Re: Stus-List Bilge pump cycle counter

2020-03-27 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
Looks like a nice device, but I'd prefer one that can tell me where where
the water is coming from after a brisk sail. After 30 years in IT building
redundant systems, I learned that it's often the simplest thing that fails,
and if you don't know what to do when it does (and it's backup also fails),
no amount of redundancy will save you. But it is also very good to know
when something is behaving our of the ordinary, like a pump cycling more
often or longer than usual.
I once almost lost a large storage array once when I discovered the failure
alerting systems were not working, so we all assumed that the "hotspare"
drives were all operative. I happened to notice an error light one day,
only to find that three of the four spare drives had already failed (part
of a bad batch of drives...). So warning systems are great, but procedures
to check that they are working are also critical to avoid a false sense of
security.

For me, almost every time I arrive at the boat, I manually cycle the bilge
pump, and listen to the noise. If it takes longer than usual to empty the
bilge, I will investigate. If so, the next thing I will do is manually lift
the float switch to ensure it's still working. But I am rarely away for
more than a week, and have a second pump with a higher float switch in case
the primary fails, so this is enough redundancy.

Not a common occurrence even with these old C&c boats. Anyway if you want
these electronics and you put your trust in them and don’t mind the hassle
they give you with keeping them working and somewhat reliable: fine with
me. Let me know where i am and where i am headed and how fast like the
chart plotter does and i am ok. That’s why i got a backup chart plotter in
my hand held gps. Plus one more hand held both battery powered AA so i can
lots of AA’s always. They are cheap to buy. Makes me and her feel better
about sailing. Hitting fog around here is inevitable. We get through it
just fine.

Hey,

Good news! After seeing the earlier email from Bill Coleman, I called Bert
Jabin's boatyard and they told me their yard is open to owners to work on their
boats, "Come on down, just use social distancing and common sense."

I then called my yard in Pasadena and shared that info. Bert Jabin's is
probably the biggest yard in the area with the most expensive boats. My marina
guy said he knew about it, though I doubt it, and said they were discussing the
change and would notify me after their meeting. I expect they will free up the
restriction and though I missed three really good days for epoxy work, I'll be
happy to get back to finishing my projects.

I think you want a time counter, not a cycle counter. Any leak the pump
cannot keep up with is only 1 cycle!

Looks like a nice all in one bilge panel.

Bit more reasonably priced than the Water Witch:

However, the Water Witch tracks 24 hr, 7 day and 14 day cycles.

Yeah, I could wire up a $10 cycle counter but that's just not how

Stus-List Marinas in Md, Covid-19

2020-03-27 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List
Hey,

I expect they will free up the
restriction and though I missed three really good days for epoxy work, I'll be
happy to get back to finishing my projects.

remote monitor for the boat. I already have a good chart plotter so it doesn’t
need to do that. It will be headless (no monitor) and serve up data from:

- bilge monitor

- temp monitor

- humidity monitor

- camera stream

- battery monitor

Eventually I might tap into the chart plotter+radio’s N2K but that’s not a
priority for me.

I use RPis for my work. They are pretty powerful little units with the freedom

I almost did that, but I could not make the numbers work. Once you are all in
with the various parts and a monitor, it is cheaper in both $$$ and power to
just get a laptop.

The Chromebook I hacked into a Linux machine draws about 0.5 amps when charged

Re: Stus-List COVID-19 Marina Closures Frustration

2020-03-27 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
Just got this updated notice from Bert Jabins Yard, in Annapolis.

https://imgssl.constantcontact.com/letters/images/sys/S.gif

To Our Customers,

As we let you know earlier this week, on Monday we closed in response to
Governor Hogan’s Executive Order requiring all non-essential businesses to
close. Even before we closed, we had started to try to get further guidance as
to whether the Executive Order applied to BJYY. As a result of those efforts we
have now received guidance through the Governor’s office that, assuming
adherence to sound CDC practices, we can engage in limited operations. The
office will remain closed to the general public, the Back Creek Café will
remain closed, and our operations will be limited by the number of employees
who are able to work and adhere to social distancing rules.

As a result of the new guidance, we are now able to operate on a limited basis
and we will try to accommodate as many customers as possible. Please keep in
mind that we will be operating at a reduced capacity and will not be open to
the general public. We will require social distancing, employees who have
health issues will not immediately return to work, and we will ask owners not
to be present at the launch and to remain away from our launch staff until they
indicate otherwise. Although these steps will affect our operations, they are
essential to limiting the spread of COVID-19 and, we hope, will be viewed as
reasonable limitations on our normal operations.

We have only lost three days of launching and our intention is to attempt to
catch up with those three days between now and Monday. It is our intention to
be in a position to launch the boats as scheduled beginning on Monday the 30th.
We have many challenges to achieve this aggressive schedule but we are going to
do our best.

As indicated in our letter earlier this week, we will not be increasing storage
rates on April 1st. In view of the confusion relating to the shut down as well
as the limited capacity we will face in the immediate future, we think it fair
to stay with the existing, lower, winter rate, even though we may well be back
on schedule.

We all hope that the current situation is resolved very soon, for a number of
reasons and that we will be able to return to our normal operation. We also
want to continue to do our part to keep our customers and employees, and their
families, safe. It is our objective to continue to serve our customers even in
these challenging circumstances and, to the greatest extent possible, meet your
boating needs.

We are doing our best and appreciate your support, patience and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Rod Jabin

Easy everyone!

This is a hugely frustrating experience for all. Banning people from marinas
only lasted about a day in Maryland, see my previous post about the
clarification from the governor’s office. My marina never even tried, with
about 20 live-aboards and no physical way to prevent it there was no point.

I come close to probably 100 people buying groceries and exactly 0 people at
the marina, so there is really no risk at all of me catching or spreading
anything.

Have a thought for fellow sailors in a MUCH WORSE fix. Take a look at some of
the forums like noonsite and cruisers forum – there are many boats that are the
equivalent of the Flying Dutchman. They left X a couple weeks ago and no place
ahead of them wants anyone entering and they can’t go back a couple thousand
miles upwind to a port that probably wouldn’t let them enter either. There is a
whole snowbird fleet in the Bahamas facing a very uncertain future. The Out
Islands have a very tenuous supply chain on a GOOD day and almost nonexistent
medical facilities. What happens when they arrive in the USA is not a sure
thing, many if not all marinas are not taking transients or selling fuel, and
the situation is doubly bad for Canadian flag vessels that don’t have enough
stores and fuel to go direct from the Bahamas to Canada. They run the risk of
being pretty much stuck at whatever port in Florida they show up at.

Meanwhile we are trying to figure out the season for CRYC. Board meetings are
now conference calls and we have no clue if we’ll have any racing at all or our
summer kids sailing. This is going to be very hard for programs all over the
country that were on the edge financially. The instructors that are not yet
hired can’t get unemployment for jobs they don’t have. If this follows the
Spanish Flu model summer won’t even be the end of it.

Re: Stus-List COVID-19 Marina Closures (was Re: Covid 19 update MD & USVI)

I would be calling them today and explaining marinas in Maryland are NOT
CLOSED to boat owners. Also would be the last time my boat was ever in
that place. I am grateful to be in the water and operational, I can
leave at will. I think my marina would be too afraid to not get any more
slip fees paid to try this, our lot over here are cheap bastards and it
would be "no boat no cash".

I hope someone talks some sense into these guys.
