Beemer survived the hurricane. With no damage other than covered with pine
needles. Five boat were not removed from the marina. Three sailboats and two
sport fishers. Two sailboat broke away from their slips. One ended up sunk
against the sea wall, mast sticking straight up and headsail flailing in the
wind. The other a 43' ketch also broke away from her slip and ended 3/4 miles
away laying on her side on the beach. A 10' gash at the waterline. The
remaining boat appear unaffected. All will receive immediate eviction notices.
The marina is closed. A meeting will be held by the city tomorrow morning to
assess damage and determine when the marina will reopen officially. The
commercial fishing boats were returning this afternoon to the commercial
harbor.. And I was told I could return to the marina tomorrow knowing there's
no power and scattered debris everywhere.
It helps when you know people.

Golden Nugget in Biloxi had four feet of water in lower level garage which mean
marina docks were 6' minimum under water.
Curfew till 9AM. Still waiting to hear how Beemer did.

Stus-List Gotta Love These Hurricanes

2017-10-07 Thread Bob Caughran via CnC-List
So here's how my last 3 days have gone. On Thursday a fellow sailor from my
marina in Biloxi called to let me know they were considering closing the marina
for Nate. I packed up my car and headed down to Biloxi yesterday morning.
Sunshine, 82 degrees and 12-15 knots from the east. I arrive to find three
sailing buddies prepping their boats and waiting for me to lead them to the
hurricane hole none of us have been to before.
I add five gallons of fuel to Beemer, C, the harbor master helps us get
off the docks and off we go at 1:30PM. It's a six to seven mile trek into
biloxi bay and up the biloxi river.
Two miles into the excursion going under the I110 bridge, I hear a different
sound from the exhaust. I look down behind and see no water coming from the
exhaust. I turn on the autopilot and run down and check the front of the engine
to find the belt and pully laying under the engine. The hub of the pully still
on the water pump.
No overtemp alarm or light. Secondary cooling apparently keeping the temps from
alarming. A mile later, bilge pump starts firing off. Back down to investigate.
Hot water pressure release going off.
Time to power down and toss line to friends boat to continue under toe.
Now as I said earlier, none of us have ever been to these protected waters. We
find one cove and one sailboat attempts to enter. 20' 17' 5' turn around.. As
we approach the I10 bridge (too low for us to go under) we spot a secluded cove
with two sailboats inside. We go inside and 20' depths throughout. Three boats
raft up setting three anchors. Lash to each other and seven lines going to
trees ashore.
Although you never feel you're secure enough to leave her, we jump in the dink
at 12:30AM and motor to the pick up point where one of the wives returns us to
the marina to get our cars. Done and exhausted at 2AM.
This morning, get up, off to the chandlery, no pully. Ok. West marine, no pully
but they suggest Tractor Supply Company. Sure enough they got it. Yeah.
Jump in car and haul butt up to Hattiesburg to hole myself up till Nate passes
thru.
If the marina opens on Monday we will head back get the boats, if they're still
floating, and head back to the marina.
Special note: if the marina call for evacuation and you do not evacuate, they
will sink your boat in the slip.

Thanks Dennis. Planning to anchor in pelican bay on the SE end of Dauphin
Island first night. You remember meeting Bill when you were last in Biloxi ?
He and his wife are who will be joining me.
All the docs you made available are accessible. I will peruse them.
Will be using inavx on my iPad. CP is on the birthday wish. Downloaded the
Waterway Guide for the South.
We're going last week or march as the plan goes.
My wife will be at her daughters for two and a half weeks so I'll have plenty
of time on Beemer. Might have to make a Ponchatraine trip the second week.
Will be good to see you again.

Stus-List Prepping For First Cruise

2017-02-25 Thread Bob Caughran via CnC-List
First let me apologize. I do get carried away writing at times.
Until Beemer, 29mkII, was moved down to Biloxi 14 months ago, she had been a
lake boat for ten years, day sailing and spending weekends in the marina,
racing around the cans.
Sailing on a friends 48' Tayana occasionally over the last seven years in the
Gulf spoiled me to the joys of cruising to destinations and point to point
distance races. Have sailed from Corpus Christi all along the Gulf to Key West
on that big beautiful yacht.
I remember the first time I sailed Beemer out into the gulf, out of the
protection of Deer Island. Single handed, I headed out. The winds were 10-12
out of the south in the marina. I threw the 105 on deck and rigged the first
reef. Figuring I'm by myself, better to be prudent. A little chop in the bay as
I motored west to open water. Most of you can guess what happened when I
cleared Deer Island. Yep, bam!! 16-25 knots and 4' seas. Of course, Beemer was
getting tossed around. Got the main up and the 105 and Beemer put her ear down
and took off. Dang, she's a good lil boat.
Since moving her to Biloxi, it's been mostly day sails, occasional overnight
anchoring on the barrier islands, and tons of working on her, setting her up to
cruise.
Next month, my sailing/racing buddy, his wife and myself are heading out on a
week cruise to Pensacola, 100 miles away. We will do fairly short days, 20-40
miles. Stop and enjoy ourselves going and coming. Anchoring here, marina there.
Since most of the time I'm by myself, having to plan all the extra stuff,
blankets, towels, food for three has been fun. My wife went out and bought a
new quilt for the v-berth and new towels. Guess my older towels and blankets
aren't good enough for guests. LOL. They both use CPAP machines at night.
Still working that electrical requirement. And although his wife loves
sailing, she is rather frail, so have to really watch weather so not to bounce
her around too much. We will probably spend a fair bit of time on the ICW, at
least heading east into the prevailing winds. The return should be outside,
downwind run.
Anyways, just thought I'd share my little plan for my first cruise.
Oh yes, for any of you southerners, I'll always accept suggestions for
anchorages or marinas between Orange Beach and Ft Walton Beach. That means you
too Dennis.

Re: Stus-List C Spinnaker

2016-11-20 Thread Bob Caughran via CnC-List
Hi John,
My 29-2 is rigged for symmetric spinnaker. She has a topping lift, down haul,
and halyard all run aft to the cockpit. Sheet blocks all the way aft attaching
to the back stay mounting plate (transom corner casting). Snatch blocks mounted
mid ship. Sheets run to forward coming winches.
The downhaul setup has a block attacted to a padeye on deck 1/3 way between
forward hatch and the bow. Also four fairleads routing the downhaul up
starboard side of cabin and terminates next to the companion way hatch with a
cam cleat.
Actually works well for cruising. I single hand her fairly often in light air
flying the chute. If racing, I have the halyard terminate at the mast.
I can take pictures of any details you'd like next weekend when I'm back down
on Beemer.

Re: Stus-List Circuit Breaker Panels for 1981 C 36

2016-07-14 Thread Bob Caughran via CnC-List
I recently replaced the 30A main breaker on my 29mkII. Pulled it ran down to
west marine, compared it to what they had. Found one that was basically the
same except different screw size for wire terminal lugs. Changed lugs on the
wires and installed. Took far longer to drive to west marine than it did
removal and installation.

Hi Gene
On Beemer my electric bilge with float switch uses one inch hose that is routed
directly aft then up and exits just aft of the starboard bulkhead in cockpit
locker two inches below the rub rail.

Re: Stus-List Stay Shroud Tension

2016-05-09 Thread Bob Caughran via CnC-List
Chris,
I do not use a Loos gage on Beemer, 29mkll, to tune my rig. My process is as
follows.
With all stays and shrouds lose, I tension the stays so I have approximately 9
inches rake along the boom using a weight on the main halyard. Forestay first,
then backstay to remove slop. I them tension the upper shrouds to hand tight
and using the main halyard on the toe rails to align the masthead. I then add
two turns to the turnbuckles. Check masthead alignment again.
Once all aligned, I tighten the lowers hand tight. Sight the mast to ensure
straight. Add two turns to each lower. Sight the mast.
Time for on the water final tune. In roughly 10-12 knots of wind on beem reach,
look at leeward shrouds for play. Removed a third of the play tightening the
leeward turnbuckles. Count and remember the number of turns. Tack boat. Tighten
leeward turnbuckle same Number of turns as previous tack.
And I tack back and forth checking and making any final adjustments. You'll
want the slop out of the leeward shrouds.
Sounds like a long process but it really isn't.
Is using s Loos gage quicker? Yes but I'm a cheap son of a gun. And even with a
Loos gage you'll still occasional on water adjustments.

Re: Stus-List Head Plumbing

2016-04-19 Thread Bob Caughran via CnC-List
On Beemer I have a thru hull and seacock under the sink that feeds the head.
Was fine in lakes but now with seawater it's less than my liking. Always had to
have seacock closed as would overflow the head on a port tack.
I plan to plumb from onboard water supply this spring. They have a kit if I
plumb from
Pressure water side of sink in head. Currently leave the head on dry and pour
from cup on the sink. Works fine and no odors.

Re: Stus-List stuffing box

2016-04-01 Thread Bob Caughran via CnC-List
Bev,
So fun going by memory. When I splashed Beemer in December, I had a wonderful
stream of water from my stuffing box. Unscrewed and added one loop of packing.
All dry after. 90% certain it was 3/8 thick.
As Russ mentioned, other than a stream of water (not bad), easy to do while
boat is in the water.

Hi Eugene,
Welcome to the group. I have an 83 Mk II. Been out in 30-35 knots and 5-6'
seas. She's no 40 footer, but she actually handles it pretty well. You might
get a bit wet though without a dodger. As for the spreaders, mine has a bracket
that wraps the mast with studs that the spreaders slide over. A 3/8", I
believe, pin with cotter pins on both sides of the pin secure it to the mast.
It is much stronger than many like Size boats same vintage.

I have a friend with a new-to-her 1983 CC 29-2, hull number 208. The hull
number seems sort of odd since sailboatdata.com shows production from 1983 to
1986.

Can anyone confirm the dates of production and tell us how many were built?

Also, last week there was mention of a closed Facebook page/forum for 29-2
owners. How would she go about finding it and joining?
