Re: Stus-List Diesel Filter

2020-06-04 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I was the delivery skipper taking Enterprise from New York to Venice, Fl. Ed
had had the engine stall when using it a day or two before our departure, and
the mechanic had diagnosed as a fuel issue and plugged primary filter. We left
with a new Racor primary on the engine.

Made it to somewhere south of Miami (sailing, motor sailing, or motoring as
wind and weather dictated) when the engine stalled, with the appearance of a
plugged filter. We used all the spares, but could not keep the engine running.
Limped into Marathon. Had the fuel tank polished (Edd has the pictures, the
fuel did have a lot of crud and water in it) and left with a new stock of spare
filters. Made it almost to the channel under the 9 mile bridge when the engine
stalled again. WTF?

Ultimately, the lift pump on the engine was heating up and shutting down. It
would cool down as we changed filters and reprimed and then run until it got
hot again. Diesel mechanic in Marathon replaced the lift pump and we made the
trip from the Keys to Venice with no problem… and I suspect Edd has had none
since. The only real difficulty we had about the repair was getting the pump
shipped in since there are no Beta or Kubota diesel shops in the Keys.

At one level, and in retrospect, I chide myself for not suspecting the lift
pump in the first place. I had exactly the same problem several years ago on
the Universal M35B in my 38 (I even carry a spare pump among my parts inventory
– and as the general rule would indicate, since I carry a spare I’ve never had
a second pump failure). Both my Universal and the Beta are based on Kubota
tractor engines. But mine had an electric lift pump and Edd’s is mechanical so
I failed to make the connection.

FWIW, I was told that the Kubota engine as modified by Beta uses a 3 or 5
micron secondary on the engine, and a 10 micron Racor primary. I suspect Edd
has a lifetime supply of the Racors on his boat.

I wasn’t on board, but I think one was a precaution and the other because of a

Bo,

Much will depend on how much you use your engine, how clean your tank is, and
the quality of fuel you are using.

When the Enterprise came down from New York, she was practically motoring the
entire time, adding many hours of engine use in three weeks. For that trip, the
filters were changed two times.

For normal use, like Josh, I have a fine raycor filter and change that maybe
once every several years - or if I can see notable clogging or the engine
stalls. The filter on the engine Itself I change once every three years or so.

I used to do oil changes and oil filter changes every fall before laying up for
the winter. Since there is no real layup season down here in Florida, I still
keep to my fall schedule.

My engine (Beta 30) came with a maintenance schedule based on engine hours. If
you have that for your engine, that should be an excellent guide.

All the best,

Edd

Interesting about the 5/16 on the 30-1. My 35-2 are definitely 1/4", oval head
philips machine screws, and the 2" length sounds correct.

Thank you Mike –

You have given me a couple a couple of leads to follow, no pun intended. I
will try a separate 24v Lead, and see what happens. Altho not likely, I thought
that possibly the motor was made on a Friday and the crimper didn’t strip the
motor leads or something, who knows. I do know that I had just removed a
Dometic suction pump, and it did work fine, so I will see what I can find,
thanks.

Somewhere in your there is a high resistance. Maybe a bad crimp, corroded
connection, bad float switch? Even a faulty breaker. A few voltage
measurements with respect to the battery negative should show where the voltage
is being lost. Voltage cannot disappear, it is being dropped somewhere and
that is the faulty connection or device.

I have a peculiar problem. I have a brand new whale gulper pump, 24 volt. I
have 24 volts going to it, but just as soon as I connect the leads, nothing
happens, and the voltage goes to zero in those leads. But it does not throw a
breaker. Red to red, black to Black. Does anyone have any ideas what could be
going on?

Since my boat has a modified rig I get all my sails locally, so the loft

things manufactured in China, it is hard, but I do try.

We just took delivery of a new main and 140% Jib from the UK loft in
Chicago.  They came out and measured the boat to fit the sails.  We
weren't sure if we were going to get our sails this season since
Illinois is in tighter lock down than Michigan was but the loft was
making masks and finishing orders on the side.  The sails fit great.
First sail with them was really nice.  They have to go back to the loft
at the end of the season because they weren't able to put the sail
numbers or insignia on during the house arrest.  That's no big deal to
us.  The upside of it is that they still haven't billed us for the
balance of the sails yet.

Local lofts are well worth the extra for the attention and service provided.

IMHO I would not ever use a remote mail order business for canvas or sails if
it can be avoided. The local cheap sail guy may be sourcing his sails from
China or Thailand at the back end, but he is available to take measurements and
make alterations. Locally Bacons will sell you a new sail for about the same
price as the cheap mail order places and be there in person to take care of
issues. If the local sailmakers all go out of business, there will be no one
around to fix your cheap sail and then it won't be so cheap ;)
