Installed a SHURflo strainer many years ago on raw water inlet. Never a
problem. Easy screw off cup, clean screen screw back on. Just screw off and
drain cup when winterizing. No special mounting is just in line in hose.
Defender $37.

If this is the Graco filter with the transparent cup, and if you winterize your
engine with the antifreeze, make sure that you drain the AF from this filter
before winter. The cup has a tendency to craze with AF left in it. Guess how I

Glen,

I installed a Groco strainer, mounted it low on the forward bulkhead in the
Lazarette under the starboard seat. Just screwed the mounting fixture to the
bulkhead and ran hoses from the thru hull to the strainer and from the strainer
to the raw water pump. I used two 90-deg bronze elbows on the outlet as it was
facing outboard to avoid a loop in the hose. It was tight but it works. I've
put in a freshwater heat exchanger so my raw water pump is on the forward end
of the engine, but with the original raw water pump the hoses should flex
enough to reach the pump. Let me know offline if you want pictures.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering whether anyone has installed a water intake filter system for
the raw water intake on an atomic 4. Specifically, the water thru haul is
pretty close to the water pump hook up and any filter that is not an inline
filter would require some right angles on the plumbing.

Thanks.

Had my air conditioner intake plug a few times when in a slip in a
stagnant corner of a marina where trash accumulated. Things stuck in the
elbow on top of the thru hull. I have a tee with garden hose hookup and a
valve on the discharge so I can blow it out.

Contributory to the problem was it was a street elbow. I have since
switched it to a long elbow. Like your situation, the boat was not moving.

Thanks Dave and Joel for your suggestions—easy to check with multimeter or

I can’t remember how long it’s been since I replaced the pump/switch so I doubt
it’s the wiring which has been securely zip-tied to my centerboard pennant
‘tube’ for the same unknown years.

If there IS infinite resistance, then close the switch.   You should see the

My thought is to just replace the pump and see if that does it—I have an

Other suggestions from listers are welcome.

Interesting discussion. The only time I have had my raw water intake plugged
was when I ran the engine in a grassy area while at anchor. In that case, the
grass plugged up the through hull and never got to the strainer. The admiral
dived down and cleared it by hand by pulling the weeds out. I don't think that
could happen when motoring or at least it hasn't yet. I am much more careful
now running the engine when there is seaweed or grass floating around,

The strainer is a Perko. Mine has a short glass, not the standard length.
With a standard glass, it would be too tall.

I would be interested in the pictures as well. I have parts but haven't
pulled the trigger on creative A4 intake plumbing yet.

I installed Groco filters on my 34 and 42 Custom. Better than sucking a
plastic bag or weeds into your system.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering whether anyone has installed a water intake filter system for
the raw water intake on an atomic 4. Specifically, the water thru haul is
pretty close to the water pump hook up and any filter that is not an inline
filter would require some right angles on the plumbing.

Thanks.

Stus-List Re: Bilge pump breaker issue

2024-04-08 Thread Dave S via CnC-List
Use a multimeter to measure resistance, +12v to  ground, from the load (pump) side of the breaker, with the breaker open, and the float switch open.   It should show infinite resistance.  If it shows very low or no resistance, you have a short.  Disconnect the pump/switch.    If the problem persists, it’s not the pump, it’s the wiring.  If there IS infinite resistance, then close the switch.   You should see the motor’s resistance.  If you see zero resistance, the Pump has likely developed a short.  Change the pump.  Similarly, You can also disconnect the pump, and measure the wiring and the pump’s resistance separately.  Same idea.  Dave Ex 33-2 Sent from my iPhoneOn Apr 7, 2024, at 10:09 PM, cenelson--- via CnC-List wrote:

When you cut the wires for the pump, turn on the switch. If there is a
short in the wires the breaker will trip. Otherwise it is the pump.

My boat seams to have had one from previous owner. Just remember to drain it
