Stus-List Re: Atomic 4

2021-02-18 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Joel,

The Atomic 4 is a simple engine to work on.

In addition to Moyer, you might contact Old Lyme Marina in Connecticutt. I
got parts from them when I was resurrecting my old AT4.

Here's what I did to resurrect it after 10 years or so of it being idled.

1. Pulled plugs and poured a tablespoon or so of Marvel Mystery Oil down
each cylinder.
2. Removed and cleaned sediment bowl
3. Rebuilt carberator. It should be a Bendix Zenith carb. Rebuild kit
from NAPA
4. Sprayed carb cleaner through all fuel lines
5. Disconnected and cleaned all wiring
6. Found start button inoperative. Cleaned it. Replace if necessary
7. Replaced spark plugs and bench set timing.
8. Closed cooling water intake seacock and cranked it until it finally
started
9. Removed plates on either side of block and cleaned/inspected water
passages
10. Ran engine at fast idle + and poured automatic transmission fluid into
carb

Note: Don't do Step 10 in a crowded marina. It generates HUGE amounts of
smoke.

The purpose of closing the seacock is to prevent water from backing up into
the cylinders if the engine doesn't start. The combustion gases blow the
water out. If you try to start it in your garage, this is not applicable.

My previous boat had a running AT4 when I bought it. I installed an
electronic ignition and coil kit from Indigo. Moyer sells one.

Sometimes AT4 ignition coils will overheat and short out internally.

Looking for a source of the parts to repair a drawer from the Nav Station,
specifically the plastic corner pieces that join the front to the sides.

Photos linked below:
Photo 1 - the corner piece that is not broken, I need a piece like this on the
other
side
Photo 2 - back

Photo 4 - drawer construction

PSA - if you put too much hardware in a drawer and the boat heels in heavy
seas, it can all slide at once and break out the front of the drawer and spill
everything out onto the cabin sole. /end PSA

Cheers y'all. Any help you can offer is appreciated.

There is also an Atomic 4 Facebook group.

Don't forget on Moyer's site there are free 'how-to' videos (

https://moyermarine.com/product-category/videosdvds/), Tech Tips (
https://moyermarine.com/techtips/) FAQs (https://moyermarine.com/faq/),

And the best thing you can do is probably order their manual (

Chances are you will not need a new motor. This is a very simple motor and you
could rebuild the thing with basic tools. There are also lots of parts
available for this engine. Moyer has a forum you could join and ask all your
questions there. My last boat had an A4 and I was on that group. There are
threads where people chronicled their rebuild in their basement! I would
definitely start in the the moyer forums. I have a bunch of parts laying
around that I might be able to help you out with. I actually have a brand new,
never installed, electronic ignition kit. I bought it to upgrade my engine
but, ended up buying a moyer rebuilt that came with that already installed.

Yes!

I don’t understand why you would drill out a hole oversize, and lose the
strength and structure the fiberglass provides, leaving just some epoxy only
held on by a thin bond attached to the edge. It isn’t that hard to pick out
the balsa with a pick, or Allen key like Dave suggests. Granted, you may have
backing plates going past the edges, but it still doesn’t seem right to remove
good fiberglass structure.

another trick to removing core is using a ground down Allen key chucked in a

To keep the epoxy in place make sure you use lots of colloidal silica in the

Regarding Dennis’ comment about overbored holes being hidden by the track, a
trick I like to use is to drill up from underneath and stop when the bit

surface stays the same size. In addition, you know precisely where to place
the deck fitting and drill the new hole.
