Stus-List Baby stay vs new headsail

2021-09-01 Thread Peter McMinn via CnC-List
We’ve been sailing this summer with two exhausted composite headsails (110&125)
purchased with our 37, Sirius.

The leeches on both sails reveal a tortured past with the babystay. With a new
Precision tiradial 120 coming over winter, we’re practicing tacks with no
babystay contact, backwinding lightly to pull the sail over.

Improvement needed.

For those of you with babystays, what strategies do you employ to avoid sail
contact with the stay and/or minimizing damage?

I’ll search archives, too. Thx

Stus-List C 34r sails

2021-09-01 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Hi Chuck

Have a friend who recently bought a 34r. Who do you recommend for making sails
specifically for the 34r that knows and understands the boat when designing and
building a main sail?

I'd suggest calling a hydraulic ram repair company nearest to you. The guys
who repair dozers and backhoe rams. My local guys rebuilt my leaking Navtec
-10 system, ram and remote pump station for $35 when Navtec dealer quoted $750.
Been good for at least 5 years so far.

They are currently fogged up so bad that I can't read them. They are 3500

agree with cetol, several coats...I did 5 coats a few years back when I had
the hand rails off for rebedding which I did with butyl tape and not much
upkeep yet, just light sanding and touch up on the top surfaces so no
cutting in or scraping...I like the look of teak on these older boats
otherwise I might have gone to stainless steel hand rails

I had a problem with Rats in my shed. I sprinkled some dehydrated ghost pepper
flakes around and the problem was gone.I gave some of the same ghost pepper
flakes to a colleague who had a rat that would visit his kitchen late at night.
He sprinkled the flakes behind the stove where he believed the rat(s) were
getting in. Problem also gone, but his eye watered for days when he went to
the kitchen.

We look to be getting about 35 knots maybe and 3+ inches of rain tonight. I
happen to have my dinghy home for bottom painting and if this is like the last
big storm, I might need to tie it to a tree or it will float away.

Our house is a couple feet up on a crawlspace, so even water that high doesn’t
bother it.

Just can't seem to catch a break.  Up early this morning.  Went to start the
generator which had run out of fuel overnight so I could make coffee.  Wouldn't
run.  Had to clean the carburetor before coffee.  That's just not right.  It's

Fortunately, we have a gas stovetop.  The Admiral made coffee so I didn't screw

I don't think you folks are the only inland district.  We have a group here
that actively manages the aids to navigation on the Miss. River.  They do have
to contract out help from the Corps of Engineers on occasion.  They used to
have a large patrol boat here called the Cheyenne; don't know if that's still
true.We tend to be brown water sailors, thanks to the Muddy Missouri coming in

  Hey Richard,
My daughter serves with the Coast Guard there in Louisville so I have a
vested interest your situation there.  We visited in June and learned about the
river height and how it changes so much during the year.  One tip was seeing
the piling are higher than those seen in Maine.

I believe NOAA predicts the rise will happen Fri/Sat.  Anyway, I hope your
boat fairs well and please share photos or webcams where a guy in New Jersey
can observe this amazing event.

The Admiral and I spent a scary sleepless night listening to 50-70 mph
gusts working on the many big trees around the house. One branch took out a
couple panes of glass in the master bedroom and the top 15-20 feet of a large
oak tree in the front yard bent over but stayed in the tree. Lots of branches
in the yard this morning. Otherwise we’re okay.
Fortunately, the eye passed about 20 miles east of us so we got very little
rain.
We have no power, internet or cable.  We just got cell phone service about
an hour ago.
The water in Touche’s marina was 4.5 feet over the dock.  I have not heard
any news about Touche’ yet. The water is still high in the marina.
Our friends in New Orleans might not have been so fortunate. Hope to hear
from Ed Levert and Kevin Benoit but suspect it may be a while.  A major
electrical transmission tower blew down and left all of Orleans Parish without
power. That will not be an easy fix.
