Glad to hear all are ok. Out here on the west coast I would like a little bit
of your wind. Sailind down to San Diego in 2-10kts of wind makes for a long
motor. Heading out the Straits of Juan de Fuca we beat head on into 19kts of
wind. Turned the corner at Cape Flattery today, we were able to sail for a
couple of hours before the wind died. Currently anchored in a little recess
heading to Grays Harbor tomorrow 75 nm south. Predict wind is calling for 10 -
15 kt winds on a broad reach in the morning then dieing to nothing by mid
afternoon.  If anyone is interested i can be tracked on Find Ship app Rebecca
Leah.  Sent from my T-Mobile 4G LTE Device

Dennis, Ed, glad to hear things aren’t worse. Please do update us on your
boats when you can.

Meanwhile I have kinfolk in Metarie and Walker. Haven’t heard from Metarie
yet, but lots of downed trees in Walker, and no power or water.

On Thursday I secured Briar Patch l. Removed main and Genoa and doubled dock
lines. The new harbor is floating docks with perhaps 18 feet rise. It takes
some of the anxiety out of hurricanes.

I left Friday for my son’s home in Greenville SC. I am old enough that I never
liked Ida from the time it was a tropical wave in the Caribbean. I beat the
rush driving out Friday.

Have seen a picture of the harbor. Just a few blown out jibs. Couldn’t see
Briar Patch but I am expecting to find her as I left her. Power outage is
another question.

I am old enough to know I did not like the looks of Ida when it was a
tropical wave in the Caribbean . I secured Briar Patch Thursday removing
both sails and doubled lines. I left town for my son's home in Greenville,

away (some) of the anxiety that hurricanes present. I have seen a picture
of the harbor and there doesn't appear any shredded headsails as last
year's lesser hurricane produced. Could not see Briar Patch but I believe
she will be there when I return after power is returned, who knows when.

The Admiral and I spent a scary sleepless night listening to 50-70 mph gusts
working on the many big trees around the house. One branch took out a couple
panes of glass in the master bedroom and the top 15-20 feet of a large oak tree
in the front yard bent over but stayed in the tree. Lots of branches in the
yard this morning. Otherwise we’re okay.

Fortunately, the eye passed about 20 miles east of us so we got very little
rain.

We have no power, internet or cable. We just got cell phone service about an
hour ago.

The water in Touche’s marina was 4.5 feet over the dock. I have not heard any
news about Touche’ yet. The water is still high in the marina.

Our friends in New Orleans might not have been so fortunate. Hope to hear from
Ed Levert and Kevin Benoit but suspect it may be a while. A major electrical
transmission tower blew down and left all of Orleans Parish without power. That
will not be an easy fix.

Stus-List Re: Boric Acid Powder

2021-08-30 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
You mentioned that you don’t want to use the spider spray, but this one
(Bug-Tek) is less toxic and does not hurt the environment that much. And it is
pretty effective. I use it to spray the dock lines - if they cannot get through
the lines, they have to swim to the boat or fly (I know some can fly on their
webs). So, the numbers are substantially reduced.

For the mice problem, we use cloves. It does not kill anything, but apparently
mice don’t like the smell. An added benefit is that the smell is quite nice for
most humans. We buy about 0.5 kg each fall and distribute them around the boat
(in small bags). When we had a cottage, we used another 1 kg for the cottage.
It either works or it is a great coincidence that since we started using them,
the mice went somewhere else.

Of course, YMMV

To update you on the dryer sheets, around here people use them to stop mice
moving in to their boats and all, well I was just in working on a snowmobile
groomer and it was full of dryer sheets, and as I lifted the console to check
on some wiring there was a family of 6 mice nestled in the dryer sheets! So
better find something else to use.

Practical Sailor also suggested Rosemary oil, mixed with vinegar, and squirt it
on the dock lines, They said it won’t kill the spiders, but they don’t like it
and won’t walk over it. But I couldn’t find any at Walmart.

And yes, spiders kill bugs, and so do Purple Martins, and I am happy to have
them both around doing what they do. Just so long as they don’t live and shit
on my boat. Like bats, they do their job, then go back to their caves and
Belfries.

I forgot about dryer sheets, I used to use those below, now I can’t remember if
it was for the smell or spiders . . .

And Joe, nothing brings me more joy than throwing a spider in the water, and
watching a deserving fish gobble him up!

Stus-List Re: Boric Acid Powder

2021-08-30 Thread Stephen Kidd via CnC-List
Boric acid is very effective, but the spiders have to come into direct
contact with it for it to work. I use it in the garden and it protects
against all but squirrels and neglect. Spiders may be less likely to wander
into it though.

For backpacking, I spray permethrin on shoes/pants to knock out ticks and
mosquitos. It stays around for multiple washings, so might be viable for
docklines. It says it's effective against spiders.

We've been using moth balls on board for the past couple of years. They
keep the mud daubers and spiders in check. The mud daubers eat the spiders,
but can scare people. I prefer them to spiders. There are both still
aboard, but far fewer in number.

The moth ball smell hasn't been a problem, so I haven't tried any of the
alternatives but am curious if others have had success with them.
Peppermint oil sounds nice!

Thanks, Riley, for the information. This answered my question.

Thanks

Marek

Stus-List Re: Another Solar question

2021-08-30 Thread Riley Anderson via CnC-List
Just to clarify some of the half answers posted previously:

The wires from the panels to the charge controller must be sized to handle
the short circuit current of the entire array (additive if parallel array).
Because the maximum current under normal conditions is often ~95% of short
circuit current, it is essentially impossible to fuse this side with the
industry standard 25% safety factor without having the fuse blow
prematurely under normal conditions.

The most critical fuse/breaker is on the battery side of the charge
controller as the battery bank has a much larger potential to dump high
current in a short circuit. This fuse/breaker should be mounted to the
charge bus (if available) or as close as possible to the battery.

However, it is not a bad idea to have a dual pull breaker between panel and
charge controller sized at 10-15% > short circuit current. The main purpose
of this breaker is to be able to safely disconnect the panels for
maintenance or replacement.

To the original poster:
How large is your battery bank and how old is it? Lead acid or gel? How
large is the solar panel?

Knowing these paramater can help us narrow down the likely problems.

My guess, is that the most likely cause is you had days of cloudy skies
after the hurricane and weren't getting any charge. Or your battery bank
may be small or aging and unable to accept a trickle charge anymore.
