First time I have seen the embedded plates. I was wondering if it was due to
the first production run of the 121 and things changed in the future.

That said, I would hope that the threads were coated simply due to dissimilar
metals and associated corrosion.

I found no references in the owners manual to the deck hardware approach, which
was what prompted the question.

The biggest questions that arise for me:

*   Bedding compound used
*   Thread protection
* Torque on the Phillips head screws
* Any changes or upgrades others may have done on the various 99/110/115
and 121 models which I assume were sharing the same technology and architecture.

Bill, would you consider the aluminum backing plates to be an improvement? Or a
cost savings measure? (Not trying to cause trouble, just curious...) Thanks

I agree, I went on a tour through the CNC / tartan factory 15 or 20 years ago,
and I do remember them saying that they embedded aluminum plates in points
where they had to bolt deck hardware. I would call the factory, and ask them if
they used tef gel on those bolts. If not, I would take them all apart and lube
them so you can get them out in the future

Stus-List Re: Steering cable

2021-08-13 Thread Steve Thomas via CnC-List
Whether or not the cables cross in the pedestal depends on whether your
boat has a quadrant or a radius wheel. A quadrant is normally mounted on
the forward side of the rudder shaft. I had to replace the sheave
assembly at the base of the pedestal on my 36 and the most challenging
part was hooking up the cables to the wheel on the rudder shaft. Not
rocket science any of it, but you need to be a contortionist to get at
it. I removed the scupper hose in order to gain better access.

   Subject: Stus-List Re: Steering cable

The first time I had to replace the steering cable I was advised to use
a coat hanger with a loop at the end and bent at a 90° angle to use as a
guide . Worked pretty well. Note that the cables cross in the
pedestal.

You may also want to replace the chain. When I replaced mine, I found on
close inspection that one of the links had a crack in it. BTW, not to take
anything away from the folks at Edson, you can get 7x19 stainless steel
cable and Nicopress fittings at West Marine to make your own cables and the
chain from McMaster Carr and combined it will be less than half the price.

Almost all of the deck fittings on the C 99 are tapped into aluminum backing
plates that are embedded into the epoxy deck.

Good morning all,This is my third C and still excited to sail her each time.Looking at my usual maintenance, rebed blocks, bases, sail tracks…..  well something is a miss.  My 121 is a 2000, actually the first run, a 121 Express.Scanning my cabin top i notice there are no plugs, thus no access to the backing of my winches, sail tracks etc….All of my other boats had the access holes with the plugs. Can someone guide me on if i am missing the magic door or secret code to make them appear?  Yes, subtle craziness at 5:30am on a friday.  Head scratcher for me.Had the funny thought that maybe the sail track backing plate is actually tapped stainless…. But cant confirm since i cant get access to see it….
