Hi Ken,
The J-Prop looks interesting and MaxProp now makes more easily adjustable props 
too.
I've had a Max-Prop for the last fifteen years. I installed it to recommended 
pitch and made an adjustment the following year to reduce pitch and allow 
proper RPM. No adjustments since.

Is there any reason to change the pitch on a sailboat? Have you ever altered 
yours?

We are currently running the two blade plastic prop on our CnC 29 as the 
JProp is on the bench for disassembly and cleaning.  You must use the 
requisite grease in the JProp or it gets all gummed up and won't feather 
easily.  It also on occasion reverses settings and forward becomes 
reverse and visa versaI don't know why but our rigger fixes it.  It 
replaced the Martec which is supposed to be  welded and refaced on 
occasion, which no one informed us and as a result our welder suggested 
we retire it and use it for a trophy of some kind.  We bought the J Prop 
as it was the only device that fits the C&C 29MkI and performance in 
reverse was considerably improved, our prop is offset.  Ken, notes that 
is adjustable and we carefully monitored what other 29 owners were 
trying, those that had Atomic 4's and followed their lead, saving 
considerable time and effort.  We all ended up using the offset of 5 for

Gori even advertised that when folded the blades present less area to
tangle.  Of course if you are motoring then you will probably not survive
with ANY prop.

I have tangled with one line in my time and it was a trout line used for
crabbing.  The red floating gas can was the only indicator of anything in
the water.  I kinda assumed that whatever might be being marked would be
directly below much like a crab pot.  I gave it about half a boat length of
space.  Once I was close enough to realize that a waterman was using it for
a float I could then also see the trout line extending at a shallow
diagonal.  I immediately cut the engine and shifted to neutral but still
not sure if I had cleared the line with my keel.  I watched the can to make
a wake as we drifted past.  As the can had just cleared a line
perpendicular to my transom it began making a wake.  I deployed the swim
platform and got down low to the water to see what could be seen.  The line
was actually fouled on the little post in front of the rudder.  The
waterman had used a bosuns clip to attach the line to the can so a boat
hook and some gymnastics and I was able to unhook the clip, re-route the
line, and re-attach it to the can.  Unfortunately this was not before the
waterman saw from 1/4 mile away what had happened.  He proceeded over to us
and began raising all types of hell.  I apologized and even showed that I
had reset his line before dropping it in the water.

Long story short, the approach angle of the deep keel protected the prop
and shaft from catching on the line.

Hi Neil

Persistence has Flexofold 2 blade on Yanmar 3GM30F and it works very well.  
Have run up to 3100RPM but normally stay at 2800 RPM since WOT is 2800 which is 
the 80% number.  Is almost no difference in speed over 3000 RPM.  Works well, 
decent reverse and far better than the Martec it replaced.

Customer service for me was simple.  Sent an email (or contact on website – 
cannot recall), got a response with quote and suggestion the next day,.  When 
ordered it arrived in 3 days.  Installation no problem.

Not sure if centrifical force or not but always assumed it was.  No issues at 
all on opening fwd or reverse.

Bruce,

I have a 16" 3 blade max-prop tied to my Yanmar 3HM35F (~35HP max
output@3600rpm), C&C 37+.  I have no experience with anything else but can
say that the service, support, design and operation of this product and
company are very satisfying.  Mine is the original model which is extremely
challenging to adjust in the water but could technically be done.  I HAVE
disassembled, cleaned, and adjusted mine multiple times on dry land.  My
engine had slightly lost timing advance causing a reduction in power, over
the years I tweaked the prop to account for the reduction.  When I fixed
the issue with the engine I now found that I was under pitched and was able
to easily adjust back.  Adjustability is an awesome flexibility.  Reverse
seems just as powerful as forward and prop walk to port is apparent but not
problematic... In fact I have learned to use it for docking and prefer
docking on port

I believe that Dwight has recommended the AutoProp in the past.  It sounds
like maybe it auto pitches itself based on RPM/load?  I would definitely
consider an AutoProp or Ken Heaton's J-prop in the future if I was looking
for an alternativeof course I would throw an updated version of the
Max-prop into the considerations as well.

Thankfully, I have not gotten tangled in a crab pot line as of yet.  I was just 
thinking that if the blades are folded, there would be a greater probability of 
the line sliding off the prop shaft rather than getting caught around a blade 
like "might" happen with a J Prop.  That said, it would then probably get 
caught around the rudder, but it's a lot more robust.  Maybe I'm just

Note that the "J Prop" is pitch adjustable while installed on the boat so it

We put a flex-o-fold 2 blade on our 33-ll after repowering her better reverse, 
and power in forward. l seldom try WOT, as I have plenty of speed at 2700 rpm. 
9 or 10 years later no issues.

I believe I reported recently that I went from a Martec two blade to a Flex o 
Fold two blade.  My Westerbeke diesel engine likes to run at about 2000 RPM.  
The performance of the props is comparable, although the Flex o Fold seems to 
provide more power in reverse.  Overall, I am happy with the Flex o Fold for 
three reasons: 1) because it folds all blades at once (smoothly, I might add), 
I never have a blade hanging down and don’t need to worry about aligning the 
shaft for racing; 2) the new prop does not do the half-open crazy vibration 
thing that is common with old Martecs; and 3) it was relatively easy to install 
(meaning that I could do it).

I have a flex fold on my 40, they might have over propped me also . I can only 
go to 3000 rpm, but it is a two blade, no vibration. I'm  happy with it.
