Stus-List Re: Racor 500MA question

2024-04-26 Thread David Knecht via CnC-List
A bit off topic, but related as long as we are talking about clogged Racors.
When I installed a Racor 500 on my boat last year, I added an Across Ocean
Systems (AOS) fuel pressure sensor on the intake line between the Racor and the
tank. It sends the data to my Raymarine chartplotter over Seatalk ng and so I
can see the pressure at the helm. I had to tweak the settings because it
reports negative pressure and the Raymarine can't display that, but by putting
in an offset, it now reports 5 psi normally and as that approaches zero it
means the filter is getting clogged. I am very happy with the result because
getting a visual on the standard gauge on top of the Racor is a PITA on my
boat. Dave

2024-04-26 Thread cenelson--- via CnC-List
Aside from replacing the Racor filter regularly, I think it’s a good idea to
drain the bowl when you change the filter.
I usually change this filter yearly when I change the fuel filters on my Beta
28.But it is possible for gunk to build up in the bowl which is mostly
transparent but can cause fuel issues.
I discovered this during a ‘fuel adventure’ a few years ago when I was
investigating repeated engine stalls during a long motoring from Ocracoke back
to Oriental.
I tried to drain the bowl (with the top off and filter out) and nothing came
out the drain. Only after I plunged a screwdriver up thru the clogged drain did
I get it to drain. The clog was apparently just congealed fuel/dirt but you
could not see it thru the clear bowl since it was mostly transparent and was
not obvious compared to the diesel fuel color.
FWIW, I now at least check that fuel will flow out the drain during a filter
change.

Stus-List Racor 500MA question

2024-04-26 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Touche' has a Racor 500MA with the Racor vacuum gauge in place of the
T-handle. See:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Pe9zcl-E0aQRl-Cu9cW8VqpeLEo9Gek3/view?usp=sharing

During a cruise to the Mississippi Coast last week, the needle sneaked into
the red. It's done this before. Bleeding it by lifting the little rubber
seal on top will reset it to the white zone. It gradually sneaks back into
the red zone. I don't believe the element is becoming blinded.

However, I decided to change the element anyway after only 50 hours. The
element looked very clean.

The gauge is still behaving the same with the brand new element.

I have no reason to suspect pluggage in the pickup tube. Touche's fuel has
always been very, very clean. But I'll check it anyway.

Internet research has pointed me towards the ball check valve in the
Racor. Here's a schematic:

https://www.maesco.com/products/racor/r_tbn_intro/r_tbn_assm500ma/r_tbn_assm500ma.html

My question - has any lister taken a 500MA apart and examined the check
valve? If so, what did you find?

I will be on the boat next week exploring the fuel system and all the usual
suspect causes upstream of the Racor.

Stus-List Re: Mast step fun

2024-04-26 Thread Nathan Post via CnC-List
That does sound like a challenging project Matt. Interesting that your mast
step bent - my casting cracked in two around the keel bolt. However I
don't have the stringer setup you do - it looks like it is just solid
fiberglass with filler under the mast on my 34.

Not the same part but I just designed a replacement mast step for my C 34
and had it machined from 6061 T6 aluminum by xometry. Photo of finished
part: https://photos.app.goo.gl/8GVyzAsBASdW8MuP7 It was about $700
including shipping (made in the US) which wasn't too bad as a one-off. The
design is here in on-shape if anyone wants to copy it:
https://cad.onshape.com/documents/06778e11eadafc92b785b709/w/b7bc0fda88594aa1bd5a947b/e/dbcde4431b1a8f7be673194e

It is based closely on the original casting dimensions but designed so that
it will not collect water anywhere. I figure out of 6061 it will be
stronger than the original casting (which had cracked) and should last
another 40+ years if I bed it properly with filled epoxy so that it doesn't
have large bending loads applied.

Hey Listers,

Our 36-1 has had mystery leak since we owned her, and it only shows up in heavy
rain. On the port side main cabin water is coming down the enclosed molded
ceiling headliner that butts against the forward teak bulkhead just forward of
the chainplates. It is a completely in accessible so short of starting to cut
apart the ceiling I cannot find the source. So far, I have:

   - Removed and rebedded the chainplates, though it is not coming from that
area it is above and forward.
   - New handrails and re-cored deck where wet. Have access to all fasteners
and they are dry.
   - Removed all winches etc around mast area, ran all lines back and redid
decks.
   - Rebedded mast collar where it meets the deck.
   - Resealed around the bulkhead stainless tang that has the small stainless
plate on deck.

So, my only two intrusions that are in that area are the mast itself and the
above mentioned stainless tab. Somehow water finds a pathway in the enclosed
ceiling and dumps right into the port side shelf. If my wife happens to be
sleeping in that berth at the time you can guess what happens next. With all
the heavy rain last year it was constantly wet.

What I have not done is to add more sealant to the deck fasteners that hold the
mast collar in, but they look well sealed. I think I am going to remove the
tang plate completely and redo that. Will double up on the mast bedding at the
deck seam and the fasteners. Any suggestions are welcomed!
