Problem was the groove for water flow was filled with water so the tape would
fail and not stick after getting soaked there. Don’t se the need for this as
water still sits right outside the channel. The wick idea at the I got from
this group is working great along the lo point of toe rail to remove that
sitting water.

All,

I have not tried it yet on the current Enterprise, but on the Enterprise-A
(1978 C 34), we had the steering cable snap in the middle of the night on the
way to Montauk. Between the prop wash and the waves, it was very difficult to
steer, but we set up a line from the e-tiller to a block on the rail, then to a
primary winch. Made a world of difference.

All the best,

I had the marina redo the tiller to fit--no big deal for someone who know how

The emergency tiller on Persistence runs at an angle from the rudder post

Hi,
I am impressed with the birth of the emergency tiller. However, it would appear
that I’d have to remove the wheel pedestal to have room for it to work.
If so, does anybody have any experience doing that?? I’m also thinking

My 37 has the deck scuppers and this was this First thing I fixed after
purchase. Unfortunately they are small and make a 90 degree turn not far from
where they go in so both sides were plugged tight :( so help water until nature
dried it out. Port side I was Able to shop vac too and hose out from below,
starboard broke when I touched it so I was left with a hole in my boat! Hole
was Topside yes but if it rained it leaked as it wa ms Not round, and not easy
to plug without replacing and sealing
Took a week to find he right scupper so I did not hard to change drain line to
through hull.
A real bear to get at inside the back wall plexi in galley so no real way to
see with doing the boat dance.
I installed #1 and dry fit only thankfully only to come up about 2 full turns
short of being perfectly snug ! Yes I ended up with 2 extra that did not fit
(length of Non threaded area) and grabbed a proper spare for the other side for
“when it goes” :)

Re: Stus-List Boat projects again- wire running through rail tube

2020-03-22 Thread David Knecht via CnC-List
I spent the day attempting to install my new Marinebeam LED navigation
lights. I posted the other day about their very low profile masthead light.
I have a solution for a pedestal to sit it on to raise it up which should not
be necessary. Today I worked on the bow and stern lights. The mount for the
lights is a really dumb design. I got done drilling 2 holes for the mounting
plate and one for the wire, had it all assembled and wire run through the rail
tube (thanks guys- it was some caulking gunk inside the tube) and then realized
that I had drilled the hole for the wire to the size of the shielded wire
bundle. However, the wire exits from the back of the unit through a larger
plastic tube that is 0.4" in diameter rather than the 5/16” I had drilled for
the wire. That plastic tube sticks out past the mounting plate so the only way
to flush mount is have the hole big enough to insert the tube. That tube is
larger than my largest cobalt drill bit (3/8” and needs 7/16"). So I had to
take it all apart again (pulling the wire out of the rail tube that I spent an
hour getting it through) and now I need to find a drill bit that will fit my
drill and cut a huge hole through stainless steel plate. The 3/8” took alot of
effort and I am not looking forward to cutting the larger hole. Either that or
I need another shim to bring the whole thing further from the stainless steel
plate. I can surely solve this, but there is no good reason for that tube to
stick that far out the back when most people are going to flush mount the light
and their holder is designed as flush mounting. It is just bad design. Also
there is no customer service email, chat of phone number (I finally found one,
but well hidden) on their web site where I can lodge a complaint. Not happy
with that company! Hope to not buy from them again. Dave

Re: Stus-List Emergency tiller

2020-03-22 Thread John Conklin via CnC-List
Funny story in these times where we are all online a bit too much;) After all
this tiller talk,
Had a dream last night I was practicing righting my 30ft (open cockpit) boat,
really? did about 4 perfect recoveries standing on keel of course, like it was
a laser ?? Not! Then soon after I started sailing back Snap! no steering. So I
put to work another article I read that linked on steering without rudder and
made it to the ramp! well 1 problem, I was at wrong ramp! this one was for
boats under 20ft so I could not get my truck in
No problem, headed back out. Using sails to steer, and then woke up. Not sure
if I made it ??
May have to lay off the iPad a little and back to fixin stuff :)
Be well! Dream on
Or
start a “your best-sailing dream thread for little lightness in these tough
times.
Ciao!

This thread reminds me that I still haven't finished fabricating the e-tiller
for my 35-2. I think I asked a while back, but if anyone has a photo of an
original 35 mk2 tiller, I'd love to see it. It is quite different from the mk1,
since the rudder post is behind the pedestal. What came with the boat is a
thick steel plate that clamps on the rudder post, then a vertical aluminum pipe
to bring the height to almost above the wheel, ending in a "T" welded to the
pipe. I have a few ideas on how to make a tiller to attach to "T", but am still
curious to see what an original looks like.

Oh, and my re-wiring job that is quickly progressing to a complete teardown of
the boat has almost reach the steering gear, so an inspection under there is
imminent. Things looked good in terms of nicely greased and clean, but the
issue of cable damage caused by rudder turning too far needs to be checked - my
rudder turns beyond 45 degrees at full lock.

Re: Stus-List Boat projects again- wire running through rail tube

2020-03-22 Thread John Conklin via CnC-List
Yea agreed next time will be different (and LED)
As a newbie boat owner
This was one of the first projects I wanted to tackle removing those badly
crazed Nav lights they were on sale and thought a minimal investment easy to
switch with no mount or wire isssues for a nice noticeable Change. Then I
heard all the benefits and suggestions on LED but too late :( At the moment I
don't cruise a lot and only got stuck out for 1 night time arrival so far where
I even used lights. I did have a few small trial trips planned this year and my
first week long with our local club which will start with a night sail! So
good motivation to get finished. I do plug in so amps and such were not of
concern (is now) I even went to 1 starter as recommended when I changed out my
charger with the pronautic which is working great !!
I thought this would be easy and I did get 2 of the 3 done as well as mast
deck light (full of water) by the yard, from the bucket while they were adding
new windex
But this last one is keepin it real!
I am close to boat now for quarantine and hope to use this time for more
projects
They started dredging our channel this week, and need to finish by end of
season 3/31! So getting out this week is not really recommended
So Breaking out the list
Bow Light
Wheel pilot crunching not working
Water pressure
Then the spring checklist
Will post others do not want to Hijack this thread
Be safe all!
