Had a chance to take some videos of the sail pack operation. I'll try to
get some of the main going up and down but it is a bit of chaos with only 2
people.

Re: Stus-List Anyone Have A Stack Pack?

2018-05-17 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
Our cover attaches to the sides of the boom.

Questions & Answers:

(1) should the cover be fully up when dropping the sail or eased? Ours is
fully up.

(2) what kind of extension or line do people use on the zipper car? We have
a rope about 3' long attached to the zipper pull so we can reach across the
dodger, etc.

(3) is it typical to have to "stuff" the sail into the cover before
zipping? Or is my problem just a new stiff sail? A stiff new sail is
definitely part of the problem, but we do have to pull back a bit on the
main in a few places to get it to drop into the cradle a bit more sometimes.

(4) can the mast cover be left in place when sailing, dropping the sail?
We don't but our design is a bit different than yours as leaving this cover
in place would make raising the main impossible.

(5) is it better to let the sail drop quickly - letting go of the halyard -
or easing it down? Ours works best if we drop it all at once, and even
better if it is flapping a bit as it falls.

This is what our cover looks like when the jack lines are brought to the
mast (usually to the horns but not in this photo) and the cover is rolled
up along the side of the boom and fastened down with the little straps
built in for this. We only do this if we will be out for hours.

Re: Stus-List Anyone Have A Stack Pack?

2018-05-17 Thread William Hall via CnC-List
When I got my boat 5-6 years ago, it had a stack pack already. I really
like it and have just taken it in to have the cover reworked. They
recommended switching to the cradle cover arrangement you have (mine is/was
the older version where the sail has the bolt rope and the cover is sewn to
the sail).
What works for me is:
1) I have the cover up all the way when dropping the sail
2) I have a hunk of rope about 6-8' long on the zipper. When opened up and
sailing, the rope goes into a little velcro-closed bag on the boom so it
doesn't whack anybody.
3) With my nice old comfy bedsheets of a sail, it requires very little
stuffing. Usually just a tad at the mast where the last couple cars
sometimes hang up or bunch on the sail.
4) Yes, I leave the cover on unless I am using the spinnaker pole
5) Drop the halyard as quickly as you can, making sure it's free to run.
Momentum really helps once most of the way down. If the halyard gets stuck
on something it takes a little more stuffing / pulling to get the sail down
the last 5-10 feet.

I hope you figure out something and can make it work with your stiff main!

Re: Stus-List Anyone Have A Stack Pack?

2018-05-17 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
(1) should the cover be fully up when dropping the sail or eased?

 - I have found a medium tension that facilitates opening and catching the
sail, zipping closed, and supporting the sail on the boom while zipped.

(2) what kind of extension or line do people use on the zipper car? There's
a you tube video of a continuous line zipper trolley that looks good but no
info on how it's rigged.

 - The aft end if the pack is supported by the topping lift. Lashed to the
topping lift is a micro block. The forward end of the pack is supported on
either side of the mast by a pad eye and a soft shackle. In the bite of
the shackle is another micro block. A 1/4 inch line twice the length of
the boom is routed from the zipper pull forward inside the jacks along the
path of the zipper to the forward micro block, back outside the jacks along
the length of the boom to the aft micro block and then inside the jacks and
finished off at the zipper pull.

(3) is it typical to have to "stuff" the sail into the cover before
zipping? Or is my problem just a new stiff sail?

 - I have to work the flakes down a bit at the mast end and then pull the
flakes aft to get them to lay flat. Its not so much a stuffing action but
a quick straightening. And it is in no way shape or form "properly
flaked". Each time the lay of the sail is probably a little different.
Without the sail pack it would look disheveled but it actually prevents
wear creases from forming in the repeated folds.

(4) can the mast cover be left in place when sailing, dropping the sail?

 - I don't know what design of mast cover you have but mine cannot be left
on. I suggest removing your to prevent flogging and chafe

(5) is it better to let the sail drop quickly - letting go of the halyard -
or easing it down?

 - I have my zipper pull system on the port side so we come into the wind
and then just a few degrees off to port. This blows the sail to
starboard. The sail is dropped quickly and is guided by the stbd jacks.
This all helps prevent the zipper pull l8ne from being buried by the sail
flakes. I still have to dig it out a little but not too much and it is all
done as part of the before mentioned straightening up if the flakes.

(6) any other helpful hints would be appreciated.
 - All of this operation is considerably facilitated by the jacks being
attached to the second spreader (higher gets jack support further aft) and
about 12 - 18 inches away from the mast (wider gets the mouth open).

2018-05-17 Thread Tony Wroblewski via CnC-List
I am new to the stack pack family - just installed this week. Ours is a Doyle
Cradle Cover (Doyle Stack Pack not attached to the sail). Mast had a Tides
track. The sail is also new a North 3Di and very stiff. I could use any tips
on handling this system because I'm having trouble getting the sail into the
cover enough to zip it up. Zipper and top of cover is approx. 8' above the
deck at the mast. Very hard to reach especially over the cockpit. Have 1 step
at the mast but still feel like Tarzan swinging from a vine when putting the
sail in. It would probably help if I were 7' tall!

Questions:

(1) should the cover be fully up when dropping the sail or eased?

(2) what kind of extension or line do people use on the zipper car? There's a
you tube video of a continuous line zipper trolley that looks good but no info

we have added some - pictures once the boat is put together, she splashed

This is what our main looks like after just dropping it, without taking any
time to zip the cover shut or to put the separate front cover on (similar
to Josh's setup).

This is what it looks like zipped up and with the front cover on as well:

Re: Stus-List Anyone Have A Stack Pack?

2018-05-16 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I have a sail pack custom made by my sail maker - Clark McKinney at Quantum
Sails in Solomons, MD. It makes packing the sail quite simple but be
warned, the boom height can still make zipping the pack and flaking down
the sail a bit awkward. I shopped around to various sail makers and off
the shelf products and finally decided on the customizations afforded by
using a local canvas maker. Had I done it myself with the existing lazy
jacks my lead would have come off the mast too low and too narrow. I have
a tides marine strong track with 5 battons so the stack height had to be
carefully accounted for.

I was also involved with the design of the forward part of the pack cover.
Some have a large flap that wraps around the front of the mast and zips
into the opposite side. I didn't like the unanswerable question of what
happens to this flap during the sail? Another design option (better but
not great) is to have the flap unzip on both sides of the pack allowing it
to be removed completely during sail use. I was concerned about potential
chafe of the zippers on the sail and mast. The sail maker took my
suggestion and built a short sail cover. It works like a normal cover and
goes on top of the closed sail pack, its just short. It extends about 2 or
3 feet down the boom. It finishes off and protects the leading edge of the
pack and sail and also protects the head board of the sail.

Since then the same sailmaker has further experimented and has developed a
schrunchie elasticated area that automatically closes the leading edge of
the pack with no other action required by the user.

Get with me off list and I can provide pictures, costs, and contact info.

Re: Stus-List Anyone Have A Stack Pack?

2018-05-16 Thread bwhitmore via CnC-List
I agree with everyon here.  I put mine on a year ago when the 37/40+ had a main
cover that needed immediate replacement.  It not only makes the main really
easy to reply and zip back up (eliminating flaking, tyingand putting on the
cover), the sail drops onto it.  I added one othe thing to address Dan's
concern - a downhaul on the main.  This way I can pull it all the way into the
pack.  I had an extra clutch  so between that, a block and a couple bullet
blocks, it was done.
Best upgrade so far!

Pegathy has a stack pack made by Chesapeake sailmakers. It's wonderful. Head to
wind, drop the main, zip it up.

Well, not quite that easy, usually have to push the sail of the top edge of the
pack and inside, but close.
The front comes off and the pack can be lashed to the boom for racing, with the
jacks tied along the mast for minimal windage. This requires a loose foot main.
One of the most beneficial improvements I've made to the boat.

Mike,

Thanks. I don’t race the Enterprise any more (can’t fit any more trophies in
the case) and now only use her for day sailing and cruising.

I didn’t raise the main once last year simply because it’s such a PITA to flake
and tie up when dropping the sail, especially when it’s just two of us on
board.
