Re: Stus-List Navtec Backstay Adjuster
I have used an industrial hydraulic shop to replace the seals on Child's Play's Navtec hydraulic backstay, Navtec boom vang as well as the Navtec control panel. The replacement seals used for the hydraulic fluid seem fine. All are functioning fine after between 6 and 2 years since the work was done. The seal on the boom vang that seals the high pressure nitrogen (to hold the boom up) started to fail after 2 years. (as the hydraulic pressure was released and the boom rose the nitrogen would leak and made a loud gurgling noise in the fluid reservoir). I have had the boom vang serviced at Southshore Yachts (navtecservice shop) this past winter and hope to have better result this time around Jon C&C 44 Childs Play Kingston . ___ This list is supported by the generous donations of our members. Find a truck repair hydraulic shop. "Yacht Shoppes" charge 5x and in some cases do crappy work to boot. I spent $1000 on a $100 figuring that out. Re: Stus-List Navtec Backstay Adjuster
Steve I took mine apart as best I could to see if I could find wear and tear. The one thing I noticed was that the hydraulic fluid was very very low. I emptied what I could. I have the instruction for bleeding the system and did this and then refilled according to the instructions. I put some tension on it left for a few days then topped up again with fluid. I took it to the workshop at the yacht club where we sail and we think we got about 2,500 pounds of pressure on the system and the piston did not move at all over 48 hours. Apparently the hydraulic fluid heats in the black casing and vaporizes which can leak around the seals. You may want to try this first.
