Stus-List Instrument calibrations
Hey all; I have a set of Garmin GM10 instruments on Water Phantom including the masthead wind direction/speed sensors along with sensors for the depth, speed thru the water paddlewheel, etc. They are tied to a NEMA 2000 network backbone and to a Garmin 542(?) chart plotter all about 8-10 years old and all working well AFAIK. I no longer have any instructions for them, except what I can find on-line. Since these are legacy instruments (no longer made) its proven difficult to find information on if or how to calibrate them--especially the wind or paddlewheel sensors. Intuitively, assuming the wind sensors on the mast head are lined up with the center line of the boat, I think I could point the boat into the wind and see if the apparent wind angle on the display reads zero (or relatively close to it). If it does, I am fine. If not, something is awry! Since I now have polars for my boat (via an ORR/ODC measurement certificate) I have target boat speeds and target AWAs. Of course, if I am to sail to these targets, I need the instruments to be approximately showing reality--not to 0.1 degree or 0.1 knot precision--but at least within a few degrees or a few fractions of a knot. My current AWA reading is consistently different upwind on different tacks by 5-10 degrees. Thus I suspect something is not right with the instrument or the display--I may not be able to get to the exact AWA on each tack but I am confident that I can get closer than 5-10 degrees of the same number. If the sensor is mounted correctly and calibrated correctly (it comes internally calibrated as I recall) my simple solution is to 'change the displayed wind angle' to 0 degrees (or as close to it as I can maintain the boat into the wind) during this change. If so, all I am trying to do is make the GM 10 display(s) match what the sensors send them. I can imagine doing something similar with the displayed speed through the water using the GPS speed when motoring on a calm, light wind day. Head into the wind with no sails up and if necessary adjust the speedo display to match the GPS SOG--local current is usually less than a few tenths of a knot. My problem is that I cannot find any info on how to change the display (or offset) of the GM 10. About all I can do is use the buttons on the GM10 displays to see if I can find a 'calibrate' screen, make any changes and then save the new calibration. However, this could be time consuming (~4 buttons with several, perhaps many choices/button) and likely fruitless given the number of combinations of buttons and the number of underlying choices per button. Does anyone on the list have a link or instructions on how to change the values that the GM 10 instrument displays? OTOH, if these displays cannot be adjusted, any suggestions on how to solve this problem (different AWAs on different tacks) would be appreciated. My mast will soon be down for replacing my standing rigging so I will have a good look at the mast head wind sensor and how it is mounted. Stus-List Re: olympics
My parents put me in sailing lessons when I was 7 (Wet Pants Sailing, Sayville, NY).My instructor was a Finn sailor. As a treat at the end of the summer, he took me out on his Finn. I wanted one ever since. It took me 40 years, but I finally got one ( 11 years ago). No fleets around here. I have been sailing bigger boats now, but once or twice a summer, I just have to get wet and take the finn out on a good windy day. Both boats are fun to sail, and though I have only had the 35mk3 in the water less than 2 months, both are technical to sail well and get the most out of them. I suppose the Finn is a great boat to sail. Do you have some experience with Finns? I started with a Sunfish but didn't like having to find someone to help me lift it onto my car's roof racks as she's too heavy for one person. I later got a 22' sloop that I kept in a boatslip. Then I got into windsurfing and enjoyed the portability of a board that weighs under twenty pounds. Sold the sloop and started exploring different beaches with our windsurfers. After fifteen years, I got our C 34R and got back into "sitdown" sailing. Initially we cruised her, then I raced with crew and more recently I set her up to singlehand and cruise and race her that way. She's a lot of fun. Stus-List C 30 mk1 tiller to rudder post connection
I attempted to send a picture of my question but my photo had to high a resolution to be posted. My tiller is attached to the rudder post with one through bolt. The holes on the post are starting to become oval which allows movement. I think there should be some sort of insert which would spread the load. Could some one with a tiller photo how theirs' is attached. I'll look into copying my photo with a lower resolution that will help.
