Re: Stus-List Raw water blockage
I am in the process of installing a new cylinder head on my Yanmar (raw water cooled) and discovered the exhaust manifold, where the passages looked free, had blockage on the end of the manifold where the mixing elbow connects. There is a large, flat copper gasket between the manifold and elbow which, when removed, showed a large build-up of carbon in the manifold passages, substantially blocking passage of the cooling water. Just another place to look. All are clear, elbow is new. Still, no water out exhaust. I am wondering if the vented loop between the heat exchanger and mixing elbow could be the culprit. It is even necessary on my boat? Seems that the elbow is well above the water line and the loop could be bypassed. The only other possibility is the hoses on the suction side of the system collapsing on the inside...but that still seems unlikely. Thoughts appreciated. Re: Stus-List Raw water blockage
Here’s what I would do: take the hose off the through hull and open the valve, making sure you get good flow. Check the gasket on the strainer and make sure it's tightened evenly to make sure you’re not getting air from there. Take the hose off the raw water pump and start the engine to make sure you have good flow there. Take the raw water hose off the back of the heat exchanger to make sure you have good flow there. When everything is connected, check the bilge for water flow when the engine is running. I suppose there could be a restriction at the top of the exhaust loop, but I’ve never had that happen. I would under no circumstance do away with the loop.
