Agreed — I used a very sharp chisel to carefully get all of the old Plexus off,
then sanded and filled with 3M Marine Filler and sanded some more.

I too would suggest removing all of the original Plexus. That’s what I did
prior to painting the decks. It cannot be described as either easy or fun but
given the time and money you may be spending, it would be best to get it right

I used to be a marine repair "pro". Couple years ago I did a port
replacement on a boat that had ports mounted similarly to C's. The first
thing I did was to remove ALL the old sealant and properly prep the
adhering surface. IMHO, and from years of marine repair, proper
preparation is 80-90% of a quality job.

I considered the same thing - if the plexus is well adhered then
why not just leave it there?
But some of the plexus was not well adhered - some came off
fairly easily with just hand pressure on a chisel.  I decided I
didn't want to finish the job to discover that the foundation
attachment was weak in spots and in need of replacement.
That said I couldn't "pull" my plexus off -- it was rock hard and
  had to be chipped away

Stus-List Plexus Removal During Fixed Port Replacement

2017-05-16 Thread robert via CnC-List

Bruce:

I replaced my ports approx. 7 years ago.the old ones were help in
place by Plexus.I used a Dremmel with a fine bit to remove the
Plexus.it had to be removed otherwise the new ports would not 'seat
properly' and flush with the side cabin top(s). I did not want the new
ports protruding out beyond the side of the cabin.

If a pro is doing it, I'd have the pro do it so it will looklike a pro
did the job.
