Just to clarify - I am referring to the combing box/cubbies on each side of the 
cockpit above the lazarettes.  The original (I believe) were all wood.

A coaming box is a storage box inserted into the coaming surrounding the 
cockpit.  They're good for storing winch handles and the like.

I like the idea of a fridge vent! I've been thinking of adding some coaming
boxes, but our watermaker takes up the space on the starboard side. I might
see about moving it down a little, as it would be nice to have a place to
toss jib sheets.

A good idea; My boat did not have a coaming box, so we added one; we even 
vented the refrigeration through it...works well; we went generic from
