Stus-List winter racing around the world

Winter racing:
Did anybody follow the Sidney Hobart Race?
The Golden Globe racers are passing New Zealand and about halfway round.
The Ocean Race started today from Spain and the IMOCA 60's were hitting 34
knots. Not bad for a four man monohull.

YouTube has several videos that show the boats.

Stus-List Re: TowBoatUS is it worth it?

2023-01-15 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Call your regular vessel insurance carrier. Many vessel insurance
providers offer towing reimbursement riders. It may be cheaper than a
TowBoatUS or SeaTow membership.

Ask 1) how much towing reimbursement do I currently have (I have $150.
Woefully inadequate.) and 2) do they offer a rider for additional towing
reimbursement. If they do offer a towing rider, investigate the amount and
how it works.Do they simply reimburse you if you call TowBoatUS or Sea
Tow? Do they have contracted tow providers that you must use? If so,
where are they?

If they simply reimburse you, then you may benefit from the flexibility of
being able to choose between SeaTow and TowBoatUS. An advantage in some
areas.

If you choose to go with TowBoatUS or SeaTow, investigate their services
where you cruise. Also, investigate their maximum offshore response
distance and the number and capabilities of their tow vessels. Also, ask
if they distinguish between a hard grounding and a soft grounding and which
are covered.

I see it as cheap insurance and peace of mind. I've used it once and it's
comforting to know that a tow, fuel, jump, or whatever assistance the day might
call for is only a call (or an app) away.

Sail safe,

Stus-List Re: TowBoatUS is it worth it?

To add to what was said below, TowBoatUS operates like a franchise. The one in
Erie follows the Boat US policies, but also offers expanded service for a
price. I learned this when one of my sons took our 18-foot center console out
for the afternoon and had an engine issue. The local TowBoatUS said a tow was
not covered because I was not on the boat. He added that they offer additional
coverage (as a local business, not through Boat US) that covers the entire
family, but I needed to have signed up before I had a problem.

Appreciate all the responses. After reading the emails, I did some research
and learned:

The West Marine's Advantage Gold Membership is $25/year and that provides the
initial TowBoatUS membership which is $50 off first tow, so I'd probably want
to "up" that coverage to Unlimited. That looks worthwhile.

I read the contract and learned that TowBoatUS covers the member on other
vessels, like charters and rentals and vessels on loan, but not if the vessel's
owner is aboard. Be careful if using it as a guest.

I'll probably get it for peace of mind.

Note that on my recent renewal with Boat/US there were mileage limits on the
tow depending on the level of insurance.

The old unlimited may still be available but don’t assume that your coverage
includes it——“caveat emptor” or something like that!!

OTOH, before I returned to Boat/US, my towing coverage had a $1000 deductible.
The one time I used it for a tow of about 1/8 mile (board problem had it down
in a channel into marina),

guess what the tow cost—exactly $1000!

Chuck,

unless you're going far and need a tow, it sounds like you've got your
situations covered. I've used them once, when I couldn't start the engine
after a race. Of course, I was all of 1.5 miles off shore :(

I'm now doing longer races, including Port Huron to Mackinac. A tow from
anywhere back to my home port is well worth the cost of the insurance.

Hi Guys,

Got a question for the shallow water sailors like those in Chesapeake Bay.

I'm thinking whether to buy TowBoatUS for peace of mind this coming season.
I've owned my boat for twenty years and though I do run aground a few times
each year, I always get off faily easily by backing out or spinning the keel
free.My batteries are older and I might need a jump start after anchoring
out. I keep a jumpstarter aboard for that situation and can easily check the
charge.

Are there any benefits I am missing that the membership provides? TowBoatUS
requires thirty days before benefits are effective, so February looks a good
time to join if I do.

Thanks,
