Stus-List Material choice & Sources for clear hatch boards

2024-05-29 Thread Karl Kuzis via CnC-List
Good day all,

*FIREFLY *is in need of a hatch board upgrade from her one piece solid wood
slab.
Looking to move back to a 3 part style with (at least) 1 part made of a
clear(ish) plastic.

The question to the group is who has used what type of plastic and how have
they held up.
(Plexiglass vs lexan vs ?)

And associated, who has a good source for the material ?

I have the ability to shape / cut / etc so I don't need a finished product,
simply raw stock material.
Thanks in advance for the input!

Respectfully, Karl

I would be interested in the pictures as well. I have parts but haven't
pulled the trigger on creative A4 intake plumbing yet.

Stus-List Any thoughts (experience) on trailering?

2023-09-13 Thread Karl Kuzis via CnC-List
Looking at Richard's photos from moving his 34cb to the shop got me
thinking.

Firefly is a C 29 Mk1 with extended keel which is lake locked 3 hrs away.
We have been considering moving her closer to home, back to the Columbia
River. As previously mentioned she is due for hull paint (or wrap) as well
as bottom inspection, paint etc.

So the choices become hire a boat mover, or obtain a suitable trailer
(rental or buy). I have plenty of trailer-tow experience just not with a
29ft fixed keel sailboat.

The question to the group is: Any insights, experience or thoughts on 29
trailering?

All comments, stories and discussion welcome!

Stus-List Re: Hull painting

2023-08-23 Thread Karl Kuzis via CnC-List
The reviews I have seen on YouTube for cruising boats seem positive.
Lifespan 10+ years, straight forward patch and repair and peel off removal.

Being a traditionalist, I had been hesitant to consider wraps but am
digging deeper as the pros seem to outweigh the cons, esp here in N. Idaho
where painters and working yards are sparce but there are vehicle wrappers
who have some boat wrapping experience. (Fred don't judge us, it's a BIG
lake).

Still weighing options as we are a couple of years (unless an option
becomes obvious)

Another random idea

Could you consider a vinyl wrap?

Firefly has the Red paint job from 1977ish and is umm showing her age.
So while looking at painting we also started looking at options.
The vinyl wrap is about half the paint cost and decent life span and
repairable.

For us, either is a couple of years off but does the group have any input
or experience?

Stus-List Engine strangeness x 2

2023-06-12 Thread Karl Kuzis via CnC-List
Since we are on stories of oddness I have 2.

First, when cruising along at modest rpm, will have a sudden shut down.
Just off. No change in sound, smell, rpm, etc just as if ignition switch
cut out. Suspecting a loose connection I proofed all wires / connections
and we'll test it out cruising around next week. Any odd ideas to keep in
mind?

Second, episodically when motoring at higher rpm close to hull speed will
have a sudden racing of the engine with loss of power. Pull back throttle,
and goes back to normal but not unusual to reoccur. Haven't noticed it at
lower speed or rpm.
I'm suspicious of cavitation but haven't thought it thru as to causes,
tests of theory, remedies or other options. Thoughts?

C 29 Mark 1 with a recently rebuilt Atomic 4 and 2 bade folding prop.

Stus-List Re: Tuning questions - now Loos gauge accuracy

2022-10-21 Thread Karl Kuzis via CnC-List
Thanks for all the input!

Two comments this morning.
1 The cncphotoalbum site appears down, anyone have insight? or a copy of
the tuning article?

2 In some boats (thinking cal 20) leaving lowers loose and uppers just snug
allowed the rig to bend to leeward and actually improve upwind speed
without poor pointing. Not sure how the aerodynamics of all that works but
sure helped racing. Most of the cal 20 race crews actually removed the aft
lowers.

as we aren't racing our CnC29 I'm tuning for safety and somewhat
performance so all input is still welcome!

Stus-List C 29 Mk1 tuning questions

2022-10-15 Thread Karl Kuzis via CnC-List
Hello all,

We are new owners of Hull#45 "Firefly" and I am interested in hearing if
any one has a set of starting rig tension measurements you could share.

Loos Gauge numbers would be great.

Just replaced the headstay due to wire damage I found under the foil.
(Wanted to avoid burying bad wire under the new roller furling). Now
working on retuning the rig.

All insight and experience sharing welcome!
