Re: Stus-List Battery Monitor

2018-06-16 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Josh,

First of all, the previous owner did a piece-of-shunt job (see what I did
there?) with the wiring. It’s a mess. And, as such, I’m not getting accurate
readings. I thought I’d do a rewire, but wiring diagrams for this thing are
really hard to find (I found one scan on Google, but it was faded and had fold
lines.)

Also, the manual looks to be written for electrical engineers — not my forte at
all. And I’d like to be able to program the thing without bringing aboard a
scientific calculator, an abacus, and my MacBook Pro.

The new ones are far simpler — and has one screen which will show voltage, a
graphic meter of power remaining, charge in/charge out, etc. And all I need to
enter is the rated Ah of the batteries.

I also like the the M2 unit has the ability to add an alarm so that when you
drop to a user-set number, like 30%-40% (Though I'd never go below 50%), you
know you better get a charge going ASAP.

And so, Link2000, you are the weakest link. Goodbye.

All the best,

Edd

Hi Brad,

Here are photos from my shunt installed on the forward bulkhead as you
mentioned as well as the general arrangement in the compartment.

Question: Does your setup have three batteries and if so what are their
sizes and locations? I would like to add a third battery and I'm not sure
where to put it.

Slightly off-topic but battery monitor related, after sailing off Croatia last
summer I decided to buy one of these
<https://www.panbo.com/simarine-pico-good-ideas-in-battery-monitoring-more/>
No support in the U.S. but I’m always up for something new. I replaced my Link
20 with this unit. It has a 24-hour barograph, tank monitor, ambient
temperature in addition to monitoring 2 battery banks. It has bluetooth so I
can monitor with it’s app on my iPhone.

Looks trick if nothing else. ;-)

And FWIW, the shunt is placed behind the distribution panel.

Re: Stus-List Battery monitor shunt location

2018-06-11 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Edd,

As you mentioned the load is so small. I believe that it is insignificant
to justify the cost and time of adding even just a simple switch. That
being said, like nearly all electronic devices, the Link2000 has a power
supply (+ and -). Put a switch in line with the + and presto you have a
means for turning it off. The advantage of leaving it on is that it will
continue to monitor current draw from things like the bilge pump, led
anchor light, radio memory, and cigarette lighter accessories.
Individually these are also insignificant but overtime they may accumulate
a surprisingly large number of amp hours which would go unmonitored without
the Link 2000 (or other battery monitor being on. Even the draw of the
Link 2000 should be being monitored assuming it is on and wired correctly.

For anybody looking for a cheap solution check out the DROK products on
Amazon. I've been extremely impressed with the price, quality, and
functionality. For loads less than 20 amps they have a modle with an
integrated shunt. For greater than 20 amps you'll need to make sure to
plan for a shunt (always on the ground).

Re: Stus-List Battery monitor shunt location

2018-06-11 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
All,

I’ve been following this thread as my PO-installed Link 2000 just isn’t working
great and I’m considering a replacement.

Perhaps I’m weird in this regard, but I’m not a fan of having any kind of load
on the batteries overnight when I leave the boat. And I know these monitors
have a constant load on the battery, albeit a small one. Nevertheless, has
anyone connected one of these to a switch so you can see readings on demand
(and not all the time)? Or does that make it all not work properly?

All the best,

Edd

both sides of it and has worked out really well.

No problems since installing it. I got the Bluetooth dongle for the Victron and
can check the battery stats from the cockpit easily. Eventually, I surface
mounted the Victron display just under the VHF beside the fuse panel above the
nav table.

This page is very useful and I utilized its previous version (on pbase) for my

I recently purchased a Victron battery monitor and am wondering where others,
particularly 36' owners, have mounted their battery monitor shunts, if they
have one?

Many thanks,

Re: Stus-List Battery monitor shunt location

2018-06-11 Thread Brad Crawford via CnC-List
Nice write up. Yeah space is limited, my batteries are located under the
quarter berth and there is a small amount of unused space next to the battery
box on the bulkhead separating the storage compartment behind the battery
compartment. I think I’ll be able to mount a negative buss bar also.

Thanks for sharing,

Brad

The starter battery is on the other side under the sink. So the location makes
it easy to run the sensor wires to both banks.

We are happy with it.

Re: Stus-List Battery monitor shunt location

2018-06-09 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
The shunt should always be installed on the ground as near to the battery
terminal as possible. NO OTHER connections should be attached to the
terminal. ALL LOADS need to be attached to shunt (the side of the shunt
that is not attached to the battery terminal). All this being said, there
is no good reason not to have the shunt in the battery compartment and even
on/attached to the battery. Keeping it there ensures future installations
don't inadvertently get attached directly to the battery terminal.
