are stainless steel. Down side- they are short so not much leverage so not
great for really stuck bolts/nuts. Dave

Re: Stus-List cockpit cup holders (solar panel mounting)

2019-10-07 Thread Kevin Benoit via CnC-List
Sure. I actually just modified a radar arch from a power boat that I found
at a local chandlery. Had to cut it shorter and modify the mounting plates
to match the deck curvature then used starboard as a base and thru bolted
it. The backing plates are also stainless. Unfortunately, I don't have
many specific pictures of the install but here is what I do have: Arch Pics
It was an ever-changing install but I'm very
happy with it. It is very sturdy. One thing that I have noticed on many
panel installs that, in my opinion, is a bit of overkill is the
bracing/frame under the panel itself. The panel's opwn frame is incredibly
strong and well built and I've never had an issue with the way we installed
them. The panels are used like a hard bimini and it's pretty typical for
people to grab onto them while stepping onto/off of the boat or when heeled
way over. She was moored in Isla Mujeres last year and Hurricane Michael
in its early stages swept through with 60 knot gusts and the panels held
strong with no damage at all. Happy to answer any other specific questions
you may have.

Hi Kevin,
I saw your post and looked at your photo and noticed the mounting of your solar
panels.  Can you share more photos of the mount and how you did it?
Thanks!

+1 for the robocup - we have one on the pedestal that came with our 35-2,
and it works very well. Not fancy, but solid and well designed. It won't
hold wine glasses or large diameter water bottles, but works well for the
Contigo insulated mugs we mostly use.

Finally my time to shine. I rarely sail without a beverage of some sort at
hand. I second Fred's solution. I really like the larger, sturdy 4 cup
mounted to the pedestal. Flashlights, sunscreen, whole wine bottles, Ipad,
endless possibilities beyond the usual beverage vessel options and your
drink is always at hand and stable amidship. I have extensively field
tested this setup and it never fails me.
