Went out to the boat yesterday and used all the dock lines I own to add
extra spring lines on both sides (including across the empty slip next to
me) and took the sails off and stowed them below. Probably was overkill as
we now are not expecting to see anything over 45 kts or as the center of
the storm is well west. However, the seaport marina in Lynn is exposed to
the south which is the primary wind direction here so I was concerned about
extra windage. Biggest risk is that the marina will fall apart
unfortunately (it isn't in good shape) or something else will come loose
and hit the boat. Just have to hope for the best. Here at home in Malden,
it is windy and occasional heavy rain but nothing too extreme so far.

I have been watching that camera, but unfortunately it is a mile further up the
harbor and sheltered to some extent by the big State Pier and peninsula
sticking out. I am much closer to the harbor mouth and much more exposed. But
gusts have not exceeded 40 at New London Ledge Light lighthouse which is just
outside the harbor, and that should not be a problem unless it increases a lot.

I'm 2.5 hours from my boat but the storm followed the predictions here in New
Jersey and our power blinked three times but stayed on. The rain was super
heavy and wind was at least 60mph at times. Two small Oak trees broke about
twenty feet up and branches fell onto the neighbors fence. Debris is
everywhere but the house faired ok. I made chilli on the gas range for lunch,
and the wind has returned to normal and now we have full sun and the air smells
great outside as we pick up debris on the street and the front lawn. I'll have
to drive to the boat to check if the trees next to my boat stayed up.

On the other side of the Bay from Reedville (and just South of Joe), St.
Michaels fared rather well. The eye went right over us and eight inches of rain
flooded the boat yard and low lying places, and the wind blew big time.
Branches down, etc. But it came near low tide which helped a bunch. Moved
Penniless over to the sheltered side of the boat yard yesterday, everything
held and now I can move her back. We lucked out.

lines she is riding just fine, bu the aft cockpit scuppers are clogged
with leaves so I had to do MORE bailing :(

Right now I am trapped at home, the water is too deep to drive anymore.
I have the dinghy home and if the wind dies a bit we are going to cruise
it around the neighborhood.

Just moved out to a heavier mooring but still only 500lb. It didn't have a
bridle like I normally have, only a single but plenty of chafe guard.
Lashed it down tight. Not excited for today at all.

By the time I got to the boat the forecast got much worse for here. Now
looking at gusts over 50 and one station said up to 70.

Genoa and bimini are off and I added some extra lines. That should do
until tomorrow.

Re: Stus-List Isaias

2020-08-03 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
Water Phantom is at anchor (actually 2!) out in the creek near her slip at
Blackbeard Sailing Club near New Bern, NC.
Our club requires ‘big’ boats to vacate our slips when a hurricane warning is
issued locally. Usually she is on the hard for bottom work during hurricane
season but not this year. The club provides water taxis to/from the anchorage
before and after the storm but for now, she is on her own facing the storm.
Fortunately Isaias, like most hurricanes, will pass quickly and at barely
hurricane strength, unlike Florence which blew from the East/southeast for
days. Her strong winds piled up the Pamlico Sound water into the upper Neuse
virtually destroying her dock as well as the town of New Bern among others.
Between reducing her windage and the double anchors, she at the mercy of the
storm and LUCK—I am pretty confident that her anchors will hold. She needs LUCK
to avoid being hit by boats whose anchor(s) may not hold and crash into her.
Of course, there is always my insurance!

How is everyone set for Isaias? Forecast here is for about 25-30 from the east,

In Miami last Friday I was one of the few at my marina who fully prepped --
it was just too unsure for me not to. First drill of the season. Hope all
threats are false dangers. Good luck to anyone in its (and any future
storms) paths.
