If his mast is anything like the one in my 35 MKII, lots of thickness
to drill and tap, that's the way to go and since it's likely a
permanent install drill tap and use bolts, 1/4 20 stainless, 3/4 inch
long should do fine

1/4" stainless steel with stainless steel mandrel pop rivets have a tensile
strength up to 2000 lbs.

Even an aluminum / aluminum rivet is fairly strong at up to 890 lbs.

I doubt there is any advantage to using a rivet unless the wall thickness of
the mast only allows
a couple of full threads to catch. With thinner section sizes a rivet may have

Stus-List Boom vanging... Rigid vs Boomkicker

2016-01-29 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
I think that on larger boats the rigid vangs are preferred but on the smaller
boats perhaps the Boomkicker is a better option. Our 33 has an original
equipment rigid vang (1987) that I think is Harken. Works well after many
years and we have no complaints. On our J27 we added a US Spars rigid vang
rather than a boomkicker. Most J27 opt for the boomkicker in addition to rope
vang. I was not all that happy with the US Spars rigid vang on the 27 and the
other 27 owners all liked their boom kickers.

Those are only my opinions based on personal observations

Gee, Chuck

I guess there are a few folks on the list that like Garhauer vangs. :). I put
one on Touche' in 1999. Still looks good and works great. Highly recommend
one.

I've installed a few Garhauer vangs on other boats and have always had good
experiences with their support.

I installed a Boomkicker on a J30 several months ago and have a positive
opinion of that product also.

If it helps your decision, I have sold several rope vangs on eBay. Price ranges
from about $45 to $90 depending on size and condition.

Re: Stus-List Boom vanging...

2016-01-29 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Chuck,

Plus 2 for Garhauer. I have a Garhauer vang on each of my boats. One is over
20 years old, the other 13. Strong. Custom fit to the boat. And really great
customer service from Guido and Mark. You won't find a better value or
anything that works better. I commend your decision to do away with the
"Damned thang", which I always found to be a general PITA .

Neil,

You are correct that the Boomkicker is less expensive. The K1500 that Chuck
would need would be around $300. The Garhauer just under $500. He would
still need his soft vang. Installation could be pretty straightforward,
unless the existing mast and boom tangs for the soft vang interfere with the
mounting of the hardware for the Boomkicker.

That said, my reservation about the Boomkicker is that I have seen, on 5 or
6 occasions over the years, the top of the Boomkicker rod come unpinned from
its mounting. When that happens, the boom ends up in the cockpit when you
drop the sails. That's probably a result of inattention or poor maintenance
on the part of the boat owner, I admit, and certainly the owner of a classic
C will pay better attention to his boat than the average owner. But still.

Peter,

I agree with Bill's suggestion that you contact Garhauer for new springs if
you think your vang has too much lift in it - though I suspect the weight of
a boom and sails for a 30-1 isn't all that much heavier than those on a 27.
I suspect you will find it is pretty inexpensive and relatively easy to make
the change.

A few years ago I had to put a new mast on my 25 (long story about an
inattentive skipper). When I called Garhauer about the installation of the
vang on the new mast, Guido asked me what model vang I had and what profile
Kenyon mast I was installing. He sent me a lower mounting bracket for the
new mast and the cost was less than $50. I mentioned that I had some slop in
the upper mounting , where the tang on the boom was mounted into the top of
the rigid vang, that was probably due to the fact that I had the original
roller furling boom on the boat. He sent me a new set of spacers to correct
the problem at no charge. As I said, great customer service.

you could keep your manual vang, would cost quite a bit less. I'm happy

I was told by numerous sources that if you want pop rivets, you need to use the
stainless steel ones. They are more difficult to find and even more difficult
to use (you need a decent river gun)m but they might be an option.

Like others have said, either stainless rivets or drill and tap and coat
threads with Tef Gel. If you don't have a Big Daddy rivet tool, you're
left with drill and tap. A home type rivet tool can handle aluminum rivets
but will struggle with 1/4 inch SS rivets. If it doesn't complete the
pull, you'll have to drill it out and try it again.

Believe me, I've done enough installs to know.

If all you want to do is get rid of the topping lift, you might consider
just adding a Boomkicker, which only keeps the boom from falling down.
Then you could keep your manual vang, would cost quite a bit less. I'm
happy with that arrangement, though I always put my main halyard on the
end of the boom once the main is down in case someone decides to swing
on the boom or something like that.

Chuck,
I installed a Garhauer RV20-1SL several years ago now. I have an Offshore rig
so the mast and boom already had the needed brackets for mounting. You will
want to ask for the strong springs (yellow) when you order it. There are three.
Great van for main trimming. I lead it back to the cockpit. You will find even
with the strong springs the boom will be some what springy, so you will
probably want to keep your topping lift, or put the main halyard on the boom
when you put the boat away for the day. It will support the boom when I drop
the main, but again a little spongy. I have a topping lift lead back to the
cockpit, and leave it a little slack when sailing, and tighten it up after the
main is down. I hopes this helps.

Gee, Chuck

I guess there are a few folks on the list that like Garhauer vangs. :). I
put one on Touche' in 1999. Still looks good and works great. Highly
recommend one.

I've installed a few Garhauer vangs on other boats and have always had good
experiences with their support.

I installed a Boomkicker on a J30 several months ago and have a positive
opinion of that product also.

If it helps your decision, I have sold several rope vangs on eBay. Price
ranges from about $45 to $90 depending on size and condition.

Re: Stus-List Boom vanging...

2016-01-28 Thread Patrick Davin via CnC-List
Good timing on this topic, I just finished installing my new Garhauer
RV-20-1SL vang. Thinking about writing a blog post on it (svviolethour.com)
since I've been so happy with it so far (though haven't yet used it
sailing! Just installed 3 days ago).

It's the best deal in boating I've found so far - less than $500 is a
really reasonable price compared to other boating items with comparable
quantities of stainless steel, turning blocks, line and custom SS mast +
boom fittings.

Took about an hour to make the mast/boom templates and 7 hours to install
(cut all these times in 1/2 or 1/4 if you're not a perfectionist like me,
and not learning all these skills from scratch). 1 hour of that was to
remove the existing boom vang U-bolt fitting which was in the boom (hard to
work it down to the end of the boom), and ~2 hours was for fixing the part
I messed up - my center punch hadn't arrived from Amazon yet so the drill
chattered a bit and a couple holes ended up 1/16" - 1/8" off - enough to
not allow tapped machine screws in. Had to dremel out the fitting holes a
little larger with the tungsten carbide cutter.

I have a Boomkicker, but if I were to do it again, I would install Garhauer
rigid vang. The cost is not that much different, but it seems to me that the
Garhauer vang is a bit more solid.

Btw. The Boomkicker is pretty strong. I would not seat on the boom, but you can
lean on it without a problem.

Regardless of what you choose, you will need a vang. And I would strongly
suggest to run the line to the cockpit – you will use it.

At Garhauer talk to Guido; he will help you figure out the details.

I find that with them, it is easier to talk on the phone than trying to have
the discussion via email. At least, make the initial contact by phone.

hydraulics, but wonder who can recommend which vang/size and other
considerations (vendor, etc) based on your purchase/use of them.

There is Forespar, Garhauer, Boomkicker, etc.  Some are less expensive but
appear the same.  Thoughts?

I have a used Garhauer rigid vang that I figure is too big (or borderline) for
my C 27-3. It’s an older RV20-1 that’s for 28-44ft boats. It came off a C
30-1.

Anyone out there with a boomkicker or perhaps in the opposite situation with a
rigid vang that might be interested in a trade?

I would second the Garhauer experience. They can recommend size and build
flange fit to your mast and great to work with. Try catching them at a boat
show or during a show for best price.

Contact Garhauer by telephone. If you email them, you will be instructed
to call them on the phone anyway. :-)

http://garhauermarine.com

They can ship you different rated springs to better match your boat.
It's not a major deal to do this. Every boat is different and sometimes
a brand new Garhauer vang will have springs that are either too strong
or too weak. There are a variety of springs to chose from. This is where
you find out about Garhauer's exceptional service.
