Re: Stus-List Moisture Meter recommendation from Amazon or HD?

2020-02-19 Thread Kevin Driscoll via CnC-List
I bought a cheapish Klein moisture meter from Amazon this morning and it
was delivered this evening for $39. What I am hearing is that 50% think
this approach is good enough to discover problems and 50% think it's
worthless. I'll let you know. The Flir approach is interesting but sounds
like a blunt metric as it measures temperature gradient in lieu of moisture
content.
I appreciate everyone's input. Thank you

That's really good information Charlies, and after reading Josh's post, it
reminded me to just go tap on the deck where necessary.

I was, however, thinking about our cockpit area which for some magical reason
had teak installed.  I'm not really looking forward to stripping it all off and
sealing the holes.  I'd really like to know before I tackle the job if there is
water in the core of the cockpit deck or seats that is going to need
remediation.  Those areas under the teak decking I don't think will sound out
differently, and there is no access to the backside for tapping with a hammer.
Great thoughts though!

Agreed, the propane lockers are not structural.  Our linear drive is mounted to
a heavy shelf glassed to the hull.  If someone needs photos, I can take some,
but it will be a couple weeks before I will be at the boat again.

Re: Stus-List 1981 C 34 - second propane locker?

2020-02-19 Thread DMcMillan via CnC-List
I had a closer look today using a mirror on a stick through the port in the
back of the quarter berth and it appears that it was designed to be a locker
but a hole was never cut in the top of the port side corner seat. The
"lid" seems to be glued onto the top of the seat with Sikaflex or similar
that will have to be cut through with a long blade. I was able to insert a
kitchen knife between the lid and the top of the locker, but the 40 year old
Sikaflex has hardened. Maybe when it warms up a bit more it will soften and
I will be able to cut it.

I have a pinless and a professional style moisture meter. Both of which I
have never used. Someone who is willing to pay for shipping is welcome to
borrow both.

Having talked to surveyors, they basically say that meters are gross
detection or confirmation meters. Tapping out the hull is much more
reliable and has better resolution. Likewise, the FLiR does the same
thing. They give you something to focus your tapping inspection on.

Re: Stus-List Moisture Meter recommendation from Amazon or HD?

2020-02-19 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
If there is moisture in the core, the temperature of that material will be
different than solid glass laminate or dry core. After a cold night, when
the daytime temp rises above freezing, the wet core will remain colder longer
than the dry areas of the hull because the moisture being denser than balsa and
air, will hold the cold longer before warming up.

It's good practice to check a cored hull on a day where the nighttime and
daytime temperatures are thirty degrees apart. Like a common winter day in my
area where the nighttime temperature drops below freezing and then the
afternoon gets above 50. If you have wet core, any wet area will feel cold
and actually show surface condensation next to dry areas. Mark it with a
pencil for reference later.

Shawn,

My 1974 C 35 Mk2 still has the original three burner pressure alcohol
stove with oven, which is very tired and needs replacement.  I believe a
previous owner of Callisto had the boat modified for Propane, since
propane stoves are not listed as an option on 1974 C 35 price list - I
may be wrong though.  Do you have any photos of your lockers and could
you describe the plumbing for the propane stove with make and model of
the stove? Any info would be helpful when I haul out the old stove/oven.

The other 35-2 in the club has a modified locker on one side, where
the owner just cut the top off and added hinges. It seems to work
fine, and looks ok, but I think water intrusion may be an issue. With
mine, the entire cover is removable (teak, but now epoxied and painted
white), and there is an inner lip which prevents water from running
in, similar to the main cockpit lockers.

I haven't seen the 34 lockers, but it shouldn't be too difficult to
cut one in, depending on your experience with fiberglass work. You
will need some kind of sealed tub to fit the propane tank of course.

Re: Stus-List 1981 C 34 - second propane locker?

2020-02-19 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
My 35-2 has a locker on each side, the starboard being just for a
second tank with no hookup. I believe they are factory original, but have
been modified to accept a taller tank by extending the bottoms. The other
35-2 in the club has a modified locker on one side, where the owner just
cut the top off and added hinges. It seems to work fine, and looks ok, but
I think water intrusion may be an issue. With mine, the entire cover is
removable (teak, but now epoxied and painted white), and there is an inner
lip which prevents water from running in, similar to the main
cockpit lockers.

I haven't seen the 34 lockers, but it shouldn't be too difficult to cut one
in, depending on your experience with fiberglass work. You will need some
kind of sealed tub to fit the propane tank of course.

Re: Stus-List 1985 C 33-2 WINDOW REPLACEMENT CHALLENGE

2020-02-19 Thread Matt Wolford via CnC-List
An additional comment on the replacement windows. On my 42, the original plexi
was nearly a perfect fit into the insets, and I noticed gel coat chipping
around the edges of the insets. My theory about that chipping is the plexi
expanded more than the boat on hot days. In addition, the experts on this list
advised to leave a gap (1/8” to 3/16” as I recall) all around the replacements
to make room for the silicone. As a result, my replacement windows were
slightly smaller than the originals. Using my old windows, I made templates
out of ¼” ply, then trimmed/sanded them to the size I wanted. I then used the
templates, not the original windows, to cut the replacements. Another way
would have been to use the original windows as templates (as discussed below),
then sand them down before installing.

Raymond; I am quoting from instructions given to me by Dave Godwin of
http://roninrebuild.blogspot.com/2019/

from Dave"Windows are quite new. Three out of four of the old fixed ports
were only around 18 years old and not in too bad of condition. They could have
been polished up to look nice. But I went to a lot of trouble to fix the areas
around the ports (the inset surface and all stress cracks…) so I wasn’t going
to put old windows back in. Clean foot, dirty sock, etc., etc…

Four new fixed ports; take out the old windows and send them to Maritime
Plastics of Annapolis; Company is Annapolis Maritime Plastics, (410) 263-4424.
They will duplicate them;

For the installation I used the much discussed 3M VHB tape method. I had used
the old style, just squirted in sealant method in the past and vowed never to
do that again. Of course, those were pre-VHB days.

The actual installation was quite simple and fairly easy. After taping the
edges, inside and out, I used strips of tape off the top to create a hinge,
allowing the port to swing down into its correct position vis-a-vis the sealant
gap all around.

Prior to applying the VHB tape, I cleaned all the surfaces well with a clean
rag and a 50/50% mix of isopropyl alcohol and water. No mineral spirts or
acetone...

I ran the 1” VHB tape around the inset and trimmed the excess (the inset is
around 3/4”, give or take…) before gently putting the port in place. Some
momentary constant pressure around the edges and that was it.

There was some talk about spraying the inside edge of the fixed port black to
obscure the lighter background/irregularities but given that the VHB tape is
black but it made no sense to me. With the VHB tape trimmed to the edge all you
see inside the plastic is a nice black line provided by the VHB tape.

After doing that I ran black silicone caulk around the edges, wiped it with a
wet finger and that was all she wrote. Pulled the masking tape and surface
protection tape.

If you decide to do this here are some tips:

Watch a really good video on the
entire process.

Buy yourself a good caulk gun. Makes a huge difference in metering the flow and
is easy on the hand. One of my better tool purchases in light of using the old
cheap painting ones.

Good caulk. The stuff I used was like pudding, very smooth and loose. It went
in easily and more importantly, didn't start to form a skim coat the second it
came out of the tube. There was enough working time to run a bead all the way
around (one port…) and then come back to smooth it out.

If you ever decide to do this, I hope it helps. New ports really stand out.

Regards,

Dave

If you’re trying to figure out where you have wet core, this is not something
you want to go cheap on. You need one that works well. After buying a cheap

Dennis,
That is interesting - on my 1981 C 34 there is a second propane locker on
the port side - I keep a spare propane tank in it. It has a drain to outside
the hull above water line same as on starboard. Assuming you have the
through hull on the outside on port, I would guess that a previous owner
glued/painted the lid down and you just need to pry it open. The hinges are
symmetric about the helm seat on my boat.
Hope that helps,
Nathan

Stus-List C 34- second propane locker

2020-02-19 Thread Len Mitchell via CnC-List
Dennis,
I had a 1981 36 KCB and fabricated a second propane locker. The seat will be
screw fastened from below. I used appropriate diameter and length cardboard
sono tube as a template. I used glass and west system epoxy. I cut the hole
with a jig saw if memory serves and used the cut out as a bottom for the
locker. I also put a flange on top and a drain below to a small bronze thru
hull above the water line. Then you just copy the SS piano hinge from the other
locker. I did not pipe it, I would simply change tanks. The trick will be
getting a big enough sono tube to fit your tanks, but it’s a really easy job!
Long arms will allow you to reach the screws from the 6 inch plastic inspection
ports. Let me know if you need more info.

Ray, I'm in the process of doing windows on my 26' and, from previous
threads on this list, decided to use the 3M tape; mine doesn't use frames.

3M makes many types of double-backed tapes so I called and spoke to a
technician who suggested using 3M 4941 VHB. I found 15-foot rolls (one roll
for each side on my boat) on Amazon for a reasonable price. A local
distributor has 90-Meter rolls for about $!00.00.

I'll be using the Dow 795 to finish as many have suggested.

Good Luck with your project,

Stus-List Moisture Meter recommendation from Amazon or HD?

2020-02-19 Thread Kevin Driscoll via CnC-List
Hi all,
I am looking for a reasonably priced and quality moisture meter so I can
poke around my boat and others. Does anyone have a recommendation? I do not
need anything too professional, but just accurate enough for DIY level.
Thank you!

Re: Stus-List 1981 C 34 - second propane locker?

2020-02-19 Thread David Risch via CnC-List
My guess is that the second locker locker was an option. You paid for the
labor and parts to install the lid and its drain. You might be able to
fabricate a locker but results may vary...

Dennis,

That is interesting - on my 1981 C 34 there is a second propane locker on the
port side - I keep a spare propane tank in it. It has a drain to outside the
hull above water line same as on starboard. Assuming you have the through hull
on the outside on port, I would guess that a previous owner glued/painted the
lid down and you just need to pry it open. The hinges are symmetric about the
helm seat on my boat.

Hope that helps,

Nathan

The locker has a hinged lid. On the port side of the helm seat there is a
similar seat but the “lid” does not open. Has anyone opened this up and
utilized the space for storage?

Thanks.
