Stus-List GelCoat Color Matching and Cracked Mast Step
Well, yesterday, the boat was hauled out for the winter... time to get busy before winter sets in for Upstate NY. We had a great summer of sailing on our new to us 1980 C which we named Indigo Out We Go. 1 - There are some chips in the gelcoat, especially around the perimeter of the transom. What is the best way to go about color matching my beautiful blue gelcoat? Is this a factory color that I can reference by name or number at a marine supply store and get tinted? (See Photos for nice blue color) 2 - I bought Indigo with a cracked mast step plate. We sailed all summer with it, even up to 25+ knot gusts. I see no evidence of movement. I called an aluminum welder and he told me it would be tough to adequately reconnect the plate without knowing the alloy and grinding down the plate so the keelbolt doesn't crack it again (not sure if that is the original cause). Should I be concerned with this crack? Where am I likely to find a replacement part? (See Photos) PHOTOS - https://photos.app.goo.gl/XNxxNMUeBmkdUkyHA Thanks for the information on various threads all summer, I have learned a lot! Marc Do what Dennis said get the AWL grip card and match the color. Awl grip has more than one red. Fireball is red and after wiping out a bell buoy in the fog (GPS can be very accurate) the person who did AWL grip got the wrong red and had to re-apply the red. Good suggestions all. I was able to get my hands on an AwlGrip card. It seems that I'm in the neighborhood of Insignia White, Fleet White or Off White. Kinda surprising as it appeared there was more of a gray tone. Re: Stus-List Gelcoat color
Dennis has given best advice...go to Fibreglast website, rent the color books, pick the closest or a little darker and let them tint for you... The sun and weather are different everywhere...hoe the finish has been cared fortoo many variables on a 30+ year old finish to just assume it will match. I have used this service and it is only way I think to get close. Re: Stus-List Gelcoat color
Go here: https://www.fibreglast.com/category/colorgelcoat Rent their two gelcoat tint books. $5 each for 30 days. Compare the samples against your boat in several spots and several light conditions. If you are undecided or between samples, err to the dark side. It will fade over time. Also, if it is lighter, it will look like a gelcoat repair. If it is darker, it will look like a dirty spot. Order the closest match from Fibre Glast. For reference, sample F155 matches my old 35-1 fairly well. Dennis C. Stus-List Gelcoat color
Looking for input on original gelcoat color name/number for our venerable C My 41 is what I thought was white (but as my wife can attest, my color vision leave much to be desired) however, as I put a spot of base white on a repair, it is way off. Does anyone know what color I'm trying to match? I get the 35 years of elements taking their toll, but the gelcoat is pretty thick on these boats, and I may sand out some of the patina which will put me closer to the original color. Thanks in advance, Chuck *Chuck Borge* *Tenacious C* *Somerset, MA* ___ Thanks everyone for supporting this list with your contributions. Each and every one is greatly appreciated.
